Council decision today. Most likely no as the protestors  used their law degrees and bullying tactics . Council fear they could end up in ligation and end up in courts for years as the protestors have backing from rich benefactors

Do where to now?

have to find a new site. MVFC has to walk away now from Maribyrnong. if they don't wanna show us the love, they don't deserve us. the problem is that the club wants somewhere reasonably central. that won't be easy. Then of course we have the relationship with VU. VU are based in the western suburbs, so if we want to keep that relationship, we can't exactly look to other areas such as the south east. I've seen some people suggest Essendon, but I don't think there is a suitable site there... unless you look towards the airport.

Riiight, so all the profits are returned to members are they?

possibly the funniest thing you'll read on the internet all day is someone explaining to Eldar how a not-for-profit organisation divvies up all its profits.

So they still have the the two grounds at the Robert barrett reserve that are being constructed along with a new pavilion.

this is located just 1 km away from Footscray park.
this was for the woman victory team to be housed!

there is a aquatics centre and a well resourced night school with synthetic pitches to tap into.

so this might be a short term option!

I'm not sure where people think would be suitable in Essendon. It's pretty full with all of the parkland areas already occupied by footy/cricket clubs or are already designated parks that won't be given up. The only options in those areas would be to partner with one of the existing sporting clubs which brings it's own issues.

Also there has been some talk that Melbourne Victory will try and move into vacated land around the sunshine area.

Brack announced a new strategic plan for sunshine to become a mini CBD and a stadium was mentioned including sports Facilities as a driver!

it would be a great longer term plan to have Melbourne victory training base out there but I really did like the Footscray Park option with Flemington racecourse railway station across the river and a potential stadium built behind the Vic uni and the university support it was the best spot to lay roots... unbelievable people didn’t want an iconic club based in there suburb on what really is disused land!!
shocked!!!

I also would suggest Hansen Reserve in West Footscray.  Lots of room there, 2 soccer fields, Cricket, Tennis, Swim centre close by, and plenty of room for dog walking regardless.

I've seen some people suggest Essendon, but I don't think there is a suitable site there... unless you look towards the airport.

which is what the Essendon (AFL) side did at Tullamarine. Other than Essendon and Hawthorn (which is moving to Dingley), most AFL clubs have a century or more of association with their training grounds (all former VFL grounds, except Melbourne at Casey). Getting a large training site inside the Melbourne Metro area was always going to be hard unless you were ripping down a derelict set of buildings or something. Hitting the western outskirts for a training facility is the most practical option....perhaps ironically somewhere like Tarneit for instance.

I was looking at the situation in England and some of the clubs have their training grounds out of the urban area.  Arsenal for example has their complex 27 km away from Emirates.  Maybe they could find a 10-15 Ha site in the land zoned as Green Wedge near Keilor North.

Statement from Melbourne Victory

Melbourne Victory has today been formally advised by Maribyrnong City Council that the 2019 Footscray Park Masterplan, which included plans for our not-for-profit Women’s and Youth Academy precinct, has been rejected.

The purported decision by Council is both disappointing and surprising, given:
  • we have been working with the Council (in partnership) for over 4 years on the project; and
  • that the Council has contractually committed to both the Melbourne Victory Academy entity and the State Government to deliver the earmarked Footscray Park site for the project.

Melbourne Victory is considering all of its options in light of Council's decision.

We do wish to take this opportunity however to thank the Victorian State Government for its continued support of our youth, women's and community programs, and assure the Melbourne Victory family that those existing programs will continue uninterrupted.

Looks as though Victory representatives are too wet behind the ears. Just submit a proposal to council claiming its for AFL and it will get approved.

The AFL wouldn't have put this proposal in. It was asking to get rejected.

The AFL wouldn't have put this proposal in. It was asking to get rejected.

As a follow up, the 2 AFL developments I know about are in Perth, Eagles and Fremantle, both completed recently.

Eagles home base is a redevelopment of Lathlain Park, which has been a footy oval fore ever. So, they built a footy facility on an older footy facility.  They are providing the town of Vic Park with 2 fully paid for staff members for community development for the life of the project (99 years).  The developments publicly accessible uses are  café, sports museum, cultural centre, spaces for community events, functions and education spaces.  It has 2 ovals, the second is publicly accessible, it can be booked by local clubs and the like. The development included landscaping and developing the surrounds of the area.  Eagles also have one of the biggest Aboriginal welfare programs and social outreach programs in the sate, which now gets housed in Vic Park, and will run partnerships with the local council.

Development of Fremantle football clubs headquarters occurred out of town.  It wasnt put on top of valuable green space in a built up area.  Apart from the clubs facilities, it includes one of the largest pool/aquatic playground centres in the state.  A 6 court indoor sports stadium, gym, cafe, sports medicine, public changerooms, footy grounds.  There was a shortage of decent local junior football pitches, so it even included a bunch of those.  They also reached an agreement where some facilities used by the football club remain publicly owned, and the club rents them.  This provides an income stream that underpins the costs of the precinct, and stops the not very wealthy Cockburn council being buried by costs of what is a huge facility.

Both these developments cost local government a mint, and both of them couldn't sign on the dotted line fast enough.  Vic Park got a somewhat derelict footy oval and the somewhat rundown surrounds redeveloped into a community centre, access to resources they didn't have, community facilities, paid for staff, and the council being the headquarters of possibly the biggest and richest sporting organisation in the country.  Cockburn got a huge aquatic centre and complete sports precinct, whose operational costs will be underpinned by a huge long term tenant whose presence makes the whole project viable.

The AFL approach is, make them an offer they cannot refuse.  Find out what local council wants, get it for them, tie it up into your proposal with a nice big ribbon.

Where is the value adding by MV?  They are using public green space, that was being used.  What is it that was supposed to make the local council say, we have to have that, despite the loss of green space?
I havent seen the proposal in detail, how much do other sports benefit?  How does the local council benefit?  When this gets debated, do non football people stand up and say, this is a really good proposal for the local area, or is it just football people supporting it?

And now MV is going to sue?  The stupidity is breathtaking.  They may have to approach other councils in the future, why wouldn't they get told to fuck off?
