Campbelltown IMO is the next logical place to put the next Sydney team... massive growth area and the Wests Tigers play only 4 games a year .. a nice stadium next to a railway station and close to major roads...

The Southern bid will effect SFC and to deny this by the bid folk is well I think outright lying ...

the south western corridor is set for massive population numbers as is just as close to the gong as  in fact according to google maps ... the gong to Cronulla is 1 hr 1 mim .. the gong to Campbelltown is 47 mins...

For me the answer is obvious where the next Sydney team should go.

people arguing that southern sydney doesnt have an identity, st george, shire and wollongong are eternal rivals and will never unite, yet they argue that south-west sydney has an identity and that the people of campbelltown, picton and oran park will unite.

South west Sydney has been a separate region of Sydney with Liverpool being the gateway to it since the early days of the colony.  Not sure what your point is.

and in that exact same essence the airport area, st george and the shire are the gateway to the south, since in the early days of colonial arrival to botany bay. yet apparently there is no southern sydney identity.

To tell you the truth no one identifies themselves in Sydney and says I am from South Sydney. There are plenty of people who identify with being from the shire though. It's just a different world in there for some reason.

Just out of genuine curiosity.. what would St.George areas identity be? is it the same as Sutherland?

My own personal thinking is if I was to design a kit/logo for a new South Sydney club it would be somewhat in the form of beach/water or ships(referencing Captain Cook/Endeavour) but to be honest other than St.George Cross or a Dragon I cant think of much else for St.George, is there something that can be intertwined? would a ship cover St.George aswell?

I think the goal of this new team should be to base themselves in the shire and to get as many people as they can, from there, to buy in and be the core support and let the people from the St.George and Wollongong areas decide if they like what they see and want in. If not it might push more people from St.George area to Sydney FC or WSW and at the same time might actually strengthen/consolidate the support for the Wolves and their bid.

I really like the name Australis.. may seem 'plastic' at first glance to some but its something thats original and unique and in my opinion draws curiosity and intrigue. If you were to look down the ladder and see Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth, Sydney and then come across Australis, I know if it were me, I would ask the questions of Who? and Where? Then being able to draw the connection through the meaning of Australis to give you that understanding. I haven't read it myself but someone mentioned the bid doesn't want the word Sydney in the name and I think this is a great alternative to just 'Southern FC'

Is Glebe in Southern Sydney?

No, Glebe is just west of the CBD, they are mixing it up with Wentworth Park I presume.

Jubilee is pretty much at Kogarah....Banksia if I'm not mistaken.

Yeah I dont think it is too out there because it means "southern" and they have stated the want "southern" in the name as you know.

As I wrote earlier I would go with "Terras" as their nickname.

Doesn't it mean "of the south" rather than "southern" so when the time comes to adding the prerequisite FC, it should go before not after.

I think it can mean both , Terra Australis can mean land of the south or southern land

From New Latin aurora australis, from Latin aurora ‎(dawn) + australis ‎(southern).

Adjective[edit]

austrālis mf (neuter austrāle); third declension

  1. southern
  2. (substantive) the south pole
  3. (as a specific epithet) Australian

But "FC Australis" would be ok too

and in that exact same essence the airport area, st george and the shire are the gateway to the south, since in the early days of colonial arrival to botany bay. yet apparently there is no southern sydney identity.

I understand what you mean now.  Yes Southern Sydney has been a region of Sydney for yonks.  My recollections go back to the 50's and i've never known it as anything else.  Of course separate LGA's have their specific identity within what is a larger looser connection which is what regions are.

Thanks champ tell me which football club in the world uses 3 different home grounds successfully? 3 stadiums is the dumbest thing ive heard and the fact u would back that makes me question ur whole belief on this topic.

My point is.that if willongong are never getting a team, dont u think people would be more prepared to travel half the distance to watch a.team that at least has some affiliation with them than a wsw or syd fc? Of course they will. Especially when the club plays 2 home games agaisnt both syd fc ansmd wsw. Fans will flock there from wollongong.

See people here say that people in the sth dont relate to ppl from the shire, well.i have some news for them, people from manly dont really relate to ppl that come from sothern parts of sydney or the west, yet sydney fc has fans from both those areas, and we still manage to avg the second highest attendances year in year out.

A team purely from wollongong will get u 8-9k hardcore fans with very little room to grow. It will be similar version of newcastle jets which to be blatently honest doesnt excite me at all, and nor does it for most aleague gans when they watch newcastle on tv. They would become a niche club run on a budget alla ccm and newy. If i had to choose between a mega club with huge backing and broader representation alla fc and wsw, or a niche club like the gong alla ccm or newy, i know which one id rather watch play.

I never, ever said I backed the 3 stadium idea. Bro, I don't even back the combined team. I back a single Wollongong bid which is 1 stadium. You have missed my whole point and now I'm questioning your understanding of my belief on this topic.

Anyway, there is no doubt the combined team would have support. But most wouldn't be behind it like we would be behind a Wollongong side on its own. A combined side does not feel like "my" team... I dont consder myself a "Sydneysider" and Wollongong and Southern Sydney are completely different areas. And your argument about Manly people is exactly my point. They don't "relate" but only support Sydney FC because its the only team to follow. If there was a North Sydney side do you honestly think they would support Sydney FC?

Three stadiums does seem a stretch.  I'm guessing the initial strategy is to be all things to all people to get their hands on a license and then once that is achieved, a bit of pragmatism will set in.

Don't all yell at once ... but I recall I think about Hal 2 maybe Hal 3 some firm did a study on Australian sport and said were the next four expansion teams should be.

Southern Sydney,  Western Sydney , South Western Sydney, and Canberra ...

There reasoning was interesting and I have often wondered if they were beyond crazy or had a very valid point.

They argued the strength of both the AFL and NRL was having a city they played a lot out of and this would create many stories and lead to a lot of general talk between different fans. The interest generated by Sydney would create in its own right a media interest.... they then said to put three teams in Melbourne when the dust had settled for similar reason...

The argument was to launch these 6 teams by Hal 8.

They argued further argued by having a strong presence in Sydney and Melbourne and connections in Canberra was the both the fastest and safest model and would get the best media deals...

If the logic still applies then both expansion teams should be in Sydney...

Oct 2015 Frank Lowy

Lowy had some choice words for Sydney FC coach Graham Arnold, who said he feared for the club's future if a third Sydney team was introduced.

As it stands, Phoenix has four years to demonstrate that they are an asset to the competition and not a liability, instead of simply asking for a 10-year extension to their licence.

"And my advice to Graham Arnold is to focus on making Sydney FC a champion team instead of entering a debate he knows nothing about," he said.

Lowy also took aim at Sky Blues chairman Scott Barlow, who on Wednesday said he had been assured by FFA that no new A-League licences would be issued in the near future, warning a southern Sydney team would have a catastrophic impact on his club.

Lowy said FFA was obliged to explore options to replace the Phoenix, since the A-League's broadcast agreement requires a 10-team competition is maintained - but that no decisions have been made.

"Clearly, a new team in south Sydney is one of those options," Lowy said.

Despite being a guest speaker at Sydney FC's launch, Lowy took a subtle swipe at the Sky Blues board who fought publicly against the potential introduction of a third team in the city. A southern Sydney team remains among the front runners to be granted an A-League licence, despite the region being a key membership base for Sydney FC.

Lowy suggested clubs should not interfere with the expansion process on the basis of their own agendas if it comes at the cost of the greater good of domestic football.

"Those [expansion] teams are going to butt up against existing teams and some existing clubs won't like that," he said. "But we have to look past that and not look to be influenced by the politics, but be influenced by the ultimate growth of the game itself."
