Less than three weeks out from the season, I wish we'd see Fox Sports showing some matches from the finals last season or 'best games of 2015/16'. Or even replays of the FFA Cup matches in the lead up to these FFA Cup matches.

Youre kidding me.. hes not playing the derby round 2?

Yeah he will be in Rd 2 derby. It's the first round he's missing due to international duty with the Japan game.

It would be nice wouldn't it. It's not as if Fox Sports is being filled by anything other fan City Tv etc.

I'm assuming that leading up to the season launch they will play the grand final and semis from last year, but there should be enough content to show classic matches from years past. The 5-4 Sydney - CCM comes to mind way back in the earlier seasons. Plenty more like that if Fox actually wanted to show some.

They do show small "classic match" highlight reels between programs at times. It would be good though if they had 30 minute match highlights, say once a day in the week leading up to round 1.

Interesting stat - more people online steamed the Australia Vietnam under 19s than viewers in Sydney for their Afl final

That's a fantastic result for youth soccer in this country.

I'm just noticing that the Giants got decent ratings for the prelimin final loss yesterday evening:

@MediaweekAUS: Sat TV #AFLFinals #AFLGiantsDogs Seven 1,237k (Syd 162k Mel 715k Ade 178k Per 182k) 7mate Bri 77k

Total FTA ratings (5 city metro):  1,314k

 #AFLFinals #AFLGiantsDogs #FoxFooty 534k (New AFL Foxtel record - beats Collingwood v Sydney Prelim 2012 503k) + #5 best ever Foxtel

Total ratings (Fox plus FTA 5 city metro):  1,848k

Regionals will push that over 2.2 million, which is a pretty good result.

It looks like the Giants are starting to make a bit of an impact.

SBS Manchester United v Leicester #MUNLEI 203k (Syd 52k Mel 74k Bri 28k Ade 23k Per 27k)

I would have thought people would be indiscriminately watching the EPL because of its channel. But SBS seem to be getting big ratings for Man Utd games and poor ratings for games with other teams

Seems to me that there might be a bit of choice behind viewer behaviour

Yes, 162k in Sydney on FTA  (plus a record Fox audience of 534k, which would have had a decent Sydney viewership as well).

All up, ratings of over 2.2 million is damn good.

That's the key outcome here - and that outcome has been achieved because a Sydney audience has tuned into to watch the Giants (certainly in far, far bigger numbers than would watch any of the Sydney soccer clubs).

'People like you' - mr Val not only clearly losing his argument buy his marbles too. .For the amount of money invested in AFL the north ratings are extremely poor. Verging on diabolical considering they think it's Australia's game.

As I said, will be telling of the sokkah in a few more weeks draws more people at the derby than the finals game did.

May do, and about 5% of the ratings the Giants got will tune in to watch it on TV (if you're lucky).

imagine if the FFA spent 150 million on the wsw and in their biggest ever game less than a third of their members bothered turning up.

The AFL is about to increase its cash holdings to the tune of $2.5 billion, kicks in from next year.

The AFL is getting that windfall on the back of results like last night's ratings - which are huge - I'm really not sure what you are looking at - the ratings are through the roof.

And the best bit - the game involved Sydney's 2nd team and one of Melbourne's smallest teams - it's a fantastic ratings result, no matter which way you slice and dice it.

Ratings in nsw are almost four times lower for previous corresponding swans finals. That's startling for media buyers.

But hey, everyone in Melbourne is watching so all is hunky dory I guess.

That doesn't sound right at all.

The Giants getting 162k in Sydney (plus a national audience of  534k on Fox) is fantastic - it wasn't even on prime time - and they were playing against one of the smaller Melbourne clubs - it's a great result.

Giants/Dogs drew a total average audience of 2.387 million and a peak of 3.65 million, behind only 2.47 million who watched '07 Cats v Pies.

So 2nd highest non-GF rating in AFL history, highest AFL Fox rating in histgory and about 700k higher than what the NRL got later that night in prime time - it's an unbelievably high rating.

Er, what has any of that got to do with swans Friday fta ratings in Sydney v their previous results ?

Here they are:

Fri TV #AFL #AFLFinals @7Sport #AFLCatsSwans Seven 739k (Mel 572k Ade 167k) 7mate 293k (Syd 103k Bri 55k Per 135k)
Total Metro FTA = 1032k

That's 103k in Sydney on 7Mate - anything over 100k for 7Mate is exceptionally good - you won't find anything on 7Mate getting anywhere near it.

And the Fox rating was 497k - once again, an excellent rating.

Looks like the Storm rates more in Vic than the Swans or GWS rate in Sydney.

AFL spend 200million+ in the last 5 years and still the Storm do them in.  Ouch.

Mr AFL

As long as AFL buy ratings ,they can delude themselves all they want about the success of GWS and GCS.
This year they stacked the GWS with outside players to get success, just like they used to do with Brisbane Lions.Look at the Lions now.
Face the facts. The only way AFL can sustain itself outside its core states is to set up expat teams chocked with expats. They live or die on the expats they are handed.
NRL and Rugby do that as well.
So be it.I am happy to follow NRL,which I grew up with ,knowing Melbourne Storm are a really a second Brisbane team in disguise. So I imagine the same goes for AFL fans with GWS and co.

But,I come to this forum to discuss Football and you making a passing reference to Football then launching into an expose on AFL is clear trolling.
It's clear to me ,you are incapabale of making any serious comments about Football without suckling on the AFL nipple you are inexorably fused to.

Giants vs Dogs rated about 700k more  than the NRL game across Fox/FTA metro and regional.

Seriously dude, 700k is a whipping of the very highest order.

Incredibly, that game involved Sydney's 2nd team and one of the smaller Melbourne clubs.

In fact, each and every AFL finals game has outrated the NRL equivalent by hundreds of thousands across the finals series.
