Bolton boss offers apology after Burton Albion defeat

A disconsolate Bolton boss apologised to supporters, who had voiced their displeasure in no uncertain terms at the Pirelli Stadium, chanting to the players: “You’re not fit to wear the shirt.”

A small group of fans also tried to confront Parkinson and his staff in the dugout before stewards intervened, while several people were also escorted from the stadium after fighting broke out moments after Burton’s second goal.

Wanderers have one last chance to escape and victory against Forest, coupled with defeat for Barnsley and Burton at Derby and Preston, respectively, would be enough. Birmingham could also get dragged in should they fail to beat Fulham, with Reading – who face Cardiff but have a better goal difference - also an outside shot.

Barnsley could have been relegated on Saturday if they had failed to win, depending on other results, but they will now start the final day of the season outside the drop zone on goal difference.
The Tykes stayed level on points with rivals Burton Albion, as they both leapfrogged Bolton Wanderers - who lost 2-0 to the Brewers.
But Barnsley will now avoid the drop if they match or better both Burton and Bolton's results away at Derby on Sunday, 6 May.

How Burton Albion could stay in the Championship with a record low points total

Burton Albion could stay up with just 42 points - a potential record low for a 46-game season.
Depending on how other results go on Sunday, the Brewers could draw and stay up with 42 points.
The present record was set in 2013/14 when Birmingham City avoided the drop with 44 points
No second-tier team has ever stayed up with fewer than 44 points in a 46-game season, meaning the Brewers could set a new record.

There is, technically, a way Burton could lose to Preston North End on Sunday (12:30pm) and stay up with 41 points.
However, Albion would need Barnsley to lose by more than 20 goals in which case Burton could leapfrog them on goal difference.
Stranger things have not happened.

Birmingham City will be roared on by their biggest crowd in more than three years against Fulham on Sunday.

Well it’s going to be a 28,000 sell-out, the club have opened areas of the stadium that have been effectively mothballed for three years.

This week club have decided to open Blocks 1-4 in the upper tier of the Gil Merrick Stand for the first time in several seasons, tickets were snapped up within a couple of days

With the Tilton Road end, Main Stand and Kop full Garry Monk’s men could be watched by in excess of 28,000, including 3,300 Fulham supporters.

I would never back against a full St Andrew’s and motivated Birmingham City team. As long as the players aren’t fearful and passive.

I think a point would effectively guarantee safety because it’s difficult to envisage Burton and Barnsley both winning away from home against play-off hopefuls.

It wouldn’t surprise me at all, though, if Bolton beat Nottingham Forest and the final few minutes of the season are incredibly nervy. You've got to expect Blues to stay up, though.

READING FC boss Paul Clement branded their 4-0 thrashing by Ipswich Town ‘shameful and embarrassing’ as their relegation battle goes down to the wire.
Royals slumped to their heaviest home league defeat in more than 11 years after a dismal display against the managerless Tractor Boys.
All four goals came in the last 20 minutes after some shambolic defending from Clement’s men, leaving them 19th in the Championship table and just two points above the drop zone going into the final game
Royals now face the daunting prospect of having to avoid defeat at second-placed Cardiff City this Sunday to keep their fate in their own hands (12.30pm ko) and avoid being caught by Birmingham, Barnsley and Burton.
