+xWhat a joke, if we are signing Marquees i should have at least heard of the guy before. Throwback signing to the early days of the HAL If you know anything about Italian football you should have definitely heard of this player. My guess is that you are probably just an EPL fan boy so will be a lil tricky to find marquees that fit the bill of who you've heard of. In saying all of that, Maccarone is too old. Back even 4-5 years ago he was actually a very solid player. Never broke through into a top club but was a consistent goal scorer for mid to lower tier clubs. But was well known because he always managed to get himself on the golden boot tally top 10 in Serie A and Serie B quite regularly. He's one of those players that's been around forever.

+xAnd at this point we should point out that Diamanti is not a guest marquee. FFA right there. 38 year old former Italian international out of the NT for 15 years after a career of 2 internationals, signed for 2 years is a marquee. 33 year old former Italian international out of the NT for 3 years after a 17 game international career, signed for one year, not a marquee. Sign the poorer player for a longer period to be a marquee. Gotta love those criteria from the bureaucrats. Only difference there is that in one case the FFA had a say whereas the other they didn't. It's not as if he's going to Brisbane as a guest marquee., in which case would make your statement much more accurate and relevant.

+xI don't know what playing style Aloisi has in mind ,but longballs will be of little use without some pace and energy up front.Maybe we are going to play like SFC. You're going to play a intense pressing game with a 38 year old No. 9?

Signings like this doesn't help Queenslands cause when it comes to wanting to host Socceroos games. Maybe if Brisbane can start treating the A-League with respect by fielding a team of players that aren't approaching retirement then the FFA could reward them with an Internstional friendly.
Sick of Queensland football treating our game with contempt.

Still played Serie A last season

Signing for "Marquee" wages is basically slang for he's on more than we could afford inside the salary cap. The same way Gui Finkler is considered Wellington's "marquee".
Can't say i watch much Serie A so ill hold judgement on this one. I had heard of him during his time at Middesborough. What type of striker is he normally?

Hmm not sure about this signing. Yeah he's been playing Serie A football the past few seasons, and most of the games, however he's not a big scorer. 5 from 28 last season and 13 from 37 doesn't really make him a prolific scorer, however it is at a much higher standard. In saying that the past few years have probably been the best of his career on paper. From highlight reels he looks pretty fit and quick, especially for a guy that old. Looks like a pretty versatile player up front, touch and technicality look far better than any of the players i can think of from the Roar. Might work out to be an awesome signing, but something doesn't seem right about it.

A grella special by the sounds of it.
Could be disastrous or great signing. Really it's the age that is the problem.

"touch and technicality look far better than any of the players i can think of from the Roar" - not just BRFC but of ANY player at ANY club in the HAL. But he's not teh first to arrive with this pedigree and others have failed. so judgment will come by Christmas and not before. Might buy a ticket to Perry Park to see him in the cup if he's playing

Read the posts you're responding to. You don't seem to understand the difference between the extra "timmy" Marquee and the others. This guy isn't a Tim #Vision marquee. He's a run of the mill, everyday, backyard, sweaty, old, really old, expensive shirt wearer. He's hardly a marquee at all. This is the most underwhelming announcement since Adelaide announced they were signing some criminal from Florida.

I doubt he will put bums on seats but he might help them win a few games.
But at 38 I have my doubts on that too.

+xI don't get this. 7 goals from 29 in all comps last season and Brisbane are willing to fork out marquee money on him. He was good a long...long time ago. Excuse me ? So you think a player who scored 7 goals in the Serie A last season isn't worth an A-League marquee ? Holman only scored 5 goals in the A-League last season.....and he is a marquee ! Maccarone has scored 29 goals in 98 games over the past 4 seasons in a struggling Serie A side.....and that is not enough for you ? Name me one other marquee ever who has done that for the dollars he will be getting (and I can assure you it won't be the $2mill a season ADP got). Firstly we don't know how much he is accepting but I am guessing it will be well below a million a season. Secondly ..if he had been scoring more than a goal every 3 games he would not be leaving Europe. We are in European terms.... a tin pot little ,nothing league on the other side of the world. No one who is scoring in Europe is coming here unless very big money is involved. Its time some of you on here had a little dose of reality. No one young ....and scoring In Europe is coming here....ever ! So the Roar have got a player who played in the Serie A last season and scored and assisted in goals ..and... knowing the Roar... for reasonable dollars. Sounds like a bargain to me.

It's pretty sad that the best Roar can do is find a 38year old as their striker. It's a high risk strategy in Brisbane during summer and with a potential ACL campaign and seven over 30,not really a good plan. But I guess recruitment is not that easy. Some coaches are better than others at finding good players.Ange finding Broich and Berisha, would probably be the best recruitment so far.

Not at 38 it is not. the 29 goals over 4 seasons shows the decline. Brisbane need someone to lead the line who is going to score 15 or more in summer, mostly in Brisbane's humidity. Instead they pay marquee for a declining old man. Like I said, I always thought he was a good player back in the day but this is not a good move for Brisbane. At least Holman had good name recognition. And 5 goals from 19 appearances from the midfield isn't too bad a return. I am sure he will score a couple and I for one will be happy to go and watch him when Brisbane come to visit, but as Cahill showed at MC, players this age can only give a team so much, and performances tend to be patchy. This is not something a club that wants to win the league can accept.

The guy arrives with a goalscoring record of a goal every 3 games, even over the last 4 seasons he's still scoring a goal every 3.3 games which is hardly a worrying decline, scoring 5 last season for a team that struggled to score all season (the leading scorer had 6).
So his track record is solid and stands comparison to the last Italian to come from Serie A. At 38 he matches Cahill, are we saying he should be thrown out too? And his marquee wages are less than half what WSW paid for someone with an inferior goalscoring record so who's got the better deal, wanderers or Roar?
The truth is, whether a visa player is 28 or 38 we won't know if they're a success or not until they play. It's always the same with visa players and it's going to be interesting to see who ends up with egg on their face ... either way expect this thread to be bumped a few times in the season.
I don't think Aloisi would gamble on this bloke, he's done his homework I bet so let's see. Victory in two weeks will be a good test
