My point was that Aussies, just like everyone else, like to hang out with their own kind when they're in another country.

My dad has always made the point an Aussie who lives in Italy for 20 years considers himself Aussie not Italian yet an Italian who has lived in Australia for the same amount of time is shouted down for daring to say he's Italian and not Australian.

Aussies like to preach to everyone else about how if you come to Australia you have to assimilate yet those same people would probably do everything they can to avoid assimilating overseas.

A very simple and solid point. Hadn't looked at it like that before.

Depends where you are. I haven't been to SE Asia, but I've met some awesome Australians OS. The well travelled ones are good value. The 'holidayers' are usually the dicks.

yep agree all and well of Aussies abroad - some are woeful and some are ok - many nationalities have this issue at hand.

The fact of the matter is regardless of behaviour elsewhere is that we don't have aussie "youth" being a issue at hand or terrorist threat as what has been going on here of late, sure they behave as you say Munrub and its not good but as said we don't have these people over there going into Police stations with knives or being a "suspect" so to speak.
Sure I understand the angst towards a % of aussie behaviour here towards migrants, I have had to live through that myself in my youth - but we Italians/greeks/crows etcetc didn't get caught up in social media (wasn't around ofcourse) and start to follow a cult/group or whatever you can call these misguided idiots hiding behind a religion.

I hope the gov and authorities Islamic incl learn very fast together how to work together and spread a good partnership for us all - for lets face it a terrible scenario is going happen sooner or later here and it just could have one of our loved ones at the wrong place at the wrong time.

When people ask me where I'm from, I tend to say that I'm from Melbourne rather than Australia.

Probably the worst experience I've had with westerners is in SE Asia, but have also had shitty experiences with them in Europe.

Travelling Americans are actually a funny phenomenon. All the Americans I have met in my travels except for a bunch of guys in Amsterdam have been stellar. Awesome to have a drink and yarn with, a good respect and thirst for experiencing culture etc.

ROFL... Ok, so let me get this straight - a 23 year married pizza guy is sending $12,000 to a random guy from the US. All without raising suspicion, easily from his wife lol! Unless she is an accomplice.

FTW~!

The only way he'd have that sort of money to throw around without his missus knowing is through criminal activity.

Either their are holes in this story or the AFP are going to open a whole can of worms with the FBI information in relation to how a pizza guy sends bucket loads of cash to random people to help fund terrorism. It has to be a pretty significant network, one would think.

My bet is pizza guy is just the fall guy if things went wrong.

From my experience as an expat Aussie it's hard to make comparisons with immigrants in Australia. Everywhere you go your referee to as "waiguoren" (foreigner) weather it's "the foreigners food is ready" or "I don't want to sit next to the foreigner" on the train. However my wife's family and people I am close to accept me as one of their own. So there is a good and bad side to it.

Australia is so different because of the large numbers of immigrants. You can look at the bad side and say people are forced to adapt or fuck off or you can look at the good side where to preserve our identity we are willing to accept any race or religion as an Aussie if they are willing to be one of us.

I consider myself an Aussie Taiwanese, I love the Taiwanese as a people but sometimes to preserves sanity I like to hang out with other expats and have a few beers and talk shit in English. Weather they be Aussie, Brazillian, Mongolian or whatever.

As Nicholas Brody's character who do on that show Homeland

He would say "Salaam Aleikuum" to a muslim working in a generic muslim's position - embroidery, carpet shop, 7-11

And Salaam Aleikuum doesn't mean "Hello", it means: "wheres the device for me to strap onto myself to carry out this suicide mission?"

No idea it its legit, probably not.

But that is the kind of attitude I like to see. Don't even have to denounce IS or protest against them to prove you want to integrate (like all the Islamic apologists always point out and whinge about). If it is a sincere letter to the editor, and I'm not being naive in thinking it might be, then good on the lad.

Same experience here. The only glut of Aussie fucksticks I saw was in Bangkok. The backpacker/traveler types I met elsewhere were generally lovely people.

I've been in Europe and UK the last few months and the only place I went were I felt being Aussie wan't a good thing was London.

The only Aussies I saw in Thailand were seedy 45+ year olds looking for wives and/or ladyboys to have some fun with. Met a bloke in Canada who was a miner who was possibly the loudest and most ignorant person in the world. Just embarrassing some of the shit people actually believe and tell other people.
