A friend of mine who works for Fulham told me: ‘We had a really good, tight-knit squad at Fulham just before he came in; the lads knew each other well and had a good level of confidence. It was almost as if he felt that by coming from United, Fulham were beneath him and, by extension, the players were beneath him. ‘So the manager called all the staff together and said, “Look, we need to sort this out before it gets out of hand and the atmosphere goes completely, does anybody have any suggestions?” ‘So I spoke up and said that I was very close to a coach at United and I could simply call him up and see how they’d handled him at United. The manager liked that idea and so the next day I called the coach at United and told him what was going on with Berba. ‘I said to him, “He’s creating a bit of friction, he doesn’t talk to any of the players except on the pitch when he’s berating them in front of the cameras for not passing him the ball. We explained to him that he would have to run a channel or two every now and again because we can’t always pass the ball into his feet, and he just looked at us in disgust. The team spirit is becoming fragile and the other players are losing confidence because they think they’re not good enough. You’ve got to help us, mate, how did you deal with it at United?” ‘There was a bit of a silence before he replied, almost as if he couldn’t believe that I’d asked him the question in the first place. “How did we deal with it?” he asked. “Well, it’s simple really, mate –we fucked him off to Fulham.
