12 player each warm-up fixture. Teams are

Hick XII: Joe Burns, Cameron Bancroft, Steve Smith, Peter Handscomb, Matthew Wade, Mitchell Marsh, Tim Paine (c, wk), Michael Neser, James Pattinson, Jackson Bird, Chris Tremain, Nathan Lyon

Haddin XII:
David Warner, Marcus Harris, Kurtis Patterson, Travis Head (c), Marnus Labuschagne, Will Pucovski, Alex Carey (wk), Pat Cummins, Mitch Starc, Peter Siddle, Josh Hazlewood, Jon Holland.

Do think Glenn Maxwell was once again mismanaged here. Sure he had a poor world cup but hes averaged almost 50 each of the last two seasons in FC cricket and one of the rare players to be averaging 40 in FC cricket. Awkwardly him playing so much one day cricket has really cruelled his chance of getting a good county run to make a case. Either way really intrigued to see how this game goes. Do feel theres only a few spots left.

I don't know how I feel about neser being the standout

pattinson bird and tremain are all better imo. But Nesers batting is a plus I suppose

wish there were 5 games to choose a side

I don't think the selectors will put much relevance to this game, because all the "precious" players failed badly. A possible Australia top 6 batting line-up except for Smith could only manage 59 runs in total (42 came from Labuschagne who will most probably not be selected thus 17 runs from the other 5) against the Australian 2nd XI bowling line-up, what will England do to them? For the batsmen Labuschagne was head and shoulders above the rest, followed by Burns and Bancroft, who showed how easy it is to play Starc and Hazlewood with the new ball on a pitch that is offering so much for the bowlers. If you were to pick the batting line up based on this game it would read

Burns, Bancroft, Labuschagne, Smith, Wade, M Marsh, Carey.

This won't happen, and the selectors will come up with all the excuses possible.
Warner Harris Head Khawaja will all be selected based on their history in Australian colours. and with their inclusion that makes 10 batsmen out of 15 tour places so 3 batsmen will miss out.

My batting line-up for the first test would be Warner, Harris, Burns, Smith, Khawaja, Labuschagne, Paine, Neser, Pattinson, Cummins ( that would probably be the best batting line-up Australia can produce IMO) and quality work horse bowlers that have the ability to take wickets regardless of the state of the ball.
Carey will miss out as Wade will be back-up keeper to Australian captain Paine

For the bowlers looking at all the matches leading up to this point including recent tests over the last year against SA and India and including this game, they select themselves

Pattinson, bowling brilliantly at the moment sure only got one wicket but it was the important Labuschagne
Neser, who knew he had so much talent with the Duke, I didn't. Easily removing Warner, Harris, Starc and Cummins most probably all will play the first test
Jackson Bird following up his recent good form by getting current Australian players Head and Patterson along with the in form Carey and very easily
Siddle is a specialist England condition bowler and showed it
Cummins bounced back from a poor WC
Starc will be selected based on his WC form and excellent test record

That's 6 bowlers and if the selectors are truly using this game for form and are genuine about selections they should be selected. To include anyone else is bias, because Australia will only select 5 at max someone will miss out, most probably Bird or Siddle because they will probably select Neser as 2nd all-rounder with M Marsh.

Holland will be selected as back-up to Lyon

What we do know so far is who should be packing their bags for the flight home. Patterson, Handscomb  Pucovski, Hazlewood Tremain a couple of "pets" in there so a couple of quality players who have done everything right so far will miss out. So how much importance will the selectors show in this game? None! they will continue selecting their pets on massive CA contracts,  who have shown they truly are low men on the totem pole of ability.

The results so far in this game are not what the selectors wanted!

I'm not sure who has seen Pattinson bowl recently?

In the Shield last year he had dropped a lot of pace.

Neser bowled well at Bellerive last summer season. So did Mitch Marsh.

The pitch for this game must be a minefield!

One team out for 105, the other team had an innings of 120, and the cream of the Test batting line up are almost  out for barely anything in the second dig.

Cummins took 5 -24. I never thought he was out of form in the WC.

Warner has easily been the  top scorer with 54.

Great innings by Bancroft has cemented his place for the first Ashes test IMO. M Marsh has probably done enough for the selectors to put him back in the side as well, it helps when Langer is a big fan. The Australian bowling line up of Starc, Hazlewood, Cummins once again failed to take the necessary 20 wickets to win the game which matters in such a low scoring affair. At least Siddle took 5 wickets, it would have been very embarrassing otherwise. The selectors won't want to make too many changes because of the amount of money CA pay them so apart from Pattinson coming in for Hazlewood, I can't see too many alterations.

Anyone know what has happened to S Marsh? If he's fit the selectors seem to always want him in the side.

So following these recent warm up games my side would be for the first test
Bancroft (Batting av 31)
Warner (Batting av 48)
Burns (Batting av 40)
Smith (Batting av 61)
Khawaja (Batting av 42)
M Marsh/Laubuchagne ( batting av 26)
Tim Paine (Batting av 35)
James Pattinson (Batting 28 Bowling 26)
Pat Cummins (Batting 20 bowling 22)
M Starc (Batting 22 bowling 28)
N Lyon (Batting 12 bowling 32)

Reserves Wade, Neser, Siddle, Travis Head, Holland (possibly Tremain or Bird as call up if anything goes wrong)

On paper this is a very strong line up and with England showing poor recent performances at test level losing to WI 2-1 and struggling against Ireland, this side should win, but then again the selectors may look at this and give a few of the CA "contract pets" an undeserving opportunity and brings England back into the game.

Yeah my heart sank when mitch mopped up the tail

No doubt he will get selected

Ironically he is brilliant at odis and couldn't make the world cup ahead of stoinis!

Would love to see Cummins Patterson and siddle but Cummins Patterson and starc would still be excellent

Starc is showing real signs of fatigue for mine and needs a match off

match figures excluding lower order wickets

Neser 2/42
pattinson 4/37
bird 3/62
tremain 3/42
marsh 2/47
starc 1/79
hazelwood 2/56
siddle 4/45
cummins 4/38

starc with an off game and needs a game off after carrying the world cup team

Cummins and Pattinson are 2 of the best we've had in a generation, no surprise they stand out. Siddle, cummins and pattinson would be formidable. Weakest bowler dropped for starc next game

Looking at all the Australia A tour matches and excluding the lower order there is a strong case for the inclusion of Siddle

Cummins 4/38 (1 match) av 9.5
Siddle 4/45 (1 match) av 11.25
Pattinson 8/114 (2 matches) av 14.25
Neser 8/183 (3 matches) av 22.87
Bird 10/240 (3 matches) av 24.00
M Marsh 4/100 (2 matches) av 25.00
Tremain 5/143 (2 matches) av 28.6
Hazlewood 2/109 (2 matches) av 54.5
Starc 1/79 (1 match) av 79

This what our bowlers are doing currently not what they MAY DO in the future.

So I would agree with you that Cummins, Siddle and Pattinson would be very formidable, with Neser as back up ahead of the others. It really does show when just looking at these "FC games" that the combination of Starc and Hazlewood only ranks our No 8 and No 9 bowlers together surely we can do better. Starc may be tired after his World Cup so maybe they should have rested him for this trial match but he did only bowl 20 overs surely that's not overworked?

he looked overworked the last 2 world cup matches where his performance dropped and I heard he was carrying a niggle

if he bowls at his best in the last 2 matches its probably a different world cup!

Totally agree, when Starc is on fire his in-swinging yorker is the most dangerous delivery on the planet. Unfortunately it's not always there. Though Baggers constantly says he gets his wickets against the tail (though it is only about 38% of No's 7 8 9 10 11) to me that is a good thing that he mops up the tail quickly, other bowlers get the same opportunity and can't deliver like he does. That's why he would get my nod for the first test depending on his "niggles", at the expense of the unfortunate Siddle.

But Starc has an excellent record at test level especially in recent times and I still can't believe the pressure is so constantly on him from a lot of experts. In his last 16 tests he has taken 5 or more wickets for the test 7 times. That is good. Compared to Hazlewood who receives no pressure from the media who in his last 16 tests has only taken 5 or more wickets 2 times.

yeah people criticize starc a lot because occasionally he has a very bad couple of games in a row. The problem is he's a different bowler when he has a niggle and he often struggles with playing too many games. So I think he needs to be rotated

Hazelwoods form has been bad for a while. Not sure why it has dropped so much. I remember him being an out and out swing bowler early in his career with deadly accuracy. He seemed to get a touch quicker and lose a bit of lateral movement

maybe I'm wrong though?
