+xIt was a decent effort from our boys and a little unlucky we didn't get a point from the game. The Risdon penalty decision was one of those 50/50 calls that could have gone either way. I thought he might have clipped the player right at the very end when he broke free, but its still inconclusive. Having said that he still wouldn't have got the ball but if he clips him, he clips him. I am still not convinced that Mile should be in the team, he really scares me when he is possession of the ball and on at least 2 occasions he was caught with the ball while trying to casually stroll out of defence. You can't afford to give cheap ball like that. I would have liked to have seen a little bit more go forward with the team. We still have this tendency of playing our back to goal and playing back rather than forward, just turn the corner and go. This is where our technique and body shape let us down. Its the way we receive the pass and where we are passing the ball to our players (ALWAYS SLIGHTLY BEHIND). Its not a terrible result and if France get decent results against Peru and Denmark then we are in for a real shot. Overall a decent performance, we needed to take a more cautious and pragmatic approach to this game and I am glad we did. If we played Ange ball in this match I felt we would have got destroyed. In the long run we want to get to that position where teams have to worry about the way we play and adjust, but now is not that time. End of the day, 2-1 is a phenomenal result for a team that didn't have a single shot on goal in the game.

+xBehich was so close to clearing the Pogba goal. Ryan was positioned well. Had he been on his line he'd have caught it. come on Johnszasz where's the next group game thread Iceland vs Argentina

Tough game and thought for the most part risdon did well. Consider who he usually plays against and the quality he was up against tonight. We needed to do more in attack we rarely had a solid chance on their goal. we knew we would only have s few chanced but were often too slow to pull the trigger. The second goal was a bit unlucky but so be it. Impressed with the defensive work of mooy. Leckie and kruse did well and behich to. Milligan made me eat my words about him rarelly putting a foot wrong.

+xI hear what you say HighTimes, but to be honest I’m over heroic losses. They do nothing for me. We never expected to win this one and a GD of -1 is probably the best result we could hope for. I see the result in the context of the main mission-get out of the group.
What hurts is losing to a bullshit penalty call and an arsy goal where the ball is a couple of centimetres over ( whole of the ball must be past the whole of the line)

+xIt was a clear penalty IMO. Risdon glanced the ball. By the letter of the law it's not a pen. Can't blame a ref for not seeing it, but you can blame the VAR.

+xThe french player blaming the pitch by saying "It was a bit dry" just killed me. Yeah buddy, it was the pitch that nearly beat you. Idiot. To be fair the pitch did look a bit like SFS or Suncorp on bad day.

Frankly, this whole system of the ref being put under the pump to watch a replay is just wrong. It's like being given a 200 word paragraph to proof read in 10 seconds and 10,000 people yelling at you. Look at it without pressure and you will notice 50 typos. On the spot looks perfect.

Our group is not too dissimilar to 2006.
France - Brazil Denmark - Croatia Peru - Japan
I think we can get a point against Denmark & a win against Peru.
Hopefully France batter both the Danes & Peru after this match.

By now, American Samoa must have realised that Australias 22-0 win over Tonga two days earlier was no fluke.

Their second goal was like a slow train wreck. Such intense pressure. We almost saw it through.

So it still came down to the VAR even though the ref looked at it, oh ok. I thought he did get a touch as well, but also did clip him after but don't know the rules enough on that one but you said its not a pen by the rulebook. I knew they would get the benefit as they are a big country, doubt Australia would have got it.

+x+xBehich was so close to clearing the Pogba goal. Ryan was positioned well. Had he been on his line he'd have caught it. I thought Behich got a deflection in the first replay but haven't seen a close replay Slo Mo close replay makes it look like a bloody own goal & Behich seemed to hesitate when he probably could have cleared the ball.

+xGreat performance by the whole team. I honestly think risdon got a touch on that ball and have no idea how that can be ruled an obvious error. How Sainsbury is not playing for a big team i have no idea, he's a world class defender. Always said this re Sainsbury. Guy has everything a CB needs. The Australian van dijk. Should be starting at least at a Europa league level team. To lesser extent Millsy too, travesty he never got to play in europe

Stat of only 4 shots isn't too pretty. Our crosses were somewhat dangerous.

I'm taking the view that it wasn't a clear and obvious penalty to trigger a VAR review. Took a while for the call to be made... rubbish decision.

Gary Neville, Partice Evra, Henrik Larsson and Mark Clattenburg all adamant it was a penalty on ITV: no mention of how badly France actually played because of Australia
He was a man of specific quirks. He believed that all meals should be earned through physical effort. He also contended, zealously like a drunk with a political point, that the third dimension would not be possible if it werent for the existence of water.

Slow motion confirmed their opinion. Risdon touched the ball first. Are you sure they were talking about the French penalty and not the Australian one?

Some are saying it was a pen, others it wasn't. Even after using the Var to have such a split on such a close call makes use of the VAR wrong. The initial decision of the referee should have been the right call.

If anything the footage was more conclusive about the contact with the ball than any contact with the player.

+xIf anything the footage was more conclusive about the contact with the ball than any contact with the player. Because for some fucking reason they decided to show the only 2 angles where it wasn't clear that he touched it and sent that to the onfield ref. But can we really be surprised after seeing failure after failure of the system the entire year?
