The QCS in a nutshell was: All school students in year 12 would sit 4 tests. A genenral knowledge, english, maths and science test. After the test, all the marks are recorded and then taking the total of all the people in your school, your school is awarded a grade. That grade determines how many OPs your school can get. In other words, your school does crap, you get low OPs, regardless of how well you have done in your individual tests.

Sounds similar to ours: we have three standardising tests - one multiple choice, one short answer and an essay. Your marks are culminated and compared against your schoolmates, which are then compared against schools across the ACT. This then affects how your marks are scaled from your "raw", ie class, marks across year 11 + 12.

NSW's is shit confusing. In a nut shell, you do your trial, set by the school, then you get a rank for each subject. Now when the actual HSC, a NSW Board of Education state wide test, is sat, and you get a decent result, you will get the highest result from the HSC test if you came first in the trial, second highest if you came second in the trial, and so on.

All Year 12's now know that that the trial is more important than the actual test.

Then there is scaling, that sh*t is confusing...

:-s
I presumed it hasn't changed much (if at all, other than the UAI becoming the ATAR) since 2005 but the way I've always seen it IIRC is that the "trial HSC" (internal/finals exam) is only important results-wise for your school report card and if you aren't going on to university; the whole point of it being a "trial" was just to go through the formalities of the exam room. Otherwise, your HSC result which is then indexed/ranked/scaled is way more important if you want to go to university. I can't remember exactly, maybe things have changed?

I've never been told the exact way it works, but when explained simply, that is pretty much what I've gotten. May be a tiny misinterpreted by me, but I think thats the jist of it.

the ACT has 'continuous assesment' so we dont have any end of semester exams, just a steady trickle of assignments and tests.

Na hasn't changed basically at all from what you remember. Only things that have changed that I can remember are it going from UAI to an ATAR now, and you can no longer get 100

Going off what I remember from '06, the hsc was 50% internal (school mark) and 50% from the hsc exams
Normally the internal mark has the trials worth around 50%. With the other school assessments filling the rest
The internal mark is scaled based on how the rest of the school does in the subject in the HSC exams (so the school internal scores are scaled to resemble the hsc exam marks) so placing well in the trials is important for HALF of the hsc mark
And then each total subject mark is scaled based on how "good" the subject is, when calculating the UAI or ATAR as it is now. I dont recall how they rate the subjects, but there are certain ones that score well, like the extension subjects

Yeah I don't know if it's exactly the same but when it was the UAI it used to be made up of your raw HSC mark and the moderated assessment marks of the last term of Yr 11 and the 3 terms of Yr 12.

The setting of the School Certificate Examinations is completely pointless. For those who don't what it is, it is a test given to all Year 10 students around NSW. It was originally brought in for the students who would drop out at Year 10, and showed that they had finished a suffcient enough hours of schooling.

They've recently stopped kids dropping out at Year 10, yet this year, we are still going to do this silly, redundant test. It's just plain stupidity, and is starting to bug me. Also, since it is state wide, they need to set the benchmark at the level of every school can achieve a decent result. So my school, one of the top 10 preforming schools in the state, and obviously selective, needs to sit a test that asks what is 4+4.

Purely redundant, and just plain idiotic now. Either get rid of the School Cert. or lower the drop out year so this test doesn't become a waste of time and paper.

NSW education system = fucked. The way we did it in Canberra (similar to how Qld do it, I believe) is no test for yr 10 and no major exam in yr 12. Basically, your marks from yrs 11 + 12 are equally weighted, and your highest 3.5 subjects (ie: 3 majors and a minor) are what make up your ATAR (along with how you rank in the ACT).

I liked the school certificate. It was the only test I have ever really got marks that I am capable of because my laziness and lack of study couldn't really effect my marks.

The way they calculated the UAI through the HSC was stupid though. I got a UAI of around 80, while one of my friends got 67-68. We did exactly the same subjects except I did chemistry, extension 1 & 2 maths and only did extension 1 and Computer something or rather. We got the pretty much same marks for all the non-math subjects. My friend ended up beating me in extension 1 and got around 80% in the 2 unit course. I got around 45% in extension 2 but because I did extension 2, I got 100% in 2 unit even though in the school courses my friend ended up just beating me in the marks collected by the school.

Yeah. I was horrified when they told me a few weeks before trials. I did fine in the actual HSC - high 70's, low 80's for everything, except Biology which I just scraped a pass in. However my ATAR was in the low 50's. I was devo.
