I know all that. It indicates that MacLaren won't be in the squad announced on Tuesday and has no chance of playing at the World Cup. The final squad will be picked out of the 26 players going to Turkey.

There's nothing stopping them from taking 27 to Turkey.
JMac might have to sleep on the floor but I'm sure he won't mind.

Also reports that Bailey Wright and Alex Gersbach are another two players who won't be joining the squad in Turkey - source

Those are more understandable, though Wright can consider himself unlucky. Fell out of favour at Bristol City at exactly the wrong moment. I wonder what happened there.

Gersbach looked OK the couple of times I saw him play, but there's obviously something deficient there. Struggled to break into an average Norwegian team and now plays for a poor 2nd division French club, where his spot in the starting 11 isn't exactly guaranteed (I think he's been left on the bench a few times). It's just not good enough. He hasn't earned a Socceroos spot.

Bailey Wright was poor at right-back vs Norway against pace, so deserves to be cut.

Considering only one of Karacic and Risdon likely to go in 23, then some cover required there. Degenek and Milligan probably the stronger back-ups

Rosenbourg is roughly Celtic quality so playing as much as he has for them is pretty decent by our current standards

Degenek, Jurman, Sainsbury and Susnjar the centre halves if Bailey Wright is cut? I find it hard to believe he'd pick Susnjar and Degenek over Wright...

Lol this - why are so many people critical of a goalscoring striker because he doesn't spend half of his time in defence 'tracking back'?

Because he tends to disappear and contribute nothing when he has no service. Cahill can always pop up with a freak header, and Juric holds the ball up bringing others into play. MacLaren is good at tap-ins and not much else. I'd still take him to Turkey at least because he seems to be in good form, but he's not the type of striker that suits the Socceroos at the moment.

It's not about tracking back, his work rate is fine.  Good strikers still get involved in the play when they're not scoring, something Maclaren severely lacks.

In all of his games for the Socceroos he has been on the periphery and hasn't impressed at all.

Suddenly he scores a hat trick and it's full blown meltdown mode that he's not picked over players who have played well for the Socceroos.

We're not a good enough team at World Cup level to give him the type of service he needs to be effective.

He creates a lot of opportunities with his off the ball. I think players who are good off the ball (McLaren Kruse and Holman) tend to get underrated by fans

No opinion on whether he is good enough for our 23

My biggest worry with him is he takes a while to climatize to a team and missed easy chances early in each season before exploding late in the season

it's not suddenly. he just came of the back of a golden boot. had a shitty club transfer but has managed to salvage his season with a smart loan - something rarely done for an o/s aussie when they get a shitty club transfer.

really it comes down to how BVM sets up. you look at how neil lennon had celtic set up, they also had a smaller striker, griffiths, working angles and runs into the box like maclaren does. im not surprised that maclaren is fitting in well under him.

the issue for the NT has just been how the manager has set up the team.  if you are sitting back with a lone striker to take long balls, then maclaren is not your man.  you play on the front foot and press and he is.  you get playmaking wings that also cut in and take shots on goal and maclaren will do well.  you get 2 wings that hug the sideline and lob in crosses and maclaren is not your man.

Nothing to do with the hatrick at all, he is the most consistent striker at the moment who has 8 goals in 15 games, 11 starts and deserves to be there plain and simple.

Whats the incentive of playing well at your club regulary while others are getting selected for sitting on the bench, not playing regular or getting selected for past achivements.

While he is promising he is clearly the 3rd best option, Meredith has been a rock for Milwall all season while Gersbach failed to get into the Rosenborg squad and hasn't done as much in Ligue 2 either. So much so he has been moved to midfield and the wing.

Rosenborg is definitely not far off Celtic quality.. Just remember Celtic were only a goal better than them in this seasons UCL qualifiers.

Unfortunately I didn't because streams were impossible to find
For rosenbourg he lost his place to a youngster and started to fall behind in terms of game tome

Still very highly rate him. He missed the occasional game for his French side but hard to say whether it was form suspension or injuries

I've been very impressed with him for the roos particularly in the confeds

He hasn't completely cemented his place at left back in Ligue 2,  he is definitely talented but based on absolutely every measure he hasn't had as strong of a season as Meredith the biggest of which is the fact he has played a quarter of the minutes of Meredith.

Honestly, if it's between Gersbach and an anonymous Championship grafter like Meredith, I'd pick the former any day. If it were up to me though,  I would cut them both tomorrow. Gersbach hasn't done anywhere close to enough, and Meredith sounds pretty shit in general (plus he's old).
