Honda is the kind of marquee the league should be aiming for. It lends more credibility to the league to sign a big name player who is still young enough to be the best player in his team (or the league) then to sign a 'bigger' name who is clearly past it. Even if people don't know who he is, they can be educated quick smart that this is a different calibre of player.

Even as a SFC fan, I see Honda's signing as potentially one of the best signings in A-league history. 1. Playing wise, if he performs anywhere near potential, could be close best ever in A-league. 2. Marquee wise, a Asian marquee, huge potential there. He will put extra bums on seats, not like Del Piero, but, if he plays to his potential, he could drag them them in another way. I really don't understand the criticism.

See WelNix that's the kind of marque players you need to sign if you're serious about competing.

The thread title should be updated to add the word 'rumour'.

Im still salty for FFA blocking Lampard to City a few seasons ago before they had a marquee/guest fund. He then went on to bang some in for Manchester.
Even though a City fan, im still pissed that Dimante was blocked for Victory too

How many of Honda's caliber and age want to come to play in the A-league? How many of Honda's caliber and age would be a free agent for the money dry A-league clubs to poach? The A-League only takes hand outs,,, our clubs are not rich enough to pay any other club a transfer fee. He probably really is doing this to experience the lifestyle? He went to Mexico before this, where he still probabaly could have made some decent money in another Euro club, or much more money back in the J-League.

+xIs this confirmed or not? Not. Neither the club nor Honda himself have confirmed anything. Only the media has said that it is happening.

If the Honda deal falls at the final hurdle, you got to put a fork in this whole marquee "war-chest" from Fox Sports.......it's done.

+xIf the Honda deal falls at the final hurdle, you got to put a fork in this whole marquee "war-chest" from Fox Sports.......it's done. Why? without it, it wouldn't have even been a possibility. Deals fall through all the time. The marquee system is dumb and should be scrapped (along with the cap) but as long as its here if the broadcaster wants to put up more cash so what. its not like its been pulled from somewhere else to pay for it. Having said that though, the longer it goes without an announcement the less likely it becomes. Hopefully it does happen.

The marquee system isn't the best. But it's an absolute joke when the governing body is lobbying and assisting a club to get a player. Yes Cahill included.

Couldn't agree more - I'm confident that once the shackles are let of, we'll have 4 or 5 Honda level players in the league. Blokes like Eduardo and Diamanti were more than happy to come here, it was only the ridiculous squad and salary cap rules that denied them.

Sucks that he's not coming home yet but glad to see him going back to Hibs. He was much happier there and if he continues his form from last year he'll be undroppable as the Socceroo's number 9. Victory definitely was an option though and he definitely was considering it, but we'll still be here once he's reached the heights in Europe.
