Let’s not bother to qualify for the WC then since it will be in the Middle East...

Won’t be watching NT games whilst he’s our manager. How we could force out someone so passionate about Australian football with a clear plan on developing as a nation for a petty, naive, bitter old man is beyond me.#NotMySocceroosManager

Qatar weather won't be an issue either tbh. Went there in December, it was low 20's and remained so all day.

How does Arnie's general gameplan we saw at this Asian cup differ to that of Ange?

If it’s not Arnie fault and it’s the cattle, then we shouldn’t be paying Arnie 1.4m a year to have no influence... Sorry Arnie but we can probably just hire anyone and get the same result.

Of course. You can't polish a turd.

But if they give me $1.4m I will certainly have a go.

Arnie has completely lost me after his decisions at the Asian Cup. Sainsbury could easily be replaced with a traffic cone. MacLaren is about to be dumped from his club due to poor form and had no business playing more than 30 minutes total in the tournament. Mabil was the star of the tournament and he failed to start him in the Quarter final. We fluked a once in a lifetime journey to reach the final of Uzbekistan, UAE, Qatar and he stuffed it up. He won't be sacked until the WC qualification in about two years but if he plays quality European/South American teams in the meantime he is going to be raped.

Yep a disappointing tournament in the end, but I don’t believe another manager would have performed any better with the cattle available.

Sure we can sack Arnie and keep rotating the manager like the Australian Prime Ministership, but that won’t change anything tbh.

We should probably stop talking about the money in terms of Arnie's performance. What he is being paid was probably only his market rate as there was interest for other coaching jobs. You probably don't want your National team coach taking a pay cut to do the job.

@Burtzur

What salary are you suggesting for another ‘average-level’ manager then?

Hoping that someone might do it for free for the exposure?

What salary would be required to attract a ‘top-level’ manager to take on the Australia job for the next 4 years?

It would be a lot less if we didnt require the manager to 'live in Australia' since more then half the squad is overseas i never understood why this was important but what do you do?

You easily get someone from Eastern Europe to do it for less then what Aronald is on now and do a much better job

ffa really bending over to make sure graham gets the most satisfaction possible. Crazy really considering his qualifications.
Trouble is football admin has been such a rabble for so long, seriously when did we have a technical director,  any decent coach with international and big league experience will think twice about coaching, especially if we insist they relicate here

Arnie is actually the best Australian coach for the job. I can't think of any other local coach (other than Ange) qualified for the job. Arnie was the best domestic coach at the time from CCM and SFC success. If we had to pick an Aussie, he is the only real choice.

I'm not expecting the NT coach to work for free but simply highlighting the fact that those who are saying "Arnie did as well as any other manager" to accept that if that's the case, we are spending a lot of money for nothing extra. The reality is the manager does have a lot of influence on the team and Arnie must shoulder some responsibility.

To be honest, $1.4m isn't too much in the grand scheme of things but the FFA could consider looking for a 'top level' manager but that would cost a lot more than $1.4m if you look at the above table.

I pretty much agree with everything you’ve said.

Which is why I don’t believe sacking Arnie will achieve anything.

FFA aren’t going to come up with the cash for a top-level manager for the next 4 years, so the alternative is another Aussie coach even less-proven than Arnie/Ange, or some B-grade Euro hack who could be a lot worse than Arnie, picking 34 year olds to fill our team with like the Holger days.

Fair enough. I just don't know what we can do. We're limping along and seeing other countries develop their football programs and I don't want to be in a position 3-4 years from now saying the exact same thing. If Arnie is the best we have, then we (and I really mean the FFA), should be doing more in other areas to maximise success.

1. Why are we insisting that it must be an australian who is our coach? Until aussie coaches are proving themselves why pride ourselves on taking second best?
2. Why are we taking A league performance seriously,  when our clubs have been performing so poorly in asia of late.
3. Paying arnie the same as a mid level coach wont make him one. Outside of the A league he is consistently poor. Big fish in a small pond.
4. until the ffa can get its house in order. Like have a technical director, greater transparency, a clear road map for expansion and second div, greater government support, real youth development options and review then we eill continue to tread water and be unattractive for any international coach

This is the real issue - in the "the future" thread 5 years ago, the same problems were flagged and nothing has changed. Football is being developed in a half cocked manner and we are expecting world class results. It doesn't add up.

well thats the real problem isnt it for all the GA out he is only a small part of the problem.

We are not producing players! simply put non of the players who played in that Asian cup squad would of made the starting 11 in the 2006 squad and the question is WHY? how has the standard dropped so much?

I am the biggest critic of the standard of the HAL but for all intensive purposes it is and has been better then the NSL for at least the last 4 years - is it simply there is too few teams and not enough talent getting a chance to play? and develop?

It cant be 'money' because there is more money in Aussie football then there has EVER been?

it has to be an issue with grass roots?? perhaps the lack of pathways?

Honestly i dont know what is wrong with Aus football but GA isnt the right man to be leading the national team as much as Gallop isnt the right man to be leading the FFA.

I feel like in 4 years from now post world cup we will be in the same situation we are in now wondering why!?
