+x+xAcceleration over the first five metres in football is far more important than who can run the hundred the fastest Agreed. Maybe a bit more than 5m. But definitely much more important than how quick they run the hundred. I think the Gunners published lists of how quick their squad run 30m or 40m. I always thought that was a decent distance for football purposes. There can be decent information gained from that but ideally what you are looking at is how long/ many steps does it take the player to hit their peak sprint speed

I like comparing to/using as a benchmark for wingers a Ryan Giggs, Andrea Kanchelskis etc. 40m from memory is what the NFL use in combine testing for Running Backs/Wide Receivers

Bert getting riled by the journos. He's in the right. He's being asked some of the dumbest fucking questions. One just asked him how he handled the travel in the qualifying rounds.

Bert almost lost it when they said 5 more questions in english. Then they said more questions in dutch. The look on his face was priceless. He's now down to 5 word answers and doesn't give a rats.

Asked point blank about Timmy and he replied it's between him and Tim. Brave journo asked him again. He said it's between him and Tim.
My impression is Cahill's WC is on the line in these friendlies.

Also I think he told Garby to fuck off in Dutch My take was Garby asked him a question and Bert didn't understand it. He then went to one of the Dutchies to help him with the question. Definite grouch detected. But native English speakers need to understand that their lazy grammar constructions really throw ESL speakers off. We're either going to win the world cup or have no manager half way through the group games and a bill to fix the drywall in the rooms

BVM is very measured and astute with his answers. Cutting through the garbage and getting to the 'what IS important'. Australian's are not the only jounro's capable of going one step past stupidity. I always relate this type of straight face with Greg Popovic of the San Antonion Spurs. If a question is stupid, he'll reply with an insult He's got a whole highlight reel on youtube with some of his smarts in press type scenarios. He could do a whole stand up show - halarious. I just think Jounro's just get everything wrong nowadays, always implying stuff that's been passed through the bullshit-mill one too many times. Just baffles me how out of context some of it gets and just stuns the shit out of coaches, how stupid it is.

Amazing defensive depth for the Danes. Kjaer and Jorgensen starting while Christiansen and Vestergaard are obviously being rested and aren't even in the squad. Might be injured?

They use slang phrases that make no literal sense, it absolutely shits me up the wall. I'm not sure how former players who have played overseas can't understand this concept.

I don't know why they persist with interviewing foreign players who are obviously uncomfortable speaking English, especially in an unstructured environment such as a pitchside interview - there are plenty of Australian players who they can ask to tell them that the boys done good and that they'll take it one game at a time.

Think we've heard all the normal, typical run of the mill questions. Travel, Weather -- think the players anf manager are all sick of answering the same shit.

I think he's quite a character in holland.

BVM should really lighten up with the Aussie media. His terseness and occasional grouchiness come off as needlessly rude. And when he's not terse, he just repeats generalities ad nauseum. It's strange that people are defending his demeanor. At best, he seems incredibly dull.

Ange said he didn't care what the media said but it was obvious he did. The detractors got in his head and the selections and formation were ego driven. We almost missed a world cup because of it.

+x Just out of interest, what selections would you say were ego driven? McGowan in that backline. He knew the system was failing and he knew the goals were sailing in on McGowan's side. Couldn't change it without admitting the formation was a flop. Our stocks in defense right now only have some depth with central defenders. Instead he spreads us thin on the left and right where we are the most vulnerable, and at a time we arguably have our worst playing stocks for the last 30 years+.

Yep, I posted at the time how weak we were with central defenders. I think Smith as a constant selection was also ego driven. He has the speed to cover the whole left side, but simply wasn’t playing at club level.
Ange should have stuck with the 433 that won the Asian Cup, despite its limitations.

The Smith selection for mine isn't quite in the same category. I think he genuinely believes in him. He saw it, nobody else did, shit happens. But yes it does confirm the overall point that players were being expected to perform in positions they couldn't. Backing a player is good only as long as it is constructive and helps the player. I think Smith was hurting himself being in that team. What actually turned me on Ange was at that point a journo pushed him on the formation and Ange shot back that it's not a back 3 and we know nothing. No, Ange. He was basically arguing that it's not a back 3 because the team condenses and bolsters the line to become a 5. It wasn't happening. When we were attacking the players were shaping for attack and committing to runs. When we lost the ball in the midfield those players were slaughtered in transition. It just wasn't happening. Not even Usain Bolt wins the 100m if his back is facing the starting block. And we were doing it against Arab teams whose key strength is in counter attacking.

Agree. Too many times someone without speed like Wright or Degenek were caught wide with no help against a lightening winger, with only Sainsbury 30m away.
The persistence in playing Kruse also hurt, who doesn’t have a defensive bone in his body but was expected to track back.
I feel that Ange created a formation to work against the ‘Stans and Bangladesh, but should have reverted to the AC 433 against Japan, Saudi and Iraq.

It's strange that people are defending his demeanor. At best, he seems incredibly dull. It's business not pleasure. I farking hate manager and or player interviews, always suck especially on overhyped / tormented/losing sides -- the worst. Try following Milwaukee Bucks for a few months. Explaining why we they lost over and over, trying not to blame this and that. Trying to explain what they think was the reasons. puke. Reality is, when u have a team of quite average players - maybe one excellent player - you can't set your expectations over the moon. It will get you in trouble
