I'm writing tactical previews on each of the 16 teams at the Asian Cup. It's been fascinating looking at all the different styles, especially with so many nations making changes in coach literally months out from the tournament!

Group A:
Australia
South Korea
Kuwait
Oman

I'll add links to the other groups in here as they are published over the coming days.

Nice write ups. Think people need to better understand these teams. Look forward to the rest =d>

Many of these Countries have fired managers for this specific competition

Great stuff, Aussie Scout.=d>

Particularly with teams other than Australia whose playing patterns we are are less familiar with. This is an excellent orientation for football followers prior to the Asian Cup.

Kuwait is an interesting team.

I lived there in 2002/3. The local league was an atrocious standard, as Aussie Scout suggests. It is astonishing to see the national team play as well as they have.

North Korea. After reading about them both I won't confuse North Korea with South Korea again. lol

I think you've named what, 2 players in the North Korea formation, the rest unknowns. Now that is some great tactics when no country knows whose even on your team, look and learn Ange.

China have had some good results lately ? Even beat Paraguay I think? a bit unpredictable but mostly a good team

Thanks for all the kind words so far - glad people are enjoying them.

Group C:
Iran - defensively excellent side, but poor preparation
UAE - on the up with a stable side and brilliant playmaker
Qatar - a rising force of Asian football
Bahrain - weaker than they were 12 months ago

This is a very even group, probably the most even of the tournament. Iran v Bahrain will probably be the most boring match of the tournament, but watching the UAE and Qatar - both who will probably look to control possession - will make up for it.

The main story, here, though, was all about Australia’s domination. They were up 3-0 by half-time, and could’ve easily have scored more than 4. They dominated the ball (completing 700 passes, easily more than any other side at this Asian Cup), constantly drew Oman’s defenders out of positions and consistently created chances.

Performance-wise, this was acclaimed as the best performance under Postecoglou. It was certainly an impressive marker for the rest of the tournament.

Tactically, why were Australia so dominant?
