So what would be better for football on Ten? Ten loses the BBL to another network and leaves Ten with just A League.

I am expecting alot of cross promotion on Tens top rating shows The Project , Ten news  etc. Now that we are part of the cartel that is Nine Seven Ten  I am expecting an uptick in the amount of cross promotion between networks as occurs in other codes.  Something SBS couldnt deliver.!!!

They over pay for 4 to 5 games and film/produce Wellington home games.

I have to agree with bluebird here a bit. Sbs and channel 10 were both as accessible as one another.

This is a step in the right direction for exposure. My only issue is that it will be broadcast in Standard Definition, which is a real shame to see in this day and age.
My big hope is that when the next Sydney or Melbourne derby is on, they'll host it on the main TEN channel, so we can get:
a) A prolific A-League derby match on FTA
b) Live in HD
c) On a Saturday night during November/December when there's no other sporting competition
d) AND there's decent cross-promotion and media hype in the lead up.

I hope that TEN take the chance to do that for the prolific games (even if it's just 2-3 times per season) so we can get a definitive answer on what the A-League viewing figures are capable of hitting.

Does everything start the same time next A-League season starts - i.e. any Socceroos friendlies before that won't be FTA?

Also I'm assuming the Friday game will no longer be on SBS?

I'm not sure if anyone has posted this, but this article is from the NZ press:

https://nz.sports.yahoo.com/football/a/35734202/tens-a-league-tv-deal-a-mixed-bag-expert/#page1

Far from landing the big pay day it hoped, Football Federation Australia may at best have broken even in a new arrangement to broadcast A-League matches on free-to-air TV.

Network Ten will live simulcast Fox Sports' coverage of Saturday night games on its One channel after SBS2's Friday night coverage ended last season.

It essentially means FFA failed to sell free-to-air rights to a major commercial network's main channel.

Instead, it went back to Fox Sports under its six-year, $346 million deal to broadcast all games.

"If it was on Ten's main channel, that would be much, much more attractive. Channel Ten has got to attract people across to One to build it.

"Unless they do some massive cross-promotion, it's not necessarily going to be a huge winner."

Smith said Fox Sports was the biggest benefactor from the deal.

"In essence, it's not going head-to-head (with a rival network)," he said.

"Clearly the strategy of Fox Sports is different to what it used to be and it's saying, 'we'll put some content on free-to-air as an enticer to subscribe'."

Devil is in the detail...

Fox were always going to charge the FFA $2m for providing the coverage to FTA, which the FFA had to recoup from the FTA network before they made any money for themselves.  So the big question is - are Fox paying the FFA $2m for the rights to on-sell, or are they waiving the $2m in return for being able to on-sell?  It makes no difference to how much money the FFA actually has - but it appears that they are trying to make out that they are $2m better off, when in reality they probably aren't.  Oh well...

Still, despite that technicality...  Positive news that the game will be on a major network - even if it is on their secondary channel.

it doesn't make a difference to be honest.... For the next 2 years, it will be on OneHD.

Either way, foxtel or channel 10 have to make money off this one game a week even though its only 2 million a year. I would of been  happy if One HD got it for free to be honest

That is precisely the point Benjamin is making, as far as the FFA is concerned, Ten is getting the A-League for free.

Fact is we pay more $$$$ then TEN network for A-league coverage. FFA needs every cent it can get and this deal confirms it - Never will I have to consider what people say about SKY TV paying Fk all for A-League rights again.

Oh i didnt realise sky was fta over in new zealand. Assumed it was like fox here which is pay tv and if that were the csse then lets do apples with apples comparison. 57m vs 280k...

So yeah there is zero fta c9verage in nz that have paid for it and only a measily 280k on PAY tv.

With the new TV deal in place and more money coming our way cant see the owners pulling the plug in a hurry. Anyway enjoy your FTA coverage is only a good thing and a truth to how much its worth to other networks in Australia - big fat $0.

Is this seriously a gee up. Remind me which fta station ever considered bidding in nz for the aleague? None big fat zero. And on pay tv its 280k vs our 57m per year. So spare us the ridiculous argument and admit how insanely shit u country is when it comes.to backing football. 280k all up from ALL media broadcasters.

You guys are looking at it all wrong. Sky TV is extra tv money that NO OTHER CLUB is asked to contribute.
Fox sports when they pay for the rights are also paying for the right to show Nix games.

Great news. Time ago many were prepared for the FFA to pay for the privilege to be on FTA for the sake of promoting the game and now there's the whingeing because FFA didn't make any money out of it. You just can't win here. The result is overwhelmingly positive for the game.

I can't see 10 not broadcasting ... what I can see is Rupert will buy 10 ....with changes that look like going through the federal parliament being allowed to own both his newspapers and 10... and Fox.. he will be allowed to..he has already set up his invoicing system that both 10 and Fox can combine there advertising invoices.

Given much of the reason 10 is losing money is because it is over paying US corporations for content including Fox US   ... don't believe all the BS about 10 ....its being set up for a News take over and has been for a while now.

If anything when the take over happens it will be in News interest to promote the hell out of us ..

Watch the parliament over the next month or so and see the changes will be made... let 10 almost fail or totally fail... Rupert comes in and re negotiates the overseas contracts and 10 is in profit again and he brought Football for a song ...

Remember last year 10 had a 685 million dollar revenue... take 5% to 10% of US programming costs and wam bam thank you mam profit agian ... and also 10 is low on Australian content and Australian content cost a bomb to make ... we are quite cheap... there was never a doubt 10 would not get us and cheap..

Its for all of us now to help 10 rate its head off so in two years its worth more.

But as someone said we now have a foot in the door ... I hope we don't waste it..

Great post and very interesting. I think u are spot on. Makes complete sense. Wouldnt be surprised if alot of the newscorp media are pushing a lot of negative reporting on 10 atm.

It's asking a lot to expect Rupert and News to do anything other than look after itself.

The equation is a simple one.

If One can consistently rate on Saturday night such that it would sneak into the Top 20 of the primary channels (and it's possible that it can do it), then the A-League's future on commercial FTA is assured (for as long as FTA hangs around).

If it can't, it goes the way of a multitude of shows that disappear off our screens on a regular basis.

This is how the bottom reaches of the top 20 of the primary channels looked like last night, and as you can see, it's actually not a big ask to sneak into that top 20.  But if it can't do it, then that's the end of that.

@ pippinu

That's an interesting post. I don't think anyone knows where football will rate next season with a wide discrepancy in estimates from the pessimistic saying they'll be at SBS levels and the optimistic north of 200k.

But the figures you posted sets a good target over the coming 2 years, can Football nudge 300k and force itself on to the primary channel? Assuming Fox hold their usual 80-100k (given it's the same coverage why would a Fox customer switch to Ten?) it's going to be a big ask unless the clubs get their product marketing right, which is a combination of grass roots engagement and stars to attract eurosnobs and the casual viewer. The ffa have an awful track record in this area managing to even piss off their own core supporters on several occasions lol so I'm not holding much hope

I guess I'm suggesting that 150k to 200k is enough to guarantee its place on One (even if no dollars flow from that directly), and that to nudge 250k (on a consistent basis  would be enough to consider putting it on the main channel.

It's a bit speculative, but it's something to work with.  Common sense tells us that if Ten can get 250+k on its primary channel showing some old rubbish which costs it nothing to purchase, then there is no way on Earth that they would pay the FFA a single cent to put an A-League game on its primary channel merely to get ratings closer to 200k - so consistently getting 250k at least gets the execs paying attention.  But it has to be consistent, it just can't be for the occasional derby.  That's' not enough on its own to pull in some bucks.

This is why it's quite difficult, Ten can get decent ratings for old shows which cost them nothing - to extract money out of them, you have to do better than the shows which cost nothing.

If we put aside what the end figures will look like , cross promotion on TENS top rating programme ie. news,  the project will be as good as a 30 second ad paid for  by FFA. I am confident that for the first time games on FTA will regularly rate better than on Foxsports. If we can achieve this in the first season then we are on the way to better things.
