So far thinking Section 8, but open to any suggestions! Depends on whether you're looking to hire it or just take a bunch of mates, how much you're willing to pay for drinks and what kind of drinks you're after.

Just raid the latest bar Afro's working at and hassle him for free drinks.. I know that's what I should have done for my 18th.

kc - agree with whoever said group work will help you make friends. most of my study buddies that i didn't know pre-uni were from group work.
if you want to make friends, just go up to the people you want to befriend & ask if they'd be keen on doing study/homework/etc together either inside or outside the uni, and organise a catchup. you've just started uni, from my skimming of your posts, so you're probably not into the full swing of assessments & deadlines, but once they start coming up you'll notice people around you working on the same stuff as you, literally just pull up a chair next to them & get them to help you out/you help them. people that are actually worth befriending will help you out, and spend the time with you. people who aren't worth it, won't. make sure after you've done a study sesh you offer the olive branch of "hey, i'm thirsty, keen for a beer at the bar?" and finish on a social note. also try & see if they'd be keen to study the next time you're at uni too, and the more exposure you'll get, the better friends you'll become.

It also depends what night you're looking to go out, but bars I'd recommend in the city area: Marrakech - they do some pretty schmick cocktails and crazy shots. Beer Deluxe - If you're just out to get on the beers their upstairs beer terrace is excellent. Veludo - If you sign up for their 'club' you get $5 Coronas any time. Gin Palace - another mad cocktail bar. One of my favourite post-work lounges. Three Degrees - They do $5 pints every Wednesday to clear the lines.

Price not really an object, and any drinks really, mainly spirits and the like, not used to the taste of beer yet. Just want a nice casual vibe. If you're after spirits these guys are the specialists: Golden Monkey (Rum) Gin Palace (Gin) Borsch Vodka & Tears (Vodka) Kodiak Club (Bourbon) Black Pearl are wicked all-round.

And as always, there isn't anything covered at uni that you can't find on google.
What course are you studying? I'm studying physics, maths (both calculus and algebra) and psychology. There's your problem right there. If you university is anything like mine your classes are probably full of engineering aspirants with ego's like mine :p

I've been dragged to Joint Bar far too many times on a drunken night out and it never ends well. jlm I assume you'd want this on a weekend, but my regular spot on a Thursday night would not disappoint, Perseverance on Brunswick St, no entry fee and it's uni night so the drinks are cheap and the place is always packed. Basics are $5 all night, $6.50 jager bombs and the dance floor is always packed with college girls.

So I'm at uni with a mate and his girlfriend, and I made the comment that he could be an architect. He said that architecture was a pointless degree. His girlfriend said it was as useless as our degree. They then started fighting about who's degree is more useless and now they're not talking to each other and all I can do is sit here and try not to laugh that I caused this awkward silence between us 3.
I'm a horrible person

The funnies thing about architecture at my uni, is that the Architecture building was designed by architects, and it's easily the least-well designed building on campus.

The uni I went to had a ridiculously badly designed architecture building... you don't happen to go to Curtin Uni in WA by any chance?

That's almost as good as Monash v Melbourne Uni rivalry - the designers of the West Gate Bridge were from Melbourne University. Monash requested to participate in the collapse investigation and there are still mangled pieces of the bridge on the campus as a reminder to Engineering students of the potential consequences of their mistakes.
