In a review of Olympia who are playing Leichardt APIA tonight, they have about 8 players well suited to central midfield. Out of four  full back and wing positions, they only have one player comfortable  in these positions at state league level, Warren Wadawu.

The other players struggle as full backs and wing, because it is not their preferred position. I don't want to say too much about some of these players because I've coached some of them recently.

They are being used as square pegs to fit round holes as they are suited to central midfield where Olympia has far too much depth. Mearns, Hill, Hickey, Undy, Ortmann, Bellini, Cartwright, and McCarthy would be starters in most other Tasmanian NPL teams in central midfield.

Olympia relies heavily on central striker, Sklenar, to score. This season he has scored 24 goals. However, he is under an injury cloud. If unfit, it will be difficult to replace him.

Leichardt's best chance to score will be exploiting Olympia's lack of quality in wide positions.

I don't expect APIA to be particularly good.  I've only seen three state league NPL teams take the game to HAL teams over the last four or five years in Cup games. The HAL teams  usually have heavy legs from intensive preseason training which assists the NPL teams to be more competitive. This trio are SU58 ( once), Rockdale and Bentleigh Greens. The rest defend deep and try to hit HAL teams on the break.

Tasmanian teams now realise they've overrated NSW and Victorian NPL teams in recent times. They are closer in standard to the top four Tassie NPL teams, and some distance from HAL teams once they are match fit. Nobody can work out why the gap has closed so much.
