@ bitza
Tend to agree. It sounds like an excuse that poor promotion by 9 might result in lower viewing figures and that football fans should really just know it's on tonight; but 9 are just carrying it and not even promoting it on their sports section/Facebook which is just bizarre - there's at least a million people out there who care about football (7 million if you believe the ffa) why wouldn't you try and alert them to the game??
Average weekend ratings for the AFL a couple of weeks back were 540,000/game which is excellent, if football gets half of that with no promotion, burried on a secondary channel and being the junior code it will be a bargain for 9 - and just maybe they'll wonder what they could have got if they actually promoted it??

As I posted yesterday, there was not one post on any of their Facebook pages promoting the match. I have seen one today though. Obviously they have no interest in the match. As noted, the Thursday NRL match rates around 400k. They obviously believe a hyped up, promoted crucial Socceroos world cup qualifier would not rate more than around 400k on their main channel. I disagree. Tonight's match promoted right could have and should have been a huge ratings winner for 9.

But if it just going top take away viewers from the league game which their advertisers pay more to be promoted during than the socceroos game why would they advertise the hell out of it. Robbing Peter to pay Paul. Paul is also worth less money to you and you have invested heavily in Peter while Paul is going to run off and play somewhere else in a few months.

Both good responses. It surely just emphasises the importance of getting the right broadcast partner. In this case you have to wonder why 9 bothered but let's hope TEN is better, much better.

It's a crucial world cup qualifier, of course there will be interest. From last Thurs night, this is what we need to beat to get into the top 20. I think it's achievable: 10 | HEY DUGGEE-PM | ABC2 | 173,000 | 11 | BEN AND HOLLY’S LITTLE KINGDOM-EV | ABC2 | 172,000 | 12 | PEPPA PIG-PM | ABC2 | 172,000 | 13 | CHARLIE AND LOLA-PM | ABC2 | 163,000 | 14 | FLOOGALS-PM | ABC2 | 161,000 | 15 | THE NUMTUMS-PM | ABC2 | 152,000 | 16 | PEPPA PIG-AM | ABC2 | 147,000 | 17 | FIREMAN SAM-PM | ABC2 | 143,000 | 18 | TREE FU TOM-PM | ABC2 | 142,000 | 19 | SARAH & DUCK-AM | ABC2 | 140,000 | 20 | SPICKS AND SPECKS-EV | ABC2 | 139,000 |

So decent results then, Pepper Pig has been bested in a rare win for Gallop lol. A couple of questions remain:
- 54,000 people watched in Adelaide so clearly plenty of interest, what could the ffa have done differently to get another 10,000 through the gate?
- 262,000 watched on Go despite minimal promotion. How many would have tuned in with some decent promotion?

Unless I'm reading it wrong, it looks like on fta the Socceroos beat afl in Brisbane and got more than double the swans figures in Sydney. Not bad considering there was hardly any promo from 9.

This could just be because I hadn't ever watched GEM's coverage of football, but I was pleasantly surprised by their pre-game panel last night. Actually insightful football discussions with good panelists, looking forward to seeing how they go with the next few games coming up. Then again, maybe ABC2 just lowered my standard for FTA coverage so much that anything impresses me.

I think what this does is definitively prove that there is about 285k interested in the Australian game. We saw this with the grand final (90 minutes). We have seen this with past Socceroos games. This is just the reality of our code and it will take rare exceptions to beat this Socceroos vs Uruguay. Manchester United or Beckham. Liverpool's first game here. World cup games I suspect Arsenal's first game here might do well. Also the first FTA Sydney derby will do well given we managed 188k on payTV. That aside we really need to accept our ratings. We know the AFL and NRL are more popular and that's exactly what the ratings show It also spells an end to the myth about promotion. There was little to no promotion on 9 for this game yet it managed to get ratings that would have seen it in the top 10 in pretty much every night of the week, every day of the year. How the fuck can a game that nobody knows about rate over 280k. How can it be a coincidence that the same number of people who watched 90 minutes of the A League grand final just happened to be flicking through Gem and saw this game? As I have said maybe twice, professional elite sport has social and cultural interest. The knowledge and interest in this game was established long before it was announced who was even going to show this game In the past few years we have been on SBS1, SBS2, ABC, ABC2, 7, 7mate, 9, Gem and now Go. Every single channel is dishing out the same results based on event and match importance that falls within a range we can expect The only thing left to see is whether Channel 10 and OneHD are the key to unlocking this inevitable bored Aussie flicking through three channels phenomena, or whether advertising cant change people's perception on the Australian part of football And we will know once and for all this year

More people in Adelaide watched the Socceroos Thursday (in Adelaide) and the Crows Friday (in Adelaide) More people in Melbourne watched the Dogs Thursday and Brazil Friday (in Melbourne) We have seen time and time again that the host city has a larger than normal attendance. Not surprising that an event of social significance for a region would have more people tuning in to watch

The Perth figures are quite atrocious really, all the other states seem to be making massive progress and have a consistent solid viewer base but Perth is still 600-900% behind the AFL in ratings and there isn't even a WA team playing

Totally identical... no promotion of the Football match, almost no popular lead discussion by the media... negative story found after the game as the main discussion point... So if we assume 10 can make a difference in the promotional side of things we should see a change.... The change does not have to be dramatic to have an effect...

So if we assume 10 can make a difference in the promotional side of things we should see a change.... The change does not have to be dramatic to have an effect... The change we saw was sports fans making a choice in which sport to watch based on established interest and local events What you are suggesting is promotion will determine whether AFL fans watch their team play or whether they watch the football instead You are also suggesting that the promotion on 10 is worth more than the promotion on 7 A change in ratings generally means a drop in ratings for one show to see an increase in another. The figures don't work in isolation, and this is a perfect example of that If you think macro you might be able to see why more promotion on 9 wouldn't have made a difference

Promotion and positive media will add to audience, where this comes from I don't know now. But to assume promotion and positive media will have none or little effect on ratings ..... runs against all available evidence .. no one is suggesting a take over or a mega increase.. but there will be an effect. My guess is somewhere between 5 to 12% ...

+xThe promotion did make a difference on channel 9 though in Melbourne, 36K improvement is significant. What about the 37k improvement in the Adelaide market for the Socceroos game? Secondary channel and no promotion, yet a 37k improvement on the other AFL game The Melbourne game had 36k extra viewers in Melbourne The Adelaide game had 37k extra viewers in Adelaide One was on a main channel, the other was not. The AFL didn't change channels. How can the exact same result be due to two different things?
