  • Ernie Merrick has also coached Melbourne Victory and Wellington Phoenix (Getty Images)
Ernie Merrick is refusing to treat Saturday night's blockbuster A-League clash with Sydney FC as a measure of Newcastle's title credentials.

But he says the Jets have already passed one major test: playing "really poor football" but still winning.

It's the mark of any championship team, and one Newcastle displayed on Saturday as they came from behind to beat Adelaide United 2-1 at Coopers Stadium.

The result put them on top of the A-League ladder but the performance didn't please Merrick one bit.

Five things we learned from A-League Round 6
Shock results, maiden wins and a disappointing coaching debut headlined this past weekend’s Remembrance Round of A-League action.

"There's definitely positives to take out of the game because we've now got a team that are very resilient and can go a goal down and not just draw but get a win," he said on Tuesday.

"(But) if we keep performing like that we're not going to win many games."

Merrick said the Sky Blues were at a "different level altogether" compared to Adelaide.

He described their shock loss to Central Coast last week as proof the A-League's quality chasm was closing.

"There's no doubt that teams are all improving. The lower teams have recruited well, they're coached well," Merrick said.

"There's a closing of the gap occurring. But it's very hard to go through a whole season and not concede any games. Everyone's going to lose games, ourselves included.

"It's a case of bouncing back and there's no doubt Sydney will want to bounce back this weekend against us."

Fired up Mariners stun Sydney FC
Sydney FC reject Andrew Hoole and his Central Coast minnows have denied former coach Graham Arnold his 100th A-League win in a major upset over the reigning champions.

However, Merrick quickly hosed down suggestions a win over Sydney would prove the Jets were the real deal.

"I try not to place that much emphasis on one game," he said.

"It all comes down to consistency over a period of time and to be fair to the boys, we've had a bad game.

"We've still won the game, showing our strength of character. And we have to take that as a lesson to be learned."

The Jets are one of only two unbeaten sides in the A-League - the other is Western Sydney, who have won only one match and drawn five others.

Meanwhile, Merrick said he won't look at strengthening his squad, or replacing injured marquee star Ronald Vargas, until the January transfer window opens.

"Some overseas clubs will want to offload players that are not getting a game - some of them are very good players, and we'll keep an eye on that January window," he said.

Does seem shit you will never host a GF if you get  that chance.

The Waratahs have two home fixtures with venues still down as TBC - the Reds on 21 April and the Blues on 5 May. The first is a scheduling clash with Sydney FC and the second is due to the FFA booking Allianz Stadium for the entire weekend in the event Sydney, Central Coast or Newcastle need the venue for the A-League Grand Final.

http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/sport/rugby/waratahs-delighted-with-simpler-super-rugby-draw-but-aleague-scheduling-problems-remain/news-story/095b3fe95ff9a6341d09d2bba8bfef19

Would lol though if you hosted SFC at Allianz in a home final. #ffastuff

My mate and I were planning to go to the game as our first away trip but unfortunately his wife had to be rude and go and get pregnant :P

But yeah, Jets looks like a great away trip - really keen to do it.

Went to newy for MV game. Really enjoyed it and not what I was expecting.

Went there as well tsf and was really impressed with the stadium and the city & region itself was fantastic.

Personally i think Hunter Stadium is up to standard to host a grand final & more lower drawing Socceroos friendlies & early stage qualifiers.
The money makers at FFA HQ might disagree but thought the whole match day experience functioned well; easy to purchase tickets, minimal queues & lines and pretty respectful locals.
Will keep my eyes out for next seasons fixture and try and do it again.

Was also funny reading the Newcastle Herald on Monday and seeing four of the back pages inc the back page being dedicated to the game and league.
Most cities in the league are relegated to a one page spread right at the back of the sport section.

The city is really on the grow. When the light rail and Wickham precinct get completed it really will be a good-sized, quality city (not to mention the most underrated beaches in Australia). If MV play us up here in the finals a quality forum piss-up will be in order

We just need the final stage of upgrades to happen on the stadium to remove the hills and become and all seater. Some like the grass areas but I am not in that boat at all.

The Knights just got a $10M grant from the government to build a "centre of excellent" at the stadium grounds (with their owners Wests chucking in another $10M) which hopefully can help this happen. Just look at the artists impression . (This was from before the COE was a thing but you get the idea)

Personally there is no need for the hills to be removed or for any further upgrades for the next 10-20 years.
Perhaps if the Knights were selling out the stadium week in, week out it could be justified but i just can't see the need for it.

Imo the hill adds great character to the ground and it probably helps families keep their kids occupied by freely moving around when they get bored.

Yeah. The beach baths were awesome. Good bars on the water/Harbour and very clean city. People were very nice. On reputation I was expecting a shithole

Lots of nice buildings and big old converted ones..

Stadium was good, game sucked but whatever.

Nooooo the hills are the best part. There are 26,000 plastic seats for anyone who wants to sit on them, more than enough. Just look at any Jets crowd, there is a decent portion of fans who choose to sit on the hill over the grandstand - why take that away? It would totally ruin the grounds atmosphere/feel.

They could do some basic work to make the ground a little nicer, like getting rid of the old corporate boxes behind the hills and maybe getting a better big screen (it is tiny).
