New York City, Vancouver, Seattle, Atlanta, dc united and maybe a few others play in huge stadiums but they close off the top tiers, occasionally for the odd blockbuster they open the lot if they're confident of a sell out. Nobody trully believes Yankee stadium only fits 27k lol.

The MLS has proved building stadiums for your crowd potential works well from the table below its easy to see they have reasonably full stadiums...just a couple of points Atlanta & Seattle have played at larger stadiums for some games which adds to their overall % being so high....also the Columbus Crew wants to move to a larger stadium in a better location..

However it does highlight the point Waz was making...

Would love Boutique stadiums as an alternative to Roar, Sydney and the Phoenix. However, it just won't happen. The Phoenix tried building one in Petone but it was scraped. The Roar and Sydney both are in locations that are central and every other option just makes it problematic for the team. If teams had them It would certainly put to bed crowd numbers.

Doesn’t matter how many Empoli fans live outside of Empoli. They play in a 16k capacity stadium and average 10k ... that seems appropriate. That was the point being made, by bringing up Empoli some people have been trying to undermine what Maccarone has said when in fact it reinforces the very point he was trying to make - teams who draw small crowds should play in small stadiums. Where’s the argument with that. We should be more like Empoli.

And Florence has a team of it’s own - but again it’s funny how people say The Gong should have its own team and not be expected to support a new Southern Sydney team but somehow people then think people in Florence should not follow their existing home team and go for Empoli instead.

Again you are comparing the incomparable. Football fandom in Italy is multi-generational. Many Empoli fans likely live outside Empoli in Florence, Livorno etc for work and travel 30-45 minutes to the game. They would support Empoli because they were born there, or their parents/ Grandparents were fans.

Yeah but nah, SydneyFC

Empoli average crowds of almost 10k in a 16k stadium.

He’s just pointing out the bleeding obvious, we’re putting similar crowds into stadiums 2 or 3 times that size.

Many people have said it in the past - we need boutique stadiums.

Shouldn’t be shooting the messenger - and especially not shooting him ignoring the facts behind what he’s saying.

And Florence has a team of it’s own - but again it’s funny how people say The Gong should have its own team and not be expected to support a new Southern Sydney team but somehow people then think people in Florence should not follow their existing home team and go for Empoli instead.

It’s twisted logic - football is established in Italy, it’s not Australia where fans are more “sports fans” than soccer fans and drift between big games in each code. European football culture is one where you follow your team not your neighbours.

@ sydneyfcEmpoli has a population of 48,000 - Gosforth even looks big in comparison. Brisbane has a population of 2 million and Sydney 5 million. All Maccarone has done is say the Emperor has no clothes and Australian football fans are getting bent out of shape 😂

Shouldn't have got me started.

Apples and oranges. Italy lives and breathes football. Empoli were in one of the worlds top leagues last season and I imagine there would be sizeable away support at each home match.

Plus you can't compare population statistics for a 'city' to a wider metropolitan region. Empoli is part of the wider metropolitan area of Florence, which has a population of over 1 million. When people say Sydney has a population over over 5 million that generally includes places like Gosford, Wollongong, sometimes even Newcastle.

@Davide82.

yeah, nah, maybe. I don’t think I’d have paid as much attention to the story though so fair call ...

I think I’m on record as saying Brisbane should be averaging 18k and so too SFC/WSW with their non derby crowds.

Plenty of people have been saying Brisbane play in a stadium that’s too big and get crowds that are too small. After visiting City and Nix away and two home games that’s all Maccarone has said too, so why the attack dogs?

Empoli has a population of 48,000 and averages nearly 10,000 ..... and plays in a 16,000 capacity stadium.

Surely Nix would be better in a 16,000 capacity stadium, and City?? And Roar.

How good did 11.5k look in Perth compared to 11.5k in Brisbane over the weekend?

Is that up to Maccarone's standards?

The funny thing is his last club Empoli had smaller crowds than Brisbane last year (9, 483 average in 16-17), despite being in one of the world's top leagues.

 I'm thinking it won't get much better than that considering how bad Brisbane are playing. Even the fixtures for Victory and Sydney will likely only pull 14-15k max I reckon, depending on whether Brisbane get their shit together.

11,000 was about right. The stadium is full in parts but what is televised is a mixture of people and empty seats. Suncorp awesome location but just too big in Roars current status. I imagine another QLD team could be a reality if it counters playing out of this giant stadium.

I don't know how many times I have said this but people tend to always forget the element of consecutive home games and the effect it has. Sydney has played 3 home games in a row! With the derby being wedged in the middle. So it is extremely unlikely that the same fans are going to 3 home games in a row. Attendance fatigue can set in. It's not as if it's a different set of fans attending all 3 games, the majority would of the fans there are the one's that went the week before, however  proportion say 30-40% will not go to 3 home games in a row. It's just not plausible.

If the 3 latest home games had been spread out over 5-6 week period the crowds would have been boosted. No doubt about it. The next home game is against the Jets in 2 weeks time, which will mean 3 weeks since the last home game. It will get the biggest crowd of the season (bar the derby) by quite some margin.

you had 4 months between home games and got 11k in round 1

Quite a few seasons ago now the stat came out that about 25% of members don't turn up in any given week and that was a League wide average.  I'd be surprised if that isn't still the case.

Sydney said they didn't like the Friday fixtures but everyone has to have them, traditionally not a popular time slot. I have no problem with the crowd figure they just need to play in appropriate stadiums for smaller fixtures. The only time you need Alliance is for Melbourne Victory and the Wanderers. I guess clubs are making decisions that are financially best and I understand this. It is a shame because a lot of the crowd culture is lost on the game and the TV audience. The same could be said for Phoenix and The Roar.

I'm very disappointed at this low figure.

I think CCM are good to watch ATM.

There seem to be few CCM fans who post here anymore.

A large portion of Mariners fans are families with children so 7PM on Sunday night is a horrific time slot for us. Considering Gosford is a commuter town plenty of people would need to get up early the next morning so would be unable to go so late. A few years of poor results and a shackling by Newcastle in the first round wouldn't have helped either. We are capable of good crowds and averaging above 10,000 but a combination of terrible time slots and poor results lead to our small crowd.

In the spirit of the ""Olive Branch""" we can lift the discussion on this site by not attacking and or assuming motives...

This site like many others has lost many good discussions due too IMO two factors, AFL posters who troll often using multi-es to discredit discussion and secondly Football posters who have developed a habit of attacking other posters because they have a different view of the world....

There is a new feature called a Mute mechanism.

Contact the moderator McJules. He will explain how to activate this to block/mute annoying posters, often who troll and target specific people. It is like giving them a red card. You don't see what they post. It is like they disappear from the forum - permanently.
