but hes had multiple stints in there. but really when your institutionalized at 11 or 12, what hope do you have?

Don't need to be a serial killer for the mask and being strapped to the chair. This is done in America in the Jail/watchhouse, the one before they are even sentenced and sent to prison. It is justified when someone is spitting and acting out with violent behaviour.

Is there any footage of them actually assaulting him though? I get that he is a troubled teenager and has had a rough life and the guards are some bad eggs but lets not get carried away. The spotlight has been shown on them and they will hopefully get what coming to them, but as they say there is always two sides to the story.

One of him being held by his neck and thrown into his cell, another being punched in the face and kneed in the ribs, 2 clips of him having a man pinning him on the ground as another pulls his underwear off. Plus being pepper sprayed while securely locked in his isolation cell and left in there for 7 minutes struggling to breathe as the guards stand around laughing

4 corners isnt working off hear say or eye witness accounts, they have footage of it happening.

The current prison system for adults and children is flawed, it doesn't work.

Prison needs to be equal parts punishment and rehabilitation.

The public will benefit greatly from the increased rehab of criminals rather then locking them away and thinking the problem is fixed, infact it really makes it worse.

The footage of that kid in the chair actually shows the guards talking to him, reassuring him, asking if the straps are OK and explaining why they're doing it before they left him there.

Roar#1 won't tell you that though.

Dylan admits he did wrong. As a football-loving teenager who ended up committing a 24-hour crime spree while high on ice.

“He’s been in and out of jail from the age of 11, 10,” Kira told ABC radio. “That’s half of his whole life.”

But the young teenager had a troubled past.

The youth worker told news.com.au that the then 14-year-old had “underlying trauma” and had been in trouble with the NT Police as a juvenile.

A youth justice advocacy project worker had reported that Dylan had suffered “anger issues” and had a “propensity to spit”.

Then on February 7, 2014, Dylan got drunk and “high on ice” and with two other young men went on a 24-hour crime spree, attacking two men and a police officer.

It was during his incarceration following being found guilty for this series of incidents that Dylan was placed in restraints and the spit hood in the now infamous Don Dale Youth Detention Centre in Darwin.

ABC-TV’s Four Corners showed images of Dylan hooded and strapped into a mechanical restraint chair for almost two hours in March 2015, when he was serving a total of two years and three months’ minimum sentence.

Dylan’s spree began in Alice Spring’s iconic Todd Street, where he and the two other young men tried to rob a man walking to work.

A court later heard that Dylan, then a slightly built teen, ran bare-chested at the man, yelling “you fat white racist dog. You yelled at us”.

[size=7]The three teens took the man’s wallet, knocked him to the pavement and kicked him in the ribs[/size].

Still high on drugs the following day, the boys ambushed Luke McIntyre near a store where the 17-year-old was trying to buy cigarettes.

[size=7]Dylan struck him with a mop handle, punched him in the face and stole his wallet. McIntyre was bashed unconscious, then his three assailants fled in a Holden Commodore[/size].

[size=7]Dylan was behind the wheel and tried to run down a “terrified” Constable Gerard Reardon who had ordered the trio to stop.[/size]

[size=7]On August 13, 2014, Northern Territory Supreme Court Justice Peter Barr sentenced Dylan to a maximum of three years and eight months for attempted robbery, aggravated robbery and recklessly endangering serious harm.[/size]

Dylan, who was already in custody, had a 20 month non-parole period to serve. Justice Barr noted that the 16-year-old had a very troubled past, [size=7]dating back to when he was an 11-year-old and had committed more than 50 offences, including crimes of violence, over five years[/size].

Placed in custody in the Don Dale centre, [size=7]Dylan was regarded as a “notorious” juvenile prisoner.[/size]

Isnt locking a child away for years meant to "fix them" or make them better people ?clearly that didnt work

And tbh the footage of him strapped to the chair is the least disturbing part of the programme, I can see incidents where that would be appropriate.

Yeah and i'm sure beating and mentally torturing young offenders is definitely going minimise their chance of re-offending and make them mentally capable of reintegrating properly with their community. I'm sure society is just stoked that they will have to continue to pay for this cycle of institutionalised criminality rather than attempting to break it the first time.

But the fact that you think this sort of abuse towards anyone in the care of the state, let alone a minor, is both amusing and acceptable shows how much of a backwards revolting cretin you are. Get in the fucking sea.

Toughlove I don't get why you are attempting to character assassinate Dylan in this way. I haven't seen anyone suggest that he hasn't gotten up to some pretty bad things :-k I have seen some suggest that maybe some of the things that have happened to him over the various times he's been in prison haven't helped him and may have made things worse.

I get that there are bad things that are happening to kids all over Australia and it's despicable but that doesn't diminish this issue particularly when the state have such a hand in it which should be a model citizen.

Do you not think that had he been dealt with differently at 9 or 10, he wouldn't be where he is today?

Not once have I said what happened was OK but it is understandable that a violent, spitting shit of a kid got belted up for, you know, being a violent spitting shit of a kid.

5 years this bloke has been a criminal. 50 offences. Which bit of that do you not understand.

Some people are irredeemable and not able to be rationally engaged.

If that was your kid knocked unconscious and kicked in the ribs and robbed or your dad that nearly got run over by a car or any other of the dozens of offences he committed against you or someone in your family you wouldn't be sprouting such garbage.

Clearly he's thick as fuck because you'd think after the first dozen or so visits to the magistrate, the counselors, the elders and other DOCS staff he might have had an epiphany and thought to himself maybe this caper's not for me.

He's had 6 years to sort his shit out and don't tell me no one has tried to help over that whole time.

Unlike the stupid bogans like you applauding this, I actually don't believe in people being violently abused in detention, because there is no beneficial outcome from it. This idea that we need to just lock people in a hellhole, throw away the key and give no thought to what comes next is totally against all evidence we have at reducing the cost of crime and is only pushed by the mentally deficient.
