Quote:Saturday night FFA Cup decider in the Top End
The Northern Territory FFA Cup Final will take place at the Darwin Football Stadium on Saturday night.
FFA Cup football will be the talk of the town in the Top End when the Northern Territory’s entrant for this year’s Westfield FFA Cup Round of 32 will be decided on Saturday night. Darwin's Shamrock Rovers will meet Alice Springs outfit Scorpions in a winner-takes-all clash at the Darwin Football Stadium. The winner progresses into the draw for the Round of 32 and a possible match-up against a Hyundai A-League club. If the semi-finals for both clubs is anything to go by, it will be a dramatic decider. Rovers survived 120 minutes and a marathon penalty shootout to get past Darwin Olympic in the last round.
In their first season in the Norzone top flight, Rovers edged Olympic 7-6 on penalties. Scorpions reached this stage with a 1-0 win over Celtic FC earlier this month thanks to Robert Davies’ goal 15 minutes from time in the Alice Springs decider. Both NT clubs are now just 90 minutes away from joining the 32 clubs who've progressed through the preliminary rounds. It promises to be an absolute ripper on what will be a memorable night for football in the Top End.

Quote:FFA Cup 2016: Edgeworth Eagles primed for another shot at A-League opposition Michael Parris June 17, 2016, 3 p.m.
EDGEWORTH coach Damian Zane regards the FFA Cup as the pinnacle of the club’s season and believes he has the team to go even further than last year’s round-of-32 showing.
The Eagles face Urunga in the last of four Northern NSW cup quarter-finals at Speers Point on Saturday. The four winners progress to two play-offs on Sunday, and the two sides left standing enter the national draw with the nine A-League clubs and 21 other regional qualifiers.
Edgeworth led Melbourne City through a Bren Hammel penalty in the round of 32 last year at Magic Park before Aaron Mooy scored in the 35th and 94th minutes to grab a 2-1 win. The game garnered nation-wide attention for Zane’s team, who went on to win the Northern NSW NPL title.
This year he believes the addition of former A-League striker Daniel McBreen and Japanese winger Keigo Moriyasu will make his team even more dangerous if they run across A-League opposition.
“I just think we’re built this year to have a good crack at someone,” he said. “I think we were good last year, but we’re better at that level this year. We have a guy up there now who can hold the ball up for us, because you’re undoubtedly under pressure, and we’ve got guys who can score goals, so fingers crossed we can get that far.”
But first they must negotiate two games in 18 hours on the synthetic fields at Speers Point. Zane said juggling game time for players across the two days was a challenge for all NPL coaches, but he will use McBreen to capacity on Saturday as the former Mariners star will be at a coaching licence course in Sydney on Sunday.
Edgeworth goalkeeper Jim Fogarty and defender Pat Wheeler are former Urunga players. Wheeler has gone overseas for three weeks, but the Eagles have skipper Josh Evans back after work commitments with the RAAF.
Zane said the synthetic fields would favour his side’s quick passing game – the Eagles trained on the adjacent five-a-side courts this week – but he cautioned that forecast rain could make conditions difficult.
“It’ll be a big leveller. I watched our youth teams play there this year when it was raining and the boys couldn’t control the ball. It was just coming on that quick. If it rains, you could see an upset or two. But I think it works in our favour.”
Zane hoped the Eagles would progress to a televised round-of-32 game to give some of his young stars, including Moriyasu and Keanu Moore, wider exposure.
“For me, this is our number one goal for the season, above the premiership and everything,” he said.
Hamilton Olympic coach Michael Bolch will not have Pat Brown on Saturday against Armidale club Norths United after the winger was sent off in a midweek under-22s game and will lose Leo Bertos on Sunday to the same coaching course McBreen is attending.
FFA Cup: Lambton Jaffas v Belmont-Swansea (10am); Singleton v Thornton (noon); Olympic v Norths United (2pm); Edgeworth v Urunga (4pm). Final-four games kick off 10am and noon on Sunday. http://www.theherald.com.au/story/3974310/edgeworth-primed-for-next-shot-at-big-time/
