Very interesting numbers for NRL If Gallop applied the fish where the fish are analogy to NRL,the result would be .Qld,Melb,Qld in that order for most popular teams.Yes North Qld is third and fourth on fta and stv metrics. That despite no fish in North Qld and North qld cowboys being rubbish this year. It shows fishing metrics are bs.People do like regional teams.Everyone likes to have a second team and people from big cities dont want to watch other teams from their city. They like to have a second team that's regional. It's what I have been saying. I would much rather watch a new Tasmanain team or other regional team than any third team from Melb or Syd.The Nrl results show so do others. Having more teams in big cities doesn't mean more viewers than for regional teams. One more thing.Where is that flog Mr AFL.Qld AFL teams. Hahaha.

Hahaha. The cowboys are a pretty big brand, johnathan thurstan is one of the greats of the entire sport and they have won a recent title. Nobody cared to watch fury games though even with fowler. Im sure nz warriors rate decent as well..phoenix though..... A tasmanian team in the A league would need about 7 home games worth of tv viewership to probably match 2 derby match ratings. This is always going to work against regional sokkah teams. Not that i agree with this metrics nonsense but the numbers wouldnt stack up. Not for our code anyway.

The Sydney and Melb metrics relies on the creation of new derbies against other Syd and Melb teams. However it's pure speculation. Two teams in a big city might mean a derby but three is no guarantee. There is just as much a chance that they are like Melb Heart or worse. They could also diminish the value of the existing derbies. It's new territory, having three city teams, but I believe they could easily both be flops. With small crowds and no passion . Sometimes FFA believe their own bs. In my opinion not one of the proposed teams has any advantage over another. It's pure fantasy to believe there is an untapped big city team that will produce massive crowds and ratings. The overwhelming factor for success will be engagement with local community and the ability to create a competitive team. That could be Tasmainia,Geelong Canberra or whoever ,regardless of location and perceived number of fish. Nothing would be worse than two new teams that are Sydney Heart and Melbourne Heart2.

@southmelbourne It's an interesting point you raise about the Cowboys being a big brand. That's the whole point .You can create a big brand name from anything form any location. But you need to let people do this. Not lock them out because of biased metrics which are no guarantee of success. As a South supporter you should know this better than anyone. When the Cowboys were allowed to enter the NRL ,it wasn't because of pay tv metrics. It wasn't based on population(fish). The overwhelming reason was passion for the game in the region. That passion has now translated into a big support base and big ratings.Yet the population is smaller than Central Coast ,by a long way.

The Wallabies will always out rate the Socceroos friendly's. Wallabies Vs All Blacks should out rate Socceroo world cup qualifying games imo.

Are you sure of that? 23/8/17Rugby's woes in Australia have been further emphasised by poor TV ratings for last weekend's Bledisloe Cup test. The All Blacks win over the Wallabies in Sydney was watched by just 371,000 metro free-to-air viewers across the Tasman. Adding in the pay TV audience, the number was still a disappointing 600,000. It rated just ninth in free-to-air programmes, being beaten by three news bulletins, two AFL games, and episodes of Father Brown, Shetland and Gardening Australia.
15/11/17
Socceroos victory delivers Nine midweek win: 1.16m metro • World Cup qualification big news for SBS and Optus too • Football sets new live streaming record for 9Now See full ratings figures on the Mediaweek Morning Report here.

Gallop said earlier this year that ratings were down because of a general decline for all sports.
BUSTED!
NRL. audience viewership is up 1million. Sponsorship up over 25% 37% increase in club distributions
Time for journalists to ask FFA why they are doing so badly at running the game.

@ crimsoncrusoe
No one believes Gallop right?
That said AFL viewing figures were down 13% after the first couple of months ... personally I blame AFLX, once a footy fan has seen that thing WHY would they tune into a cricket field full of pigeon chasing 😂

Sponsorship up 11% this season. Distribution to the clubs up 40% this season. The picture on finances is in the positive. Metrics is another story but in my view most of the drop last season was a result of the bickering between the APFCA and the FFA just like it was a couple of seasons ago with the bickering over the CBA.

Gyfox Fortunatley the tv rights were settled before last season.Gallops comments were about the decline in ratings. That was his (FFA's/Lowy's )call. He was wrong. We all know the real reasons. And surely by now he knows too.Not that that impacts the major priority of retaining control of a broken franchise model.

Just noticed that NRL attendances are up 4% on last year, and around the level they were exactly 10 years ago.
