reckon there has been a bit more hype in melbourne over the past 48 hours. still don't think we'll get much more than 30k, but i guess thats just based on how things unfolded last year. maybe the extra 2 weeks waiting has got people salivating for a bit of live sport? i guess we'll find out on the weekend.

The club is expecting 40k+ based on strong pre sales and very strong membership sales. Paul Trimboli on FNR.

Just a barometer figure, really. When the HAL was in stride, these games were 15k blockbusters. 10k is about right for where we're at with the league in general.

So, no? How can a 5k drop be considered a positive much less at the opening game of the season.

I didn't say it was positive. I said it was reflective of the state of the league. The league is in the toilet. Hence, 10k.

No it is a shit number and a shit crowd. First game of the season, and against Sydney who came 1st in the league last year and only 10k people show up.
However although it is a shit crowd, it still looked good on tv because it was a great stadium for our league and Adelaide itself.
I just wish more clubs had these types of stadiums, because although it was a shit crowd, at the same time it's good when playing in the right venue.
Now just imagine tonights game was played at Adelaide oval. Yeh maybe 15k would have turned out ( for some fucked up reason I can't understand ) but it would have looked disgusting on tv, and would have been boring for the fans at the game.

Thats decent...

I think its fair to say Football in Melbourne is a strong number 2 code a long way in front of both league and union... you could add Adelaide, Perth & Tassie as well.

Aus. Rules is deceptively weak in SA. It rules the airwaves, but at the grassroots level has been dying. Part of this is because of the decline of rural SA towns - SA is almost a City-State. The other part is the disruption caused by the AFL expansion which severed the professional game from the grass roots. SA has aroud 70,000 registered aussie rules players. It may seem impressive, except 15k are adults and the rest is either schools or auskick. The AFL has been padding out their numbers with auskick for over 15 years. Meanwhile, football participation grows organically at over 15% per year.

Give it another 15 years. Dead man walking.

40,000 is a great crowd all things considering.

Very interested to see more derbies with a third Melbourne team (likewise with Sydney).

Sure.

While the AFL may pad out its overall numbers, the club registration figures are there for anyone who can look past a headline.

In 2017, According to the SANFL, South Australia reported an increase of 5.2% to more than 50,000 registered club players for the first time ever.
The SANFL reported that with schools and auskick programs there were 175,000 participants in South Australia last year.

Absolute bs figures all round. You know how flaky they are with the extent they go to cherry pick figures. 3.5 participants for every single player? LOL. That's a lot of water boys.

Believe what you want, it doesnt make it true. You cant just invent a decline because you want one when theres no evidence to suggest it. Yes rural clubs are struggling, but this has been offset somewhat by the rapid growth in the womens game since 2016.

School, auskick and promotional visits are a thing, as itemised on the national figures for the AFL, and several other states.

If you think everyone doesnt cherry pick the figures to suit their agenda when issuing press releases - including football - then you are delusional.
