Last season, Tim Cahill's homecoming and a cashed-up campaign featuring schoolkid "Yoshi" touring the 10 clubs in the hope of finding a team to support gave the competition a boost in interest.

This season, Gallop said fans would see the extension of that campaign, which hopes to turn the game's sizeable participation base into A-League fans.

"We will follow up the success of last year's 'You've Gotta Have a Team' campaign with fanbassadors at each club," he said.

"It's part of the ongoing strategy to connect the base of the pyramid to the A-League and W-League.

"This season we'll be working hard with the clubs to promote a range of players rather than previous years when a few marquees have grabbed all the attention."

Tom Rogic should be the face of the game in Australia

15 reading now

Apparently you still need a Sherrin to sell the Socceroos to Victorians. In 2017. Yes, really. Fresh from the critical World Cup win over Saudi Arabia, Ange Postecoglou takes his pumped-up players to the MCG next Tuesday night to face Brazil in a prestige friendly that doubles as the warm-up match for this month's FIFA Confederations Cup in Russia.

Somewhere along the line, the promoters felt it necessary to sell Aussie Rules in order to sell tickets with the Socceroos due in town. So a Sherrin was dispatched to Rio de Janeiro a few months ago to film an advertisement featuring the slogan: "We know the Brazilians have mastered the round ball ... but how will they fare with the oval ball?" Umm, who cares?

Cue bare-chested men kicking a Sherrin on Copacabana Beach, and doing a pretty good job of it, it must be said. The clear inference being that while Melbourne belongs to Aussie Rules, it can occasionally be generous enough to open its heart to "novelty" events. The underlying message – more than 130 years after football was first played as an organised sport in Melbourne – is that football remains an interloper. We are in the era of "fake news" I guess.

The ad was pulled within 48 hours. Football Federation Australia, thankfully, was as indignant about the tired cliche as the rank-and-file, and read the riot act. Brazil, five-times world champions, a novelty act? The Socceroos, not that long ago the most popular national team in the country, a sideshow? Only in Melbourne.

For all that, it's been a struggle to move tickets for a game that deserves a decent crowd. The MCG sold out on Friday for Brazil's match with Argentina, but will probably be less than half-full for the appearance of the Socceroos. What's happened to the pulling power of our own national team? That remains the most important context.

The Socceroos couldn't fill Adelaide Oval for the crunch game against the Saudis, and are unlikely to muster more than 40,000 fans for the game against Brazil. True, the Brazilian touring party may be without Neymar, Casemiro and Roberto Firmino, but it still possesses electric talents such as Gabriel Jesus, Douglas Costa and Alex Sandro, as well as regulars Paulinho, Philippe Coutinho and Renato Augusto. This is a star-studded Brazilian team sheet. The only difference between the Selecao's two games in Australia is that Australia are playing in one of them. The travesty is that comes at a cost.

Postecoglou has appealed, passionately, not only for the paying public to come in bigger numbers, but to engage. The Socceroos have now played eight home matches on the road to Russia and only once – the first qualifier against Bangladesh – has the "house full" sign been posted. And that was in Perth, the smallest venue. In terms of atmosphere, it's been tepid all the way.

Fact is, the Socceroos haven't sold out any major venues since the 2015 Asian Cup. There's been plenty of introspection, but perhaps it comes down to something as obvious, and simple, as this: the time has come to create a new star.

The challenge is to choose the right player, and then to properly promote him. On the latter, FFA's unwillingness to put money and resources into marketing has to stop. On the former, who?

Three candidates stand out. Mat Ryan, Aaron Mooy and Tom Rogic. Ryan, especially if he moves to the EPL, has credible claims but rarely do goalkeepers become poster boys. Mooy has the talent, but not the personality. Which leaves Rogic.

Rogic ticks all the boxes to become the next Socceroos star. He had a taste of stardom as a teenager when he won the Nike talent quest, and didn't particularly enjoy it. But time has moved on, he's become more accustomed to the limelight since emerging at Celtic, and the word is he's matured as much as a person as a footballer. Soon to marry his childhood sweetheart, Rogic is poised to hit the big time at a stage of his life and career when he's better equipped to handle the pressure.

The Socceroos need a new Harry Kewell, or Tim Cahill, or Mark Viduka. Badly. Much as Postecoglou is an outstanding public presence, he's not a player. Rogic is, and an exceptional one at that. The man to get the turnstiles moving again? Why not?

Tom Rogic should be the face of the game in Australia

Get in The Game

Perth Glory’s audacious bid to recruit Socceroos hero Tim Cahill to spearhead their championship tilt this season has been revealed.
As Glory plot to contain the brilliance of Cahill in tomorrow’s match against Melbourne City at nib Stadium, the club has opened up on the exclusive details of its pitch to woo the biggest name in Australian soccer.
Footy Tipping and Fantasy competition with $150,000 in prizes up for grabs!
Glory chief executive Peter Filopoulos confirmed Perth had made a written offer to the 37-year-old last June in an early attempt to sign the star striker.
As part of the bidding attempt, Glory proposed using Cahill as the public face for tourism in WA. Lucrative commercial agreements with the State Government and Channel 7 were floated ahead of the initial approach.
Cahill is understood to have considered the offer.
In a written response to the club, Australia’s leading World Cup goal scorer said he had been “blown away” by the level of detail in the recruiting strategy.
He ultimately signed a two-year deal to join City two months later.

The Central Coast Mariners' Roy O'Donovan was sent off after 23 minutes for contact.
“I felt it was incumbent on the football club to ask the question and have a conversation and enter into dialogue with Tim to see if it was workable,” Filopoulos said.
“We were going to structure the deal in a unique way by involving the broader WA community, government, media agencies like Channel 7, Crown Resorts and Tourism WA by potentially making Cahill the face of Asia for WA tourism.
“He was actually quite impressed with the thinking behind it. Our thinking was about not just him becoming an ambassador for Perth Glory but for him to take an ambassadorial role for tourism in this State.”
Cahill will make his first A-League appearance in Perth tomorrow in what could be a preview of an elimination semifinal between the two teams next weekend.
Glory officials are banking on Diego Castro being available, but coach Kenny Lowe said the Spaniard was no guarantee to play.
If Perth beat third-placed City by at least four goals, they will secure a home final.
They will find out just before kick-off whether they can overtake Brisbane Roar, currently fourth.

Ball boy expertly trolls Tim Cahill after hatching a plan with friends

Everyone in the world knows what Tim Cahill’s goal celebration is by now: He runs to the corner flag and pretends to box with it.

So one ball boy, knowing that he was in the perfect position to troll Cahill, hatched a plan to disrupt the well-known celebration if Cahill scored Saturday. Take a look:

Cahill knew better than to chase the flag around and gave up, boxing with the air over the corner markings. It’s still less awkward than his goal celebration a couple weeks ago where he ran confusingly ran around and somehow injured himself.

The ball kid, Luke, later told FOX Sports Australia that he and the other ball boys conspired to yank the flag if Cahill scored, a plan he and his friend thought up.

“We all had a plan, one of my mates and me had a plan, that if he scored, and he ran over to the corner, and we’d lift it out of the corner,” he said.

It wasn’t a sign a disrespect, though — the ball boy said he is a big Cahill fan and Cahill didn’t seem bothered by it either. After the match, Cahill got a photo with the ball boy and shook his hand.

It was good fun — exactly the way trolling should be done.

Even Timmy calling out the hacks at SBS now! I couldn't believe it when I saw the headline as well. To think SBS used to be well regarded as football reporters. They've fallen so far, they are an embarrassment now. Can't somebody do something over there. Maybe for a start, get a commentator that can distinguish the players on the field and can see what's happening during the match. Maybe then get the kid on work experience to stop writing the articles about the matches, and get a qualified journo to write those articles.

What if he had made a bet a won 200k? $500 is way too low for a serious incident like this.

Then he would face further corruption charges instead ... betting on games tends to lead to jail terms and bans.

Fair point. If they deem it serious enough to have a fine imposed for a breach, then surely a higher figure should be attached.

Besides, doesn't he or City have a lacky to do this sort of thing?

FFA no doubt pay him to stick as much shit as possible on his twitter account.

Fine the FFA for entrapment

Tim Cahill Facing FFA Phone Fine

May have broken anti-corruption laws

Tim Cahill Facing FFA Phone Fine

Melbourne City megastar Tim Cahill may have run afoul of the Football Federation Australia’s strict anti-corruption protocols when he admitted to using his mobile phone during a match, Fairfax Media has reported.

The FFA confirmed they will launch an investigation into Cahill’s conduct after he said he was sending texts to his family during City’s 1-1 draw with Sydney FC last weekend.

Cahill was speaking to Fox Sports on Friday night about opposition fans booing him, and said that he had used his phone at half time.

"I think the hardest thing for me against Sydney FC, sitting on the bench for 80 minutes, was when your kids are sitting behind you and your nephew and niece," Cahill said.

"I think that hit me harder personally because it was verbal abuse and direct. I went into half-time and texted my missus telling her to go home because I had a four-year-old sitting in the crowd."

If Cahill’s anecdote is true, it could be considered a breach of the strict ban on use of communication devices between entry to the stadium until after games finish.

The FFA confirmed they will investigate the claims and can levy a fine up to $500.
