The ball boy who lifted the corner flag out of the ground before Tim Cahill could do his silly shadow boxing goal celebration ;)

Cheers Dave.

I wonder if all ball boys will do that now when he scores a goal. Or maybe stand in front of the flag so Timmy ends up punching you... imagine the headlines!

He is a soccer player so when he connects his fists to the ball boy's head he will probably go down.

My copy of "the book" turned up today. Taking it out of the postal pack, my trembling hands opened it up, by chance, at pages 44/45 which are about the 1953 "Matthews Final".

I have a tenuous connection to that fixture: my mother once purchased a cat from Doug Holden's wife...   spooky huh?

The trump racism thing was weird though. Felt a bit "crowbarred in".

As brilliant as Squires is, his achilles' heel is a consistent lack of impartiality when it comes to covering political issues. I get that The Guardian is read by the kind of people who think Q&A is fair and balanced and that anybody to the right of Marx is a card-carrying One Nation supporter, but Squires' comparative silence in bagging leftist politicians or talking points sticks out like a stubbed toe. And in this case (as pointed out) come across as clutching at straws.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to burn crosses on Briggs' front lawn while painted in blackface and booing a framed picture of Adam Goodes...

There are only two intellectually honest debate tactics: (a) pointing out errors or omissions in your opponent’s facts, or (b) pointing out errors or omissions in your opponent’s logic. All other debate tactics are intellectually dishonest - John T. Reed

He's under no obligation to be impartial or hide his own politics in his work, and I don't see how it's a weakness in the comedic effect.

I like stuff from people I politically disagree with who throw their $0.02 into their work, Tom Clancy novels come to mind.

You're just gonna have to step out of your safe space, accept that you can actually listen to people that have different views and enjoy his work, or you're the one who misses out.

Lol try bitching more. Cartoon satirists go for the easiest targets, especially if they are in power, and the right side have made it laughably easy for him in both the UK and Australia.

I read every new strip via the uploads here. Leave safe-spaces for the regressives. My point is that Squires is clever and funny, and I have no doubt he'd be clever enough to throw shit over the other fence if he made the effort. Shows like South Park and online publications like The Betoota Advocate, for instance, do a great job at producing satire and clever social commentary while ensuring there are no sacred cows spared.

95% politics.

I have to agree here....I didn't mind at first and I'm not opposed to chucking in the odd gag if it's relevant but I do feel lately it's become not about the league anymore.

That's fine but it's just not what I enjoy about his cartoons.

I have my own inner monologue if I want irreverent political satire

No it isn't. It is the chorus of "Fascist Groove Thang" by Heaven 17 from 1981.

But nice try.

On one hand, I don't mind attempts to place football within wider culture or "the cultural milieu" as Decentric would say.

On the other hand, probably indicates how boring the league is at the moment.

It doesn't even seem that funny. I thought it was funny the first 2 times, but now it just seems a little too contrived for my tastes.

There are much funnier and better cartoonists elsewhere.

The Australia Day one was kinda funny...

Don't get me wrong the odd one is kinda funny but it seems like he is forcing it way too hard. Really not what I have wanted to see in an Australian football cartoon.
