More chance of FIFA banning us... our league is missing the requiredments set out by AFC and FIFA.

Now we're making threats? I'm fairly sure if Government interferes with the FFA at all then FIFA are more than happy to ban us.

For once I agree with the Australian government. We need to move the World Cup to a country that morally fits with our values - like the USA, a country who we proudly support as it spreads peace around the world in the form of orchestrated bombing campaigns and invasions.

Who the F said the government could tell FFA what to do with the Socceroo's... part of the article reads as copied below and it tells me the writer knows SFA about both the WC and Football.

If only the rest of the world cared about AFL (or Rugby).
Then all we would have to do is work out some way that boycotting the entire AFL (and Rugby) seasons could be used to punish other countries for political reasons.
How excellent would that be!

Full  trophy cabinet (but yours looks a bit empty) !

A journalist asked this morning at a press conferrnce..Julia first disregarded. Journalist asked again...planting this headline they wanted. No one should take this serious relax. And Australia would ONLY do it if other allies do it first. There's no way we would be doing it first and there's no way the UK and others will be boycotting.

we all know this is pathetic political bullshit, but as foreign affairs minister, did she consider the 6000 Australian fans going to Russia when she made these comments? Are we more likely to be a target of Russian authorities (or even the locals) by these type of provocative comments?

Would never fly. Silly comment, but probably taken out of context by media. Fifa has a long list of examples of severe punishments for nations who let politics interfere with football. This would be no different. Australia would be banned from FIFA sanctioned events within hours. Silly thing to say or suggest.

This article, like all articles on 442, is nothing but clickbait shit.

442 is everything that the worst of British jounalism can offer to Australia.

she said on Twitter that the Government "is not considering a boycott" of the World Cup.

This is why boycotts are fucking stupid. It opens up a can of worms and you end up looking like a hypocrite.

Boycotts were most helpful against the Botha Government in ending Apartheid. I think they can work and they are certainly not stupid. But it's all about strategic co-ordination of the boycott. Never underestimate the strength of 'soft power'. Vladimir Putin relies heavily on it and exploits it to attempt to derive popular support. Garry Kasparov, the Russian dissident and chess grandmaster and former world champion, has made the point that it's very difficult for people in Russia to stand up against Putin while Western nations don't stand up to Putin. We know, from history, that appeasement doesn't work (especially not of a revisionist power with Russia's unique cultural and social traits). The West has been very remiss in matching up poorly against Putin's regime (and China's) on the soft power front.

However, you're quite right that the hypocrisy aspect needs to be considered. That doesn't mean that all boycotts should be dismissed on the grounds that there's a degree of hypocrisy, though.

Having said all that, HMG won't make the England team boycott. They can't count on adequate multilateral support. So they can't make their boycott effective. The geopolitical balance (as well as the non-qualification of some teams) means they just can't muster enough support. So the Socceroos will play.
