+x+x+xWhy Rukavytsya and why Birighitti? They would be the first to be dropped when the final 23 is decided. Birighitti has just started playing and will soon have a run of matches under his belt so that selection imo is justified. Ruka may well work in this system if ange had any intention of actually breaking at speed in wide areas but as we all know we are currently holding possession for possessions sake and stagnating any opportunities we create to burst forward and counter. We also seem to be heavy with left sided players in this squad, ruka, smith, gersbach, behich, goodwin who i assume will all be vying for the same position. Interesting that spira has been dropped all together. I cant help but think he and ange may have had a difference of opinion. Its just a fan theory but im running with it. I think it might also have o do with the fact he plays in a the Chinese Leagues second division. Very possible that is the very point of difference between the two

+x+xThere are 6 wingers in the squad, Kruse, Leckie, Troisi, Mabil, Goodwin and Rukavytsya, plus 4 fullbacks, Gersbach, Smith, Behich and Risdon. That is a third of the squad to cover two wide positions. Even considering Troisi might be being picked at a central player only it is hard to believe 9 players have been picked to cover 2 starting positions. In Israel Ruka appears to play almost as often as a striker as he plays RW. He seems to be playing number nine from this brief highlight of his goal on the weekend:

Spira plays his best football in a back four and was formidable with Salisbury with that system now to not even pick him while others are not even playing regularly and been found out is baffling.I agree there is something wrong between him and Ange.
If Goodwin isn't selected this time it's laughable.Ange has been chopping and changed way to much.Aziz is now back in squad why wasn't here there last 2 games playing regularly week in week out nothing new for Ange to know.

This is the fun time when optimism is high...so many options in the 30 man squad, so many possibilities! Then the high fades when Ange cuts promising youngsters and then we reach an all new low when the starting 11 is announced and we get outplayed.

+xI have never understood the love for Risdon . Makes way too many mistakes at A League level He's very comfortable on the ball (Glory pretty much used him nearly every time to start attacks for the last two seasons). I think he had a pretty average season last year ... didn't look like he wanted to be at Glory anymore for some reason. I am hoping at WSW he can step up a gear. He's a pretty good one on one defender, however does struggle to get back and defend if he pushes high (which depending on Ange's system that he uses and where he deploys Risdon could be a problem).

It seems he started on the LW for 62 minutes and then the starting striker was subbed off for a left winger and he went up front and scored the goal.

Behich plays too often. Ange prefers players that are fresh and well rested for international football.

By now, American Samoa must have realised that Australias 22-0 win over Tonga two days earlier was no fluke.

Spira and only Salisbury can play out from the back the other defenders can't ,so it's puzzling he got dropped from the squad.

Behich should be selected ahead of Smith, but Gersbach, Goodwin, Dougall and Meredith should be ahead of both of them.

Requiescat in pace!

Hasn't played a competitive match for eight years? Ange is interested.
Why does Langerak still get picked? Almost 30 but still hasn't cracked 100 career games, went from the bench in Germany to the bench in Spain, for a club that is likely to be relegated.

Why not 4-2-3-1 with a flat back four?

+x3-4-3 4-3-3 -----------------Ryan------------------- -----------------------Ryan------------------- Degs---------Sains-----------Wright----- Degs-------Sains---------Wright-----Gersbach---- ---------Mooy-----------Jedinak------------ ---------------------Jedinak--------------------- Leckie-------Troisi---------Mooy-----Gersbach ----------------Mooy-------------Rogic----------- --------------------Juric-------------------------- --Leckie---------------Juric-------------Goodwin--- Options. As regards, the formation on the left, I'm guessing you're talking about Aaron Mooy at CDM only and not in two places at once ;) The formation/line-up on the left is a go, I reckon. Although I'm yet to witness enough from Maty Ryan to suggest he has the shot-stopping ability. So Mitch Langerak should be in goals. Unless Brad Jones has no plan on representing the NT, he should be there in place of both, anyway. Then in midfield guess Tom Rogic off the bench for CAM? There's the Tim Cahill option, too. Can we get Mark Milligan in that starting line-up too? Tough call him or Jedinak. I don't reckon the personnel work for the formation on the right, though. Mile Jedinak simply isn't technically good enough to be the sole CDM. If he plays there on his own it will only slow our transitions down substantially more. Mooy and Rogic don't complement each other well at all. There just won't be enough speed and movement in central midfield. If Mat Leckie doesn't have a good day, we're going to be in real trouble breaking down Syria's midfield. It just creates a situation where we have lots of bodies in front of the ball, lots of sideways passing. If Ange has both the fullbacks pushing forward, this will result in Australia getting annihilated on the counter-attack. Syria can just sit back and wait until Australia cough up the ball and then counter-attack quickly. With just Jedinak in holding midfield, it would leave Bailey Wright and Trent Sainsbury isolated. They simply tend not to be mobile enough to cover that width on their own. If Ange goes with that formation, we have low reward (as we struggle to score in those circumstances) and high risk (as we're defensively weakened). And even if it does work against Syria and if it works against the North or Central American opponent, it is doomed to fail against any really decent side at the World Cup. We've never conceded fewer than two goals (usually three) against world-class opponents with that system. Better to use the Confederations Cup match against Chile as a blue print. Or to think about 4-2-3-1 but with a virtually flat back four.

I am starting to think that if the team is going to go to 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 then the wingers should be Leckie and Kruse, they can swap through the game, unless Leckie is going to play RB. I was happy for Leckie to be RB despite his inexperience in the position but he was done for the first goal against Japan, he should not have let the player come back inside to deliver the cross. However if not Leckie who is there? There is not an attacking right back available with the required quality, it simply does not exist, Grant, Risdon, Karacic are not good enough. There might be a defensive option, more than one, Wright apparently played well as a more defensive RB for Bristol City. However that goes against everything Ange wants to do.
It seems the team plays better when Cahill starts, even against Thailand the play was better in a lot of ways than other times. But how does Cahill fit into a team where Juric is the preferred striker for good reasons and there are many other midfield options?

Ruka hey?! I don't understand Ange.... he has staked this squad with left sided attacking players.... but why! We already have Rogic and troisi as his understudy. I understand gesbach smith and behich are vying for the same spot and then Goodwin in the mix. But what we are really after is a left centre back... so Jurman comes in... he should be looking more into this.. bring in Davidson Williams and co. If he is looking for more attacking players surely it's on the right side???? Very thin in this position and don't mention if leckie goes down who fills his spot!!!!!

+x+xAnother backline with potentially Smith, Degenek and Wright in it... fark me dead.. surely Chapman was a chance then incheon are coming 3rd last in the k league but chapman has played 20 games and scored 2 goals in a league that is similar quality to a euro 2nd teir league wright though is in form at the moment his team are in contention for promotion and he is getting 83% passing in the ecl of all places I get that and yes Baileys having a great start, but when the ball is at his feet and his running with it... it sends shivers down my spine...
