Would still be a pretty big upset if they didn't. South Hobart are arguably the strongest team in Tasmania. Could be said they're a shoe in to be the first team to record 3 qualifications.

The Wagga vs Gladesville Ryde game is an interesting kickoff time. 4pm on Wednesday. I wonder how many players won't be able to get the day off work, especially coming down from Sydney.

Wagga probably trying to screw over Gladesville. I don't know how that was approved.

Wagga would be most likely in the same boat though. More likely to get away with getting off work, but usually mid week fixtures around there kick off at 7pm from memory.

I don't think Wagga have played away from home this season. That gives them a direct advantage. Would love if they beat a NPL club and qualified because of that.

They weren't convincing. Olympia gave them a run for their money. Adding to this, South opponents are coming off a 10 nil shelacking.

Anyones game I suppose. If I had money to bet I would put it on South though.

Sydney (CBD) to Wagga is a good 460km trip each way. A good run will take you at least 4 and a half hours to get there. Most lower league teams would struggle to get a whole team down there. NPL1 might get it, given they're semi-professional, but you can't expect a NPL3 or lower, let alone a District Association Rep team to do it. It'd mean taking 2 days off work for each player.

Wait, it's top 7 of NSW that go through, yeah? Are there more teams go enter, or is it a stage now where the winners of these games qualify?? I can't be bothered going back to check the draw, it took me ages to type this with a cast haha

I recall Wagga played Ararat at home a few ago routed them 3nil, not that I rate them but the leg is all in Waggas favour and I agree I don't think they have played away at all.
This is stacked for them the way I see it - how or if Magic accepted this is baffling, I'll try to find out some goss at training tonight.

I'm guessing they didnt want to pay accommodation costs. 7.30 kick off would mean leaving Wagga at 10, and that's assuming the match doesnt go into ET/penalties.

4pm makes a lot of sense. Drive down at 9am, have a couple of hours to prepare and warm up and you're back in Sydney by midnight.

7pm means taking 2 days off work rather than one and having to cough up for accommodation costs for close to 20 people. How many semi-pro clubs can afford to do that?

It does sound ridiculous. I am quite sure hat the Rhinos (nearby Griffith's youth NPL side), at least when initially set up, had a bias in their schedule where 2 thirds of their games were home. I'm not sure if WCW has the same set up.

The game is being played on Wednesday because Gladesville have accepted it. This is the 5th cup game in the past 2 years that Wagga had been drawn at home (out of 7, they played in Sydney the 1st round each year). Each time they have requested to play mid-week (like every other club in FNSW has the right to) and it has been rejected by the opposing club or FNSW (don't know who). This has forced Wagga to play their cup games on the same weekend as regular league games, so backing up Saturday/Sunday, or Saturday/Monday when then have fallen on long weekends. I'm assuming Gladesville have accepted the Wednesday so they don't have to play 2 games in 2 days, and they might think they can beat a lower division team with a weakened squad anyway.
The 4pm kick-off is a compromise so that Gladesville can get back to Sydney before midnight after the game. The Gladesville players would have missed a day of work anyway, even at a normal kick-off time.
Obviously Wagga would have preferred 7pm, meaning that all their own players would have been available and not had to take time off work/uni/school. Not all the players are from Wagga and have up to a 2 hour drive just to get to Wagga. This is the biggest game ever for Wagga City and also the highest ranked opposition they have ever played against. A 7pm kick-off would have allowed them to get in a much bigger crowd and pulled in a bit of extra cash, through the gate and food sales. It’s essentially the biggest game in Wagga since Marconi played a pre-season friendly there in the late 90’s/ early 00’s.

It will be interesting to see what happens when it’s Wagga forced to play in Sydney mid-week next year or next round if Wagga City somehow manage to win this Round. Would an NPL club accept to play 2 games in a weekend if Wagga City refuse to come up mid-week. Wagga know that they are only in the State League because of the good will of Sydney clubs, so they do whatever they can to accommodate visiting teams requests. This unusual kick-off is by no means Wagga trying to gain some kind of advantage.

They do currently have the same bias in the league. I think 4 clubs go to Wagga twice in the season.

Fair enough, ofcourse there has to be a compramise due to the geography.
I'm glad my sons club accepted the best case scenario for themselves due to work commitments but it still is a tall order besides the difference in leagues.
I'm glad for Wagga Football pursuing local exposure for the game and themselves I'm all for that just hope Magic do the business :) 2day turnaround and a 4 1/2hr drive - play - drive back to Sydney, long way if a loss :(

I don't know how willingly Gladesville accepted, they may have been informed by FNSW accept or forfeit.

I don't drive, or have a car so getting there would be a mission. Even if I grabbed a lift from the nearest station, (Richmond?) fuck getting the train out there. I did a year of Uni at UWS Nirimba in Quakers Hill, and that was a a good 2-2.5 hour commute each way every day! So leaving the ground at 10pm, and getting home at a reasonable hour...yeah, fuck that. :lol:
