Jackson Irvine: I jumped at the chance to join Burton Albion

JACKSON Irvine jumped at the chance to sign for Burton Albion

Comments (0)
JACKSON Irvine jumped at the opportunity to join Burton Albion and be part of the club's first ever Championship season. The 23-year-old Australian international is excited to be part of history at the Pirelli Stadium next campaign. The Brewers paid a club record fee – reported by the Herald in Scotland to be £250,000 but remaining undisclosed by Albion – to bring Irvine in last Friday, with the central midfielder making his first appearance in Brewers colours the next day against Stoke City.

Irvine, who has won four caps for the Socceroos, joined from Scottish Premiership side Ross County, who lifted the Scottish League Cup in March. The Staggies, like the Brewers, are a club on the rise and Irvine thinks both can achieve great things in 2016/17.

"Obviously I heard about the initial offer about a month ago, and it immediately sparked my interest," said Irvine. "The club has done amazing things over the last few years and it's a massive step up for me. As soon as the chance came around again, I jumped at it as quick as I could. It's a bigger stage, a bigger league and this club is progressing quicker than, I think, most people can believe.
"It's good to try to be a part of that. It is similar (to Ross County) in a way, and they're both similar history-wise. They've both come up from lower divisions and are finding themselves among the big leagues, but that doesn't mean you can't go on to achieve great things. We showed that (at County) last season up over the border. So there's no reason why this club can't have success over the coming seasons."

IRVINE TO GET USED TO THE PACE OF ENGLISH FOOTBALL

Steve Parkin
Irvine's first friendly with the Brewers, kicking off less than 24 hours after his signing was confirmed, went well. Irvine impressed in midfield in a 3-0 win over the Premier League Potters having played the second 45 minutes, with Albion splitting their squad in half for their opening two friendly matches. Irvine, however, admitted post-match that he felt he needed to get used to the pace of English football – and feels he will get that opportunity as the Brewers continue their pre-season ahead of the Championship kick-off on August 6.

"It's perfect timing (to come in) with three weeks to go until the first competitive game of the season," Irvine added. "It gives me a plenty of time and a few games to get to know everybody and get used to the style of play and adjust to the pace of the game. The pace of the game is a lot higher as I found against Stoke.

"(The ball) moves so much faster and you have to be so aware. You can't take that extra touch as I found a couple of times in midfield. Sometimes that extra touch is the one that means you get nipped. That's going to be something that I have a few weeks to adjust to. "But it's a perfect start, to be involved in 45 minutes."It's a great test. This is the standard that everyone strives to achieve – to get to the Premier League.

"A lot of those boys are full internationals with a few young boys thrown in. I felt we more than matched them and you have to understand that you're not going to have all the possession. But to wrap up the pressure and take your chances when they come is a good game plan and it worked perfectly on Saturday."

elo statistic show burton (elo ranking 391) below israeli mid table bnei sakhnin, liechtenstein team vaduz (only professional team is that exists), 6 place azerbaijan team neftchi

is clearly shown that championship is poor qualoity

as comparison, shit scottish league that i hate has celtic who are in 183 position

Not sure if serious.

Burton have yet to play a match at Championship level and you're comparing ELO rankings for teams that have never played eachother at any level, in competitions where teams rarely play eachother. Not only are ELO rankings a demonstrably poor method of ranking in football, but you're taking the fringe rankings which are even worse.

As a Derby fan and from a family from Burton, it's fantastic to see them in the Championship, something I never thought I'd see in my wildest dreams. I still recall when them remaining in the conference was seen as a challenge. Having Nigel back at the helm, seeing him win the promotion of promotions, and now them bringing in an Australian, it really is a dream.

Elo very good at ranking football as a past measurement

you are confusing future predictions and past measurement as being the same thing...Elo is very good at measuring the past

He'll get a lot of game time, and while they'll still be adding a number of new faces to help with the transtiion to a higher level he should be playing 40+ games next season at a decent level. Better than signing for a club like Leeds and being cover for the first team, siting on the bench for 40 games.

A good season this year and the bigger clubs will come chasing.

Are you sure that's Inala brah? I know I think he's the best Australian centre mid I've seen.

On topic I think Irvine will do very well in the championship, from what I've seen it will suit him (a lot more than mooy) very well. On the little I've seen of Irvine I think he'll work his way into a starting line up for the Roos before long.

im pretty happy about both the moves - they could have done much worse. it looks like they are both in the picture for first team football in a decent league. and it's not like rogic or juric etc. mooy and irvine seem to have a fair bit of stamina and can take a bit of roughhousing. they could really flourish in the championship. it's a great shop front.

good news anyway, for them and for australian football.

Because mooy is better.

for now.

point is they both have to make a step up to prove they can play at a higher level. mooy had a bigger step from the hal.

pretty silly to compare the league they played in rather than the players themselves.

that would really depend on what you are actually talking about.

comments on here are a lot more appropriate for such a signing.

why did so many crack a sad when aaron mooy made an even bigger step up from the HAL to the championship?

good news anyway, for them and for australian football.

Because mooy is better.

for now.

point is they both have to make a step up to prove they can play at a higher level. mooy had a bigger step from the hal.

pretty silly to compare the league they played in rather than the players themselves.

Mate don't go down that rabbithole with him

what are you on about crack head? what argument are you even having? are you winning it?
