Aus win - totally set up by Finch and Khawaja, Maxwell had a very good game. Zampa had an indifferent game. He won Aus the match with the wickets of Kohli, Jadhav and Dhoni, but went for 70 runs. Cummins and Jhye bowled well.

Finch looked amazing and Khawaja was totally relaxed vs the spinners.

In between it all:

41st ODI century for Kohli.. He's going to fly past Tendulkar's ODI records with ease at this rate.

His numbers as captain are mind boggling.

is captain 2013-2019

66 matches 63 innings

14 not outs 4096 runs

HS 160* Average 83.59

Balls faced4119 Strike Rate99.44

19 centuries 14 50's 2 Ducks...

Not bad numbers eh... It's the strike rate that is really impressive coupled with the batting average... Every second innings he's getting 50, 3 times out of 10 getting a century...

Best batting accumulator in ODI history...

looking back our bowling team for odis has been pretty good about half the time of late.

Finch bowling half the overs with spinners has made a world of difference

You're 100% right imo. The issue has been Aussie's batting. But Smith doesn't help solve it - Warner most certainly does.

But - Maxy is definitely showing his value as an allrounder - he has little as a batsman - but as an allrounder - his whole team input shifts drastically.

Zampa leaked plenty - but he was the difference. Jhye and Patty looked a million bucks. As did Finch and Khawaja.

india make a host of changes

1 Rohit 2 Shikar 3 Rahul 4 Kohli 5 Pant + 6 Jadhav 7 Shankar 8 BK 9 Kuldeep 10 Chahal 11 Bumrah

Aus make changes too

1 Finch 2 Khawaja 3 SMarsh 4 Handscomb 5 Maxwell 6 Turner 7 Carey 8 Patty 9 Jhye 10 Zampa 11 Behrendorff

India 103/0 off 18 overs.

Shikar is just smashing them now.

australia get a big score to chase down india well done

not sure who our best team is at the moment. Probably warner and smith in for finch and marsh and starc or lyon in for berendorf

maxwell was played as the 5th bowler but 8 of our wickets came from pace

most indian wickets came from pace as well

5 of the 10 highest succesful chases against australia

our reluctance to play spin and our difficulty in finding a pace bowler like starc that can dominate the short format

starc cummins and richardson are all tough to handle in this format as is zampa

An excellent run in the short form. Nearly 3 in a row after a 2-0 whitewash in india! Leaves some selection headaches!

It has me wondering what our best team is for the world cup and whether we should adjust our team against England. Only way to beat them is to get a bowling advantage or match them in striking

we talk in football formations like 4-4-2 and 4-3-3

reckon we can have some similar terminology for short form

# bruisers - # anchors -  # full time bowlers (not allrounders. Average under 30)

allrounders can be bruisers or anchors technically

Australia play a conservative 3-4-4 or 2-5-4
whereas England often play a hyperaggressive 7-1-3

We probably have a team to do 6-2-3 if we wanted to (Handscomb is a pretty aggressive anchor but not quite a bruiser)

Warner
Short
Smith/Khawaja
Lynn/turner
maxwell
Handscomb
Stoinis
Faulkner
Cummins
Starc
Zampa

would like to see us try a 4-3-4 or a 3-3-5 against England. Cummins/Starc/Richardson/Zampa can probably take a lot of wickets against England. Lyon is an option too if we go the latter formation

4-3-4

Warner
Khawaja
Smith
Marsh
Handscomb (wk)
Maxwell
Cummins
Starc
Richardson
Lyon
zampa

or 3-3-5

Warner
Khawaja
Smith
Marsh
Handscomb
Maxwell
Cummins
Starc
Richardson
Lyon
Zampa

Great win by Australia. Khawaja is in just the most amazing form and is piling on the runs against the best odi attack in world cricket.

Handscombe played a gem - finally - and owned the spinners with footwork.

Turner's innings - I have recorded and will watch later.

I read people talking about dropping SMarsh, Stoinis and not going on with Khawaja.  Yet they include Steve Smith as a certainty. Why?

Grazor - your captain is Finch - he won't be doing it as 12th man :P

And Handscomb has been a total liability before this is innings. I don't know how Australia will work their selection out. But SMarsh has a stack more runs than Smith does of late. So does Khawaja. Before this match - Smith in for Handscombe seemed an easy decision. Even then - this was Turner magic that got Aussie over the line.

I have been calling for Turner to get a shot in our limited overs sides for a while now. He is clearly suited to this format.. plus he has the extra string.. is a competent off spinner. In fact so good did CA regard Turner as a slow bowling all rounder that back in 2012 they replaced an injured Ashton Agar with him for the U19 WC. I have always rated Handscomb in this format too.

A couple of my smokies for the WC are Josh Philippe and Jack Edwards. Watch this space.

Stoinis injury opens the door for another all rounder for the Cup.. He has not exactly been smashing down the house. Plays one good innings in 5 and bowls far too short for his pace. I do like his passion tho. Still I prefer either Mitchell Marsh or my old fave James Faulkner to play the all rounder/finisher role for the Cup.

amazingly Stoinis is averaging is 40+ striking at around 100

Faulkner's bowling is good enough to be the 3rd paceman imo and that would let us bat very deep

Him and Shaun Marsh have been excellent for Australia in the past 2 years. As was Warner. Finch has been steady. And Khawaja is in a purple patch this series.

SSmith has not been. Handscombe before that innings not good neither. Nor Head. Maxwell okayish if treated as an allrounder.

Aus played an extra batsman and a bowler short last night, and chased it. Food for thought.

After this series, and not going for smokeys that havent played in the series youd be going for

Warner
Finch (C)
Khawaja
Smith
Handscomb (wk)
Maxwell
Stoinis
Cummins
Starc
10
11

10 and 11 coming from Zampa, Lyon, Jhye Richardson and Coulter-Nile.

Thats the squad up to 13 and add in Shaun Marsh and Alex Carey and thats probably the 15. Turner becomes the unlucky one.

Alternatively the unlikely option is:

Warner
Khawaja
Handscomb (wk)
Smith
Maxwell (C)
Turner
Stoinis
Cummins
Starc
10
11

Finch on form doesnt get a pick. Captain goes to Maxwell. Backups the same.

Yes grazor Starc is a must in this format. His record tells us that. I also like Jhye and Kane Richardson and Andrew Tye. Cummins is a lock. Not a bad ODI attack with Zampa as the spinner.
