FFA hired both Honda and Chewbacca for new audiences, targeting some missing ' segment' , no other reason.

Conflating their methods with my argument is a strawman, plain and simple.

If you really aren't happy that Honda's here then you're even more of a cynic than I'd thought.

I didn't mention Victory at all, but I'm sure they're loving having someone else pay for a valuable player taking points off everyone else in the Balanced League.
Show me evidence he's making a noticeable impact anywhere except on Victory's points tally and I'll listen

Kogarah was chockers with Japanese on Sunday. No, I didn't count them all.

FFA money went to Del Piero and to Cahill, it's about time we had our turn.

@crimsoncrusoe

Matey, you neglected 4, which is the bulk of the point of differences to London I mentioned in my post.

Locality (which another poster tried to justify as a similarity between London and Melbourne) is not enough.

We can barely get 50,000 average to watch games on TV lol.

Dharawal FC? Budding A-League club could assume Indigenous identity

If Southern Expansion wins the race for an A-League licence on December 12, Australian sport could have its first club representative of an indigenous nation.

The Dharawal country is set to heavily influence the identity of the football club and could even be included in the name of the franchise, should it be granted entry into the competition.

Based in the Sutherland Shire and drawing support from St George and Illawarra regions, the bid's catchment area is almost identical to the boundaries of the Dharawal nation.

That hasn’t gone unnoticed by Southern Expansion’s directors who have already engaged a marketing firm to establish their colours, logo and brand in anticipation of being awarded an A-League licence.

It's understood Dharawal community elders have already been consulted with over images and names that could be respectfully used for the club.

Graham Arnold once said that the A-league is better than the Eredivisie, is this the message the national team should say when we are nowhere near close even comparing the overall structure to them let alone the overall standard?

Let's do that if we want to be an ambitious football nation, otherwise what's the point of the media, coaches, players even talking it up as a potentially serious player when the structures don't even compare?

Arnold says a lot of weird shit.
Theatre goers will believe what he said
Football people will shake their heads and see the folly in his comments.

My opinion is that we are dealing with idiots. The latest article about expansion in the smh confirms it (link below). They don't even know how many teams they want to introduce next season or how many games to play. I mean this is the sort of crap that the FFA should have thought about 12-18 months ago when this was first put out there. Did they not know that having 2 more teams would result in more games being played or if they decided on just a home and away season that 22 games is just not enough. Now the talk is of introducing 4 more teams for next season as a possibility. I wish I could say I was making this sh*t up but how do can you not be aware of this when deciding on expansion. This sort of thing should have been planned long ago and the conversations with fox and other stakeholders should have happened long ago. It boggles the mind.

My preferred option now is to delay this by one year but put the process in place right now so that you can build momentum for the season after. The FFA were too caught up with dealing with the governance issue which was also their fault and something which could have been sorted out long ago. Aggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhh

https://www.smh.com.au/sport/soccer/growing-pains-ffa-ponders-structure-of-12-team-a-league-season-20181128-p50iya.html

I think you are basically right.
But they are constrained by an ideology and ecosystem of their own making.
Closed league.
Protect the owners (franchisees) "lost" investment, or in other words prioritise their recovery of their lost investment. (hence no promotion or relegation) And this affects everything else;
Geography - where to put the next franchise
Licence Fees - for entry into the league to minimise the existing owners loss of revenues
Fish where the fish are
Demands for a greater share of the games revenues.
No or little player compensation fees - or free and open access to all the best youth talent

Frank made promises to the franchise owners over turning a profit (though in Victory's case not enough profit) and now its all about getting their pound of flesh or "return of investment losses" everything is now compromised.

The owners won't allow the Global Football Standards to be implemented as in their opinion its not in their interest to do so.

I think you might be talking to the wrong person.

I have supported the principals of the Crawford Report of an independent national competition.

And the key word is “independent” this new model will be compromised and beholden to the owners.

This has its roots in a football model that has no relation to the Global football standards.

Because somehow we are different! Now that difference is affecting the game in a negative way again.

Yep, exactly

Opinions can change, and when the Independent Closed League doesn't rain money either, they'll at least be in a better position to try something different themselves.

The independent A-league is actually beholden to the all powerful state federations. The A-league clubs get to help with the structure of independence. But the vote to bring the independent A-league into existence excludes the A-league clubs from voting.

Eibar: The female president & football philosophy behind Real Madrid conquerors

By Matt DavisBBC Sport
Eibar were punching well above their weight against Real's Galacticos. Situated in a town of just 27,000, sitting in a valley in northern Spain, the club is the smallest competing in the top five leagues in Europe.

As Gorostiza is keen to point out, that was ahead of their much bigger Basque rivals Athletic Bilbao, Alaves and Real Sociedad.

"It is difficult," she says. "There are clubs in the three capitals of the province and we are in the middle, the smallest one."

Sydney FC to reject any cash compensation from Southern Expansion

A-League hopefuls Southern Expansion are offering to pay a seven-figure sum to Sydney FC as compensation for encroaching on their territory and threatening the Sky Blues' core membership base in the city's south.

Should the Sutherland Shire-based bid gain entry into the competition, they will propose paying a $1 million "structural adjustment package" to rivals Sydney FC, who have staunchly opposed the inclusion of the group as part of A-League expansion.

Heather Reid saying a lot more than anyone else...........

“The capacity to pay the licence fee is a major issue.

FFA does not want to be in a position where the decision is made and then, for whatever reason, within a short time we find that it’s the FFA that must then manage that licence arrangement and take on the financial risk associated with that decision.

“We need understand the total financial picture of the FFA at the moment and the future financial picture as well given that it’s been reasonably well broadcast that at least four sponsors are up for renewal next year. So that’s a sizable amount of money there.

“So, the capacity to pay the licence fee is one issue.

“The capacity to maintain the licence and have an extra $8-10 million to support the team on an annual basis is also a big issue.

So, it’s that sustainability and viability of the bid that’s important

Former Football Federation Australia director Danny Moulis has thrown his support behind A-League expansion hopefuls Canberra and South Melbourne, declaring the bids "streets ahead" of the four others.Moulis spent three years on the FFA board but was not re-elected for a second term at the highly-publicised annual general meeting last month.

New chairman Chris Nikou and Moulis were the only members seeking re-election after former leader Steve Lowey and four of his directors stepped down.

Moulis played for the Socceroos and Canberra City before serving as the Canberra Cosmos chairman and starting a successful law firm in the capital.

Canberra are one of six bids - and the only outside Melbourne and Sydney - left in the expansion race with two teams expected to be announced following an FFA board meeting on December 12.

Team 11 are one of three bids from Melbourne in the hunt for an A-League licence, alongside Western Melbourne Group and South Melbourne. Southern Expansion from Sydney's south, South West Sydney and Canberra round out the six.

It is still unknown if the new teams will come into the A-League next season or the following year.

A-League boss Greg O'Rourke was initially set to recommend two teams for the FFA board to ratify in October but that meeting never went ahead after Lowey announced he'd step down.

It is understood Canberra was right in the mix two months ago and Moulis believes his hometown is one of two clear-cut choices for expansion.

"The A-League needs football-focussed organisations that speak to the fans, come from areas with deep national league history, have the necessary stadium infrastructure in place, and will create the kind of contests that will ignite the competition," Moulis told The Canberra Times.

"On those measures, South Melbourne and Canberra are streets ahead of anyone else.”

Canberra are considered the only "ready to go" bid after securing significant investment from the ACT government, signing more than 7000 members and inking a deal to play at Canberra Stadium.

They've also signed memorandum of understandings with Capital Football and former expansion bid the Wollongong Wolves.

There is speculation that as many as four teams could be added to the league to solve a scheduling headache

Teams currently play each other three times in a 27-game schedule. A 12-team home-and-away season would see teams play 22 games which isn't enough football.
Another spanner in the works is the Wellington Phoenix who were set metrics by the previous board to extend their licence past next season. The Phoenix signed a 10-year conditional licence with the FFA in 2016.
The first four years, ending in 2020, were guaranteed, while further three-year extensions were contingent on meeting metrics such as attendance figures and television numbers. But the A-League are keen to become independent of the FFA which would see the metrics scrapped.

The new board could also decide to not enforce them.
It is understood Wellington have the support of the current clubs but that could count for little after Perth Glory owner Tony Sage claimed they had not been consulted in the expansion process.

It seems no scenario is off the table and it is believed the FFA have discussed adding three teams, which would somewhat resolve the scheduling predicament.
Scrapping the Phoenix metrics and adding teams from Canberra, Melbourne and Sydney would form a 13-team competition and make a 24-game home-and-away season. Just enough to keep almost everyone happy

.It would also see the A-League come good on their promise to "expand into new territories".

Fuck me sideways.

And yet a majority of football fans wanted Craig Foster to run football in this country. The same guy backing the most pathetic bid of all new teams fighting to join the league.
Southern football and anytime associated with this joke of an idea can go fuck themselves.
Also with all the claimed money to be behind the bid it confuses the fuck out of me why no one has been able to convince these so called millionaires to back a stand alone Wollongong bid themselves to rival Wollongong Wolves instead of this circus club they have in mind.

You do know the Chinese Property Developers behond SEX have been 'schmoozing' NSW state MPs all along ?

They're not planning on rebuilding Wollongong

Closed HAL is failing with 10 teams
Closed HAL failed with 11
FFA forced to try a 12 team Closed HAL thatll just create 2 more mid table also-rans
and still this weird 16-team panacea gets trotted out.
Theres a sticky for this nonsense

Why do you assume because he is Greek he has to like South? Fair enough his bias towards Canberra but im sure he went over the Melbourne bids and thought hmm only 1 of the 3 makes sense here in terms of immediate expansion.
