Hi everyone,
Was playing a 40 over game with light drizzle  and none of my drives went fast off the ground and thus I only could get singles and dot balls.
Does a wet out field really slow the ball so much? I just could not get it away for a boundary and that added to the scoreboard pressure.
Whats some good tactics when faced with batting in a wet outfield? Do I need to try to add more power ?
Thanks !

Wet ball is difficult for the bowler to control - spinners or seamers. No fun in the outfield. And running in even with spikes on isn't going to be too fun, and they will struggle to trust in their landing as much. The golden rule of this #gent20 is that even though evening dew slows down the ball heading to the boundary, it is much harder to bowl and field in with a wet ball - so teams bat second despite the boundary disadvantage.

Just try aerial pressure of 6's and hitting the ball harder if you're good enough... #gent20. And while it is not a good batting technique and far more risky - both for nicks and regular field catches, you could try hitting the ball earlier instead of later to get an angle that does plonk the ball immediately into the turf, but allows to skim over. But you'd have to be uber talented to do that most intl batsmen are unable to switch batting timing... and all want to learn to play as late and with as soft hands as they can - which is part of your problem here. You're too good and keeping it on the ground.

A far more simple thing to try may be to drive more on the up, that will give you more of a skimming angle.

You could also ball tamper, pick up the ball and cover it in dishwashing detergent. The detergent will allow the ball break the surface tension of the water on the ground and enable the ball to smash through it much more easily. It still won't be good as a dry, but it will be better than before.

I'm no cricket coach but this is what i did in wet conditions. The first few overs like most other innings play it safe, see what the ball is doing and get your eye in. Play on the front foot a lot, in these conditions the ball will stay low and the pace bowlers due to the lack of grip don't bowl at a higher pace so you aren't likely to see many short balls and if you do they will be tame.

Also always look for the quick singles, the lack of grip and tougher to handle ball is a nightmare for fielders too. If you are alert you'll be able to pick up quite a few extra runs.

But on the whole mainly because i was never a power hitter i never tried to hit the ball harder, doing that will probably lead to you throwing your wicket away. Just bat smart and focus on a good technique and be switched on running between the wicket because that is where your runs are coming from.

Thanks everyone for the replies ! I thought I was a terrible batsman (I still maybe) but I just got to learn to adapt to wet conditions!

Anyone complaining about driving the ball along the ground and not finding the boundary because of a wet outfield sounds far from a terrible batsman to me. Now had you asked how to keep your drives and cut shots along the ground, however...

How many grips do you have on your bat? You may want to take some grips off your bat when its drizzling... If you're someone with 2, 3 or 4 grips... that is. The extra grips while they may be for feel, also have the same effect as soft hands with the extra cushioning. The softer your hands, the less the ball flies before its first bounce. With a wet field, this water drag effect is exponential... the further the ball travels first, the further-er it will travel overall...

The bat may feel a little foreign at first... and I have not heard of anyone ever trying this, it just occurred to me now...

A few things:

- The longer you bat, the worse the ball will be for the opposition and the harder it will be for them to control it. You will receive far more full tosses and other wild deliveries later in the innings once the ball becomes a cake of soap. Even if you are only knocking singles you will get a chance to hit the shit stuff later.

- the ball tends to skid if you are batting on AstroTurf or synthetic wickets, meaning you are going to have to play front foot and hit it over the infield if you want to find the boundary. One of my favourite shots in this situation is the drive over extra cover - it’s a front foot shot that will go into an area where there are unlikely to be too many fielders on the fence.

- Don’t forget you can use the pace of fast bowlers to play the leg glance or late cut for some easy runs.

- your danger dismissals in wet conditions are bowled and lbw to a skidding straight fast ball.

- I’m an off spin bowler and I hate using a wet ball. Most finger spinners won’t be able to grin the ball to spin it, so try to get aggressive against these bowlers if they give you something loose.

I learned a bit from this post.
