So what are my chances of getting wet at the stadium tonight? Seats about halfway up the lower tier

Lower tier has no real rain coverage at all (except up the back behind the goals).

That roof was a great bargain.

If it doesn't rain from the skies tonight, it will still rain with the tears of socceroos supporters after they lose.

Just opened the Sydney Morning Herald and Daily Telegraph on-line and not one mention of the game. Under sport, the SMH has 8 prominent articles, being 3 rugby league, 2 rugby union, 1 cricket, 1 AFL, 1 boxing. A massive day/game for the national football team to qualify for the worlds biggest sporting event....somehow it falls below TWO rugby union articles.

The game has a long way to go in media strategy, but in any event, surely it is an intentional strategy not to promote this game. Why would people in Sydney care more about racism in Collingwood than Australian qualifying for the world cup.

I imagine that there'll be more content later on in the morning. I wonder what garbage the morning TV shows rolled out today though.

The age old image problem. Our country is fascinated by many sports people barely play anywhere else - AFL and Rugby League are two in particular.

Most who don't follow football in Australia think all Asian teams are rubbish and we should beat all of them easily. This is also applicable to many Eurosnobs too.

We desperately need to qualify just to keep our heads above water for the profile of the sport. In just about every one of the 25 countries I've visited or lived in overseas, football is nearly always the number one or number two sport. WCQ makes little difference to the profile of the sport in the majority of countries.

When I travel overseas to just about anywhere else, it reminds me of how out of contact and self-focused we are - heliocentric.

I've heard a lot of theories about why football isn't as big as it could be in Australia, but it being because we orbit the sun is a new one.

I think this unrealistic expectation will make it more difficult to attract good quality coaches

Ange and Pim both did well with the cattle they had at their disposal (if we win tonight we finish with 1.9 points per game which is probably above par for the team we have on paper. This is true regardless of whether we finish 1st or 2nd)
yet both are/were hounded by fans. After Pim we got Holger and I wonder how much of it had to do with the fact that the perception would be that there is no reward for adding value to the team (he was also good bringing in young players when our youth were particularly poor) and anyone decent and competent ran from the aussie job. Not having strong youth coming through was a problem too

After yesterdays 'gamespersonship' anything's possible.

I think he meant 'geocentrism' as a tortured analogy of how he thinks we think the world revolves around Australia.

Shouldn't according to you our best ever squad be able to qualify for the world cup in Asia, or is that too much of a stretch for a team apparently better than the golden generation?

Well yes.  Tactically they're streets ahead because something about the milieu and world powerhouses.

Can't play a one-two or stop the ball dead but that's a whole other discussion.

I'm not gonna get into the golden generation debate. But people have to realise yes they had a good World Cup in 2006 but they had some very poor results as well. Il back Ange on what he said. After the World Cup they did sweet fuck all.

the GG did the best in the 06 wc, did awful in the asian cup, awful in the 1st round of qualifiers and were a bit better in the 2nd round of quals
If this generation qualify for russia and get 4 points in the group stage I'm prepared to say they are the best ever despite being significantly weaker on paper

but that would take an impressive performance

yes footballs a tricky sport and 4 points would be amazing. I suspect the australian press as well as most fans would see it as par at best because they don't realize how difficult it is to climb the ladder in this sport
