Cmon Murray United tonight \:d/ playing at the Lavington Sports Venue where Kenny Lowe did his excited jittery celebration v Heart. Also the location where Shane Smeltz was snapped with the Glory team doing a maccas run after the game

Also i've noticed North Geelong have still got a home tie for next Wednesday. Initially i heard they couldnt host night matches.

BENTLEIGH Greens proved too good on Wednesday night, but Murray United showed they were more than capable of performing on the big stage after a dismal fortnight in the NPL.

The home side were bundled out of the FFA Cup in the sixth round 3-0.

It was always going to be a David vs Goliath battle for United, and 10 minutes in it was clear that Bentleigh Greens had come to play, converting from a classy cross to take a 1-0 lead.

But nothing came easy from that point on, with Murray United gamely fending off a number of chances to keep themselves in the match.

As the first half wore on United were able to work the ball forward, but chances were few and far between.

As half-time approached United were beginning to look more and more comfortable, but a penalty and conversion from Bentleigh’s Matt Thurtell in the dying seconds stung heading into the break.

Heads didn’t drop though and the intent remained in the second half, but the Bentleigh defence proved too good, fending off a number of forays forward.

A second goal against the run of play from Thurtell sealed the deal for the visitors.

But there was plenty to take from the game for Murray United, with coach James Coutts pleased with the improved workrate and endeavour of his side.

“We were coming up against the best side outside of the A-League, so we knew that the determination and desire we expect had to be there,” he said.

“And it really was, we’re very proud of them.

“We’re a little bit disappointed with our quality on the ball in the final third, but that’s something we can work on for this weekend.”

Young guns Lewis Greenwood and Darcy Pawlik both impressed, as did Melkie Woldemichael.

“I said to the boys before the game, watch this team,” Coutts said.

They’re the best team outside the A-League for a reason.

“It’s great to have that kind of experience, it really helps you as a player.

“Just the way they move the ball is something I want our team to learn.

“They know their next pass, they work hard on their shape, they trust and believe in what they’re doing.

“It’ll take us a while to get there, but it’s something I think we’re certainly capable of in time.”

FFA Cup: Eagles on guard for Urunga in knockout rematch Craig Kerry
May 25, 2016, 6 p.m.

EDGEWORTH know better than to take Urunga lightly after drawing the North Coast Premier League side in the FFA Cup on Wednesday.

The Eagles will play Urunga on June 18 at Lake Macquarie Regional Football Facility in the final-eight Northern NSW division of the nationwide knockout. Fellow NPL club Lambton Jaffas drew First Division side Belmont Swansea and NPL leaders Hamilton will play Armidale’s Norths United. First Division clubs Thornton and Singleton meet in the other match. The winners play the next day for two places on offer in the FFA Cup round of 32.

Urunga and Edgeworth met in the 2013 State League final, which the North Coast team won on penalties. Edgeworth fielded a young line-up, including Keanu Moore, who is now a key player.

“I don’t think we took it too seriously,” Edgeworth coach Damian Zane said of the game he missed as a player. "We were fighting to make the semis in first grade so we treated it as a weekend off.”

Zane was wary of Urunga. "We beat Coffs City last year but they were a decent standard, so I imagine Urunga will be similar,” he said. “They won’t be a walkover.”

Brisbane Premier League side one win away from potential clash with an A-League club in the FFA Cup

Michael CormackAlbert & Logan News

Rochedale Rovers players Phil Davies, Paul Mooney and Daryll Grant are ready for the clash with Redlands. Picture: JOHN GASS
ROCHEDALE Rovers will draw on their experience in cup competitions when they take on Redlands next week for a spot in the FFA Cup.

A win over NPL Queensland side Redlands would qualify the club for the competition proper for the first time and possibly pit them against an A-League or former NSL club.

Many clubs lack experience in the cup format due to the lack of a national cup competition between 1997 and 2014 but Brisbane Premier League side Rovers boast Phil Davies and Paul Mooney with experience in England’s FA Cup, while Luke Howell was part of Olympic FC’s run to the Round of 16 two years ago and the club’s technical director Scott MacNicol played in the Scottish Cup during his playing days.

“I think it’s good because everyone realises how big (the FFA Cup) is,” MacNicol said when asked how the team’s experience in cup competitions would help them.

“Everyone knows that a cup competition is a one-off game and you’ve got to turn up and play well.

“It’s not like a league game where you move on to the next week if you don’t get the result. If you don’t win in the cup, you’ve got to wait a whole year again.”

Rochedale beat another NPL side in Moreton Bay United 2-1 last Tuesday night to set up the clash with Redlands and MacNicol said there was a good vibe around the club after the win.

“Everyone was buzzing — there was a good crowd and a good atmosphere after the win,” he said.

“It would be massive (for the club to qualify).

“We would love to get through and play an old NSL team or even an A-League club.

“We’re not looking beyond Redlands at the moment though. They’re a good team and it’s going to take a good collective effort for us to beat them.

“I don’t think there is much difference between the NPL and BPL. We beat Moreton Bay and I thought we were the better team on the night but if we played them again they could beat us so it comes down to playing well on the day of the game.”

Comets win 1-0. One of the shittest games I've ever watched.

For the first time, but certainly not the last, I began to believe that Arsenals moods and fortunes somehow reflected my own. - Hornby
