- butn According to ABC News ‘people’ are concerned that the Socceroos game against Argentina in China will be used as propaganda by the CCP.

I don’t recall such concern over the AFL ‘cosying up’ to the Chinese Ambassador in their latest attempt at getting their game into China.

if the ABC is saying it then it is 100 percent bullshit - bunch of left wing racist pretending to be journalist

Apart from our share of the gate did the FFA get any financial incentive from the Chinese government to make the Socceroos available as suitable opponents for Argentina?Great if they did and as the mainstream Australian media as usual hardly mentioned the game so who cares if it was some propaganda exercise.

It wasn't as if our team had to kowtow to Xi Li.Prior to WW2 England played Germany in Berlin and the English FA instructed their players to give the Hitler salute prior to the game( their had been a request from some Nazi bigwig for this to happen).

Don't know about propaganda however Adidas must have made a shitload in jersey sales in China based on last nights game.. Dont think Argenitna has EVER played in front of a 99.9% crowd all wearing Argenitina gear before.

AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan has confirmed a report Sydney will host a China-themed game against West Coast in round 15 at the SCG.

China’s ambassador to Australia, Xiao Qian, is among several high-ranking government officials expected at a sold out pre-game function at the SCG, as well as AFL CEO-elect Andrew Dillon.

There will be a dragon dance performance on the SCG surface before the match, with Qian to toss the coin.

On the eve of the match, the AFL is also set to release the book Celestial Footy: the Story of Chinese Heritage Aussie Rules by Patrick Skene.

Record TV ratings in China for Tigers' Grand Final triumph

THE AFL's push into China is gaining momentum on the back of record viewership numbers for this year's Grand Final.

A total of 5.67 million people in China watched Richmond hammer Greater Western Sydney by 89 points at the MCG on September 28.

That represents a sizeable increase of 15 per cent from the previous year's encounter between West Coast and Collingwood.

The Shanghai Media Group (average of 2.852 million, up from 2.415m in 2018) and Guangzhou TV (2.589m, up from 2.503m) broadcast the Grand Final on free-to-air television in China, while Tencent and BestTV showed the game on streaming platforms.

There was also strong interest in the lead-up to the decider, with up to 1.36 million people tuning in to each week of the finals.

The centrepiece of the AFL's China strategy is the annual game featuring Port Adelaide, which this year was watched by 4.01 million people in China.

The game was shown on two free-to-air television networks in China.

The Power hosted St Kilda at Jiangwan Stadium in Shanghai for the first time this year after having Gold Coast as their opponents in 2017-18.

The Saints will return next year, with their clash with the Power locked in for round 11 of the 2020 season.

The state’s gambling watchdog has been referred to IBAC amid claims of corruption in its handling of three major footy scandals.

Two whistleblowers claim the Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation did not properly investigate the Jaidyn Stephenson gambling issue, Melbourne tanking saga or Talia brothers cheating allegations.

They allege the investigations were whitewashes and the body is beholden to the AFL.

The claims have been referred to the independent Broad-based Anti-Corruption Commission (IBAC).

“Pretending the VCGLR is a watchdog is worse than having no watchdog at all. Because right now, Victorians think someone is watching. But AFL fans need to know, nobody is watching, and that the AFL is making money from the madness and the badness,” one whistleblower said.

“Half the staff at the VCGLR are desperate for IBAC to step in and clean up the regulator. “There are good people inside the VCGLR who want to be allowed to fight corruption.”
