I don't think we will get a result but I think we will at least score one goal.

It's possible to get a result without scoring a goal.

What we can say is that there is a degree of experimentation with this German team, but in fairness, they are all quality players, it's a matter of whether they have become a quality team.

I reckon something like 3-2 Germany

That would be a very good result because it keeps us alive for the knockouts

I'm really ambivalent about this one. On one hand, the 3ATB doesn't seem to have come together in time but on the other hand we were looking quite shaky heading into the Asian Cup too. I'm not saying we're going to win the confeds by any means, but Ange seems singularly focused on tournaments rather than the matches in between so maybe he'll pull off some good results.

I understand Luongo not in Asian cup form, but how does anyone put Irvine ahead of him is beyond me.

Another good point from one of the more respected posters on the Roar:

Simply compare the leagues the players from the two starting 11s play in.

And why on earth should the back 3 suddenly “gel” against this calibre of opponents when it can’t against second rate Asian opposition?

I’m still picking 4-0 to Germany. I hope to wrong.

In light of the Socceroos ranking slide into appalling mediocrity & not to mention the constant failure after failure of Australia's youth teams at all levels I think it's important to clarify why the game of football is played.

It's not for the results, at all.

It's important to build upon a base of technical considerations using world's best practise from various confederations & curriculums & from this to play a certain way. Now what this way actually it's not really important nor it is important to use this knowledge to actually defeat anyone in a game of football nor to win anything, not to win any games, not to win any trophies & not to feel any sort of acheivement either professionally or personally.

The vague return on investment for the untold millions & millions of dollars spent on the governing body, the coaches, the players, the facilities, the back room staff, the general expenses on tournaments & of course the expensive overseas technical directors & their mates & the famous powerpoint curriculums is that the players are better "technically" in some ethereal sort of way.

So no need to worry that Australian football is getting worse & worse compared to overseas because in the end results don't matter. At all.

Thank you for not questioning anything at all, especially when you all have a vested interest in the status quo.

So tonight when watching the game & the other two against Chile & Cameroon no need to worry about what the score because that sort of measurement of development is really not required especially in Strayan football where boys of thirteen are now being told not to keep score in their junior development.  You can see how the baffling practice of keeping score of goals in world football shouldn't really apply to Australian football because their is now no such thing as victory or defeat or failure in football & in many ways in society as large.

Bring it on, 6-0. 7-0. 8-0, no one is going to be held accountable, either at governing body level, or at coaching level, or at player level.

It's all about the money, that's it & removing the KPI's means the money can keep rolling in.

Jesus mate, lighten up. Even if football goes tits up in this country life will continue, I agree that things should change if we don't perform well but acting like it will be the end of the world if we don't, doesn't exactly make a person a very happy human being.

I haaaaate this line of thinking! This preoccupation with league! I hate hate hate this. Richard Garcia i always use as the example. PLayed many premier league games despite being a spud. Not fit to lace Alex brosque or Nicky Carle's boots. Dylan McGowan for instance, just coz he's now at portugal doesnt make him a better player. Same with Mooy. He was the same player before he got promoted with hudders. A good player is a good player doesn't matter the league

I enjoy reading a wide range of sports forums, in multiple languages (I can read and understand up to about a dozen lanaguages), and if I find a quality comment, I like to share.

I'm not passing the comment off as my own, I said upfront that it was from a poster who regularly puts up good posts on the roar.

Its instantly a better team than against the saudis though, with behinch and milligan in for smith and jedinak (both awful)

Personally I think we have every right to be optimistic, we did win our last tournament!

I don't think people should take any stock from the friendlies, they're meaningless. The qualifiers yes, have been really bad, but I think against the better opposition we will perform much better.

Or we could get smashed 4-0, wtf knows.

Dont get me wrong though league is certainly still relevant to evaluating players in fact very important but put it this way there's a big big difference with just playing in a league and actually dominating it. Much rather pick a guy who is dominating the a league for instance than a guy playing average in Bundi 2. Performance in the context of the level of the league is what is important. That's why Aus Football fan shits me when he continually compares the leagues of our current players with older players and says Mooy is unproven - HTF is he unproven when he dominates his current league, his past league and international football. The guy is a gun you just need to watch him.

IMO its not whether or not we have players actually playing in top leagues its whether or not we PRODUCE players good enough to play in them. And i believe that many of the current bunch are good enough to play there despite not being there currently. Sains, Milligan, Spira and troisi all good enough to be playing top 5 leagues or CL clubs albeit for spira and troisi maybe bottom of table la liga, EPL and Bundi and mid table serie a and French league.  Those 4 are just as good as the golden gen albeit they weren't 'forced' to stick it out in europe before they made it - the current level of the a league (and CSL) is far greater than that of the old NSL which ppl aren't factoring in when evaluating our current squad against our old ones.
