Football Star Tim Cahill Unveils Fashion Line in Shanghai

Proving he’s worthy of more than a Socceroos jersey

by cidonierichards - Tue, Jun 21, 2016 05:25 PM
city weekend shanghai tim cahill 1
One of the biggest scoring players for the Australian Socceroos, Tim Cahill is proving he might just have what it takes to crack the lucrative and highly competitive world of luxe fashion in Shanghai with his menswear line, CAHILLPLUS.

While Cahill might have had a turbulent last few months in the Chinese Super League, after being released by Shanghai Shenhua and signing up to Greentown Hangzhou F.C, it doesn’t look like he is deterred as he is set to potentially crack the Chinese fashion market being the first ever Australian menswear designer to be picked up by JD.com, one of China’s biggest on-line retailers.

city weekend shanghai Tim Cahill 3

It’s hardly a new concept – sports stars dabbling their hand in the fashion world. We’ve seen it for years with the likes of sports greats like Jack Nicklaus, Serena and Venus Williams, David Beckham and LeBron James either endorsing fashion labels or trying their hand at designing but now fashion seems to have become a second career for an increasing number of athletes eager to expand their career, brand, and some might argue even prolong their moment in the celebrity spotlight.

When asked how much involvement the football legend has had in the actual designing side of his collection, Cahill was quick to make it very clear that he has always had a great love of fashion and style which grew after working alongside Giorgio Armani where he was a brand ambassador in New York for eight years.

“I’m not just the face of the brand, we’ve worked really hard on these designs and the whole marketing approach to gain entry into China and I’m part of the whole fashion design process,” he told City Weekend.

city weekend shanghai Tim Cahill 2

Cahill recently debut his collection at New York Fashion Week in February and again last night at Jackie Chan’s Gallery in Shanghai where some of China’s top sports stars including boxer Qu-Peng, Formula One Driver, Ma Qinghua, and footballer Chen Boliang modelled the collection in front of a packed audience. Some of Cahill’s good friends and celebrity sports stars also came to show their support including Wang Dalei, China’s national soccer team goalkeeper and Shanghai Shenhua star strikers Demba Ba and Obafemi Martins.

The CAHILLPLUS brand is on-trend, urban and fits the new realm of sports-luxe glam-casualness you’d expect to see on the streets of New York where Cahill drew much of his inspiration having lived there while playing for the NY Red Bulls, but the big question is whether this edged-up athletic-inspired apparel will make its mark with the Chinese local set.

“I’m not trying to change anyone’s sense of dressing, CAHILLPLUS is more about being comfortable and liking what you wear by embracing a multi-layered look with architecture elements in design,” he says.

Cahill went on to mention that his wife and four children have also embraced Shanghai and love being part of such an exciting city. We asked Cahill how different it was now being a role model in fashion instead of as a professional football player and where he believes his future is heading in Shanghai.

Cahill said he knows that there is life after football and he hopes he can show young people that they can also use their brain to good use off and on the field.

“We’ll see what happens in the next month, I think everything is a process. You know I don’t play in Australia but of course my friends and family are there. But from the football side of things, it’s a decision I’ll make later and whatever my wife and kids want to do, that’s what we’ll do – so no rush. I’m quite chilled and relaxed,” he says.

At least Harry Kewell's line is somewhat fashionable.

From what I can see this is the sort of stuff you can pick up at Myers already, just more expensive. I wouldn't pay that sort of money to wear Cahills stuff.

At least Kewell and Politix have some sort of designer appeal.
