So, Sony have decided not to show the movie "The Interview" in cinemas because of a threat of a terrorist attack from Sony Hackers.

Anyone else find this disturbing.

FFS. Stop being precious.

I'm actually a little sceptical that its all a publicity stunt, and they will decide to show the movie after all. To a much bigger audience had they not generated so much "interest"

I don't think it's a stunt. Too much damage has been done by the hacking.

I think it's poor form to show people that having a tantrum will ultimately give them what they want.

I just find it unusual that a Hollywood studio has decided to all of a sudden be "pro-censorship." I would've assumed they would have loved the publicity the movie is getting and would want to cash in on that. Seems strange to me.

What this shows is that lots of people have sent lots of emails that they don't want to be made public - because the ongoing threat is that those actually showing the movies will be targeted next. It's the multiplexes that have pulled the pin rather than the studio itself.

I've a feeling that there are a ton of nervous multiplex execs who don't want their racism, homophobia, sexism, and comments on the films they show, their pricing policy, their attitude toward the cinema goers, etc., to be leaked.

My thoughts exact. Still an act of appeasement though.

It's part of a larger hack of Sony Pictures mainframes, they've already released a lot of things that go way beyond the realms of a publicity stunt, including execs calling Angelina Jolie a talentless cunt in emails and thousands of employee records (social security and medical records). There's a class action lawsuit happening from Sony employees against Sony as well as Sony legally threatening any media outlets that are publicising the content of the leaks.

Not a publicity stunt, but I don't think that I would be sure enough to lay it at the feet of North Korea.

I believe they've also pointed fingers at China and Iran. I wouldn't put weight in any of it. Hackers are savvy enough to spoof the origins of attacks.

Could be NK, could be someone like GNA or TLS trolling they often do.

There's a South Korean group that fly DVDs over the demilitarised zone with little hot air balloons, they have already committed to sending as many The Interview DVDs as possible.

do you think it could be due to the risk of litigation??? you know someone goes to watch the movie, some nut job runs amok and the family sue Sony because they were aware of the risk and didn't ensure due diligence??

I usually love everything that Seth Rogan and James Franco do, but after watching the trailer for this however long ago I have slim-to-no interest in going to see it, unless I hear rave reviews from heaps of people about it (same scenario for me with Guardians of the Galaxy - the trailer put me off, but the reviews made me see it and I was happy I did).

There was plenty of interest in the movie, and pulling it from cinemas after all the marketing money had been spent can only be counter-active to bringing in an audience. Had they bravely made a stand against the hackers and shown it anyway, with the media applauding them and proclaiming that it was our duty as free citizens to support the film against oppressive censorship from the Commies - THEN I would have suspected it was a publicity stunt.

I imagine if it was the North Koreans, they must have hired external talent from abroad to do it, as only a few hundred people in the country are allowed internet access, so I doubt there'd be anyone able to pull it off.

Exactly. I wasn't thinking this too. They know bugger all about the Internet. Their closest allies would be China, so that's my bet.

I was really looking forward to this, I've been following on line and James Franco's character is hilarious. there's heaps of awesome innuendo and standard Rogen/Franco banter. realy cool memes out there too.

I hope it gets released or at the least released virally because I wanted to see it before al of this now it is a bucket list item.

lol at North Korea Internet crashing!
