He's been banging them in for the Vuck in preseason, not sure what's going on there. Probably just wasn't in season long enough by the time the squad was selected.

Unfortunately Burundi's World Cup campaign is already over having lost their first round qualifier on penalties to Tanzania today, without ever losing a 90 minute game. The African qualifiers are brutal.

Absolutely fantastic to see however.

Gan and Davies starting for Malaysia vs UAE and they lead within 60 seconds! Massive. That African born player scored again.

Karl Dodd’s Guam side lost 4-1 to the Philippines.

Ramsey was an unused sub.

JVS and Valkanis haven’t started well with Greece.

They lost their first game to Finland and then drew at home to Liechtenstein.

Blew my mind when I saw them on the bench against Italy in a friendly recently.
I had forgotten all about it.

South Sudan have called up Tongyik, Kuol, Majok, Yuel, Athiu and Chok Dau as well as a bunch of NPL players.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they have to pull out bc of travel restrictions.

Interesting to see players from our lower leagues get called up for other nations. Maybe sides likes Lebanon and Thailand aren’t as good as we think they are.

How good do we think they are? personally i think they are rubbish.....most ppl i know think 90-95% of the AFC teams are rubbish

Please go to  Playing for Australia (even as a citizen by descent) without having grown up/lived in Australia. Yay or nay?

My way of looking at this is similar to yours. But I think this needs to be addressed properly by FIFA. Atm, it's basically mercenary-esque. This isn't just Australia.

Cricket is bad enough, in this respect. However they, at least, have residency requirements even for those who already have citizenship of the country by descent. E.g.  Kevin Pietersen (born a British citizen by descent and brought up entirely in South Africa) had to live in England for several years before he was eligible to play for England. I guess FIFA doesn't have such residency rules otherwise how would Souttar and Boyle be eligible to play for Australia (regardless of being Aussie passport-holders)? Cricket's bad enough with KP-esque mercenaries. Football's worse. Any bets Qatar and China try to import gun players from South America by hook or crook and get them into their NTs.

Until then, we just have to hope that our NT (and other NTs) don't end up with starting line-ups comprising entirely of footballers brought up entirely outside Australia.

Souttar and Boyle, fair enough, as long as they are the minority compared to Riley McGree, Aaron Mooy, Arzani, Deng, Mabil, etc.

If you don't meet residency requirements in football, you have to be a national (citizen or equivalent) of the country you want to represent. In addition, either you, a parent or a grandparent have to be born in a country you want to represent. In cricket, you don't need to be a citizen of the country you want to represent.

Sick of all the discussion on it. Get over it.

Interesting to see Alou Kuol get called up to the South Sudanese squad. Still think he could get a call-up to the Olyroos, and has a future in the AL.

Lmao nup those two sides they are rubbish, there is a handful of rubbish sides in Europe too but most of them are small countries with a small talent pool and/or limited $$.

But the 95% AFC is rubbish, even nations like China which has an expensive league, large population base and loads of $$$ is terrible. (but credit to China they are good at other sports)

I got respect for S.K and Japan they are miles ahead of the pack, a few of the gulf nations can be hit and miss and atm we are pretty poor but would stil be one of the 'stronger' nations in the confed which says it all.

I think India has potential to become a decent side but they are at least 10-20 years away.

If, as you say, 95% of the AFC is rubbish, then we in our current state are absolutely shithouse.

Sorry. I figured it is preferable to continue it here than in Aussies Abroad. And it does sorta relate to this thread insofar at it's the inversion of Aussies called up by other countries.

But perhaps I should have just started a new thread for it to be completely relevant.

Feel free to start a thread, it's a topic worth discussing.

this is why i steered clear from this forum for a while even ppl who have been following the sport for a long time are clueless about it.

We are 'average ' but anyone there day can lost in a 'one off game'

NZ in 2010 went to the world cup and didnt lose a game that doesnt mean they are a 'good' footballing nation.

i'd probably go even harsher and say 97% is rubbish if you throw us into that category

If you use A beats B and B beat C then C must be better then A logic in football you're an idiot. It is about long term consistently being at a good level. ie (having good structures) you expect Holland to always have a strong team even though they dont have a big league becuz of years of producing top talent. Japan and S.Korea are heading down that road no other team in Asia can say the same there are most nations in the AFC then another confed to have 2 nations that are good and everyone else rubbish means the confed is rubbish. Unlike otherconfeds there actually is a lot of money in the AFC so it must be structures of development from the member nations.

Quite the opposite im claiming he has been following the sport for a long time but still has some stupid arguments on it....like the post he replied too, was a dumb response

But i dont expect much from these forums anymore of the 'fans' are pretty clueless

Most fans get protective over the AFC even though it is mostly 'shit' they cant seem to call a spade a spade. I think this is one of the biggest issue in Australian football, people dont want to face the facts.

Joining the AFC has been terrible for Australian football, objectively speaking and anyone who disagrees is clueless, yes i accept the argument it is 'more' competitive but the issue is that competition has made exposure difficult at all level bar the senior side. Thus U/20 dont make world cups etc.

Football is all about exposure and 'hype' there are millions of players out there and 1000s of players undiscovered that could be world class making the exposure 10 times harder to get for a 'few extra' competitive Socceroos fixtures has been a disaster.

If you read any biography players will say they grew up playing with kids that were 'better' then them but either had the wrong mentality, got injuried or simply never got the luck break signing possibly due to timing and usually due to a lack of exposure.

If you think im wrong just look at NZ national team - they have a population of <5m, Football is less popular in NZ then it is in Australia they have less financial capabilities, they only have 1 professional team but but  they have more top players then we do atm and they are in the OFC a confederation where every team is hopeless but they get exposure going to WCs and Olympics with U20, U23 etc.

Thus once again calling a spade a spade, being part of the AFC is the biggest mistake the FFA has made. I dont blame them bcuz at the time it seemed like a good idea. But its been 15 years and we are still 'outsiders' in our own confederation with Qatar getting a world cup and a lack of real support for our bid in the 2022 WC shows it was a mistake to leave the OFC. If this FFA has any brains it would abandon the AFC and build a OFC league out of the A-L have a side from each member of the confederation. Turn the A-L into the OFC league it would make the league international it would help the region and at the same time make us the 'power' brokers for football in the region, opposed to being a outsiders no one likes in the AFC.
