Spade, whilst the reference listed it as being a post-civil war insult regarding Afro-Americans, has been a common racial slur around the English speaking world throughout my lifetime... Perhaps not in Australia due to the lack of Africans in the country (until recent times).

People make the point because Joffa is making the place a less enjoyable and inclusive place with his bizarre moderation practices, which will naturally have the effect of people dropping off anyway.

It's a far more common phrase simply because its usually used in a non-racial context, unlike literally calling somebody a 'spade' - hence the poster needing to trojan horse the vicious phrase with the innocent one. This is of course should be beside the point as you wanted to excuse the derogatory term as not derogatory at all because

a) "it was a civil war era insult" and
b) "for an ethnic group that nobody in Australian football has any connection to"

Which suggests to me that you don't really believe that it was just a case of a common phrase in the first place but that you probably just wish there was at the least a subtle way to be publicly bigoted or racist and not be vilified for it. Also your insatiable need to relate points of contemporary discussion in this place to some weird gender analogy makes my fucking skin crawl.
