Spot on WSF. I think most here should stop comparing the GG time with current. Just can't compare - can't we just leave it that the GG done great for its time, its getting pretty petty they didn't win an Asian Cup and visa versa. Seriously, we got to move ahead. We got what we have now and thats it ! Forget this chicken before the egg re Group points you have got to be kidding. Lets just pray support our team tonight that they deliver the goals - then its in the saudis hands. First things first fellas.

+x+x+xGalzorblade completely aggree. GG had way better team on player. But if this team does get out of group stage it would be a massive achievement I wonder how many will see it that way We haven't even made the world cup yet and some are talking about 4 points, making it out of the group stage and being the best team we have ever seen, fmd. How many points did we get last world cup? But it's not about points, it's about the good old true blue spirit of giving it a good old crack. Head down and go in swinging, if we get done 10 nil who cares we stuck to our guns and our 2-2-4-4 formation that our great gaffa invented before he split to coach in Greece arm in arm with Brad Smith.

+x+xI was watching an EPL show where they were talking about stoke city manager mark Hughes using the same formation as ange is and using the complete wrong players in the complete wrong positions, and with a team that didn't suit the formation, but he kept persisting with it, because it is the style at the moment and big teams like Chelsea use it etc.. Very similar to what's happening with the roos and our old mate grumpy ange. Kinda like when Spain /barcelona had success with tiki taka. Every fuckin man and his dog tried to re create it. When I started my coaching in Azerbaijan we had a team with a 6'4 tall peter crouch style striker, our head coach was adamant that we could be Barcelona, but the point is certain styles don't work with certain teams. This team for.example didn't suit tiki taka, and tell you what after 5 games we changed, ange has had enough time to change after realising it doesn't work, but he hasn't. The diffence between good managers and bad managers, is their ability to change tactics if you're getting out played, its not working etc and admitting when they picked the wrong player and changing it. Remember 2005, 0-0 in a must win after 37? Minutes and very little flair going forward Guys Hiddink takes off Tony Popovic and brings on Harry Kewell and reaped the rewards... Now imagine if ange had the balls to admit he fuxked up? Tell you what, the Japan game coukdve been very different if we come out at half time, changed our formation, put Timmy on, took Smith off and ange admitted he fucked up, but instead he stood there, arms folded and grumbled to the press post match. Today's game day, I hope ange can put his ego aside and show some balls for once. For the sake of the fans. I remember around 9 months ago this whole forum was going nuts for Ange to try a back 3. When he did against Iraq we were all so happy until we saw the results. If you have the players who can, by all means. We don't really. In the Bundesliga, Frankfurt, Schalke and more have employed this brilliantly. It's scary to watch as the opposing side. Smith came off injured against Saudi but I can't recall any time he's made a sub due to lack of performance. Franjic in the cup final was hurt and carded I believe? The same case was against Chile. I had so much hope for Ange after he changed things around with different phases. I suppose each phase had some success and he wants to be able to say the back 3 works and then he'll weirdly move to something else. I love Ange but is this some massive egoistic issue? I'm really puzzled on how we need to move ahead with all of this. I don't think it's the formation, per se, that's the problem. It's simply because Ange insists on them having lots of possession. If we don't have the speed, the skill or the movement, it leads to us only being able to do so much. Rogic just had nobody to lay the ball off to when he was in an advanced position. Mooy hasn't got much in the way of options. This hasn't too much to do with the formation but everything to do with other dynamics. We had exactly this issue when we played 4-3-3. When we played 4-3-3 with aggressive wingbacks, it was even worse than what we have now. It resulted in there being two central defenders, on their own, defending the width of the pitch. That's worse than having three central defenders doing that. With Ange's 4-3-3 with aggressive wingbacks, the reality is we have never conceded less than 2 goals in a match against a top opponent. Usually 3 goals. So, basically, that won't work either. We can have a back four. But it needs to be a flat back four. They're not good enough to get back and the central defenders aren't mobile enough to manage with two central defenders and two wingbacks. Either three central defenders and wingbacks or a flat back four. That's the trade-off. But Ange insists on relentless attack and we don't have heaps of meaningful possession. Maybe if we have Gersbach on the left and Leckie on the right, it might be a bit better.

Maybe if we have Gersbach on the left and Leckie on the right, it might be a bit better. You keep mentioning how the fullbacks even in a system in which they overlap are the same as wingbacks but they just aren't, they are not always so far up the pitch that they can't get back, it might happen a couple times in the entire match where they are actually incapable of getting back. Wingbacks are on average a good 10 metres further than a fullback and if you play with no wingers or with wingers cutting in then these wingbacks will constantly be the players furthest up the pitch and they have no hope of getting back. It is also well known that 3 at the back also requires the defenders to be incredibly athletic, far more than a 4 at the back and it is no surprise that our defence is the worst it has ever been. It is a complex system and midfielders are being dragged out of position to cover our wingbacks and teams are smartly attacking the wings because it literally destroys the entire structure of our team with midfielder and defenders being dragged out of position and the space it leaves is heartbreaking to see.

I just find it so funny talking about 3 at the back and that our coach persists with it. I've read recently even the Gooners have struggled going to this formation and despite their current woes of late their backline sure is better than our NT in the big picture so wtf does he persist on starting up as this astounds me. We are a team that can sufficiently do the job with a back 4. Thats our basic's covered importantly due to our lack of mobility/fitness and importantly lack of close fast ball skills, one touch football ability we don't have whatsoever across the park, thats what 3 at the back has to do in circumstances when under the pump, Japan game proved it no. Man, you got to work to your limitations. Play 4 4 2 - we can handle that, safer - thats our ability at this stage imo.

Today we play 3 at the back when we don't have a quality back 3.

Were feckin aussies, were not bad but we ain't that good ! I just want to see us putting in, attempts on goal in double digit numbers and it is what it is. I watched the Dutch Bulgaria WC group game the other day - even though they won 3-1 and with 67% possession they looked so beatable, Bulgaria had their moments with much less chances ofcourse and to date have from 6games 3 wins to Dutch 2 pecking at their heels.

Got an early class then straight out the door and home to watch. Hopefully we can rest easy afterwards with Saudi needing at least a 3 goal margin. Please get it done.
