just 3 years ago we were regularly getting 100-150k on SBS.

now we're getting 50-70k on ABC and everyone is nodding and clapping.

its bizarre

I wouldn't call it bizarre, it's just where we find ourselves currently.

At the end of SBS' involvement in broadcasting the A-League ratings varied between 40 and 100 with 50-60 being the norm.  For the next 2 years One/Ten didn't bother publishing their ratings figures most of the time although I believe there were annual figures published.  I think most are just pleased that the FTA ratings are not continuing to dive like the Fox ratings are.  The ABC average rating at the moment is 53k.

Ratings are always published by Oztam its just whether anyone of the reporting agencies like Mediaweek can be bothered to put them on twitter if they dont make the top 20. It is something Im able to address this year with better source material than Ive previously had access to.

There are still plenty of people bitching and moaning though, just as there were when we were getting 100-150k on SBS.

Victory v Nix on ABC and Melbourne United v Sydney Kings in the NBL at the same time, across the road from each other. the NBL match is sold out. I'm sure we'll do fine when it comes to TV ratings, but the crowd could be ugly for Victory standards.

as i said the other day, it clashes with test cricket, presidents cup golf and a sold out basketball game across the road. so ratings numbers will be very interesting. 60,000 will be a great effort. the BBL starts next week and this is the time of the year where football gets lost in the heavy traffic.

The only positive spin I can put on this is that it’s probably for the best that nobody watched last nights match.

It was a shocking game.
Shocker of a rating too.
Sth Melb Hellas playing an FFA Cup game would get triple those sorts of ratings.

I didn’t mind the game. Brisbane create a lot but are not clinical need to seriously move from Suncorp completely inappropriate venue and cheapens the spectacle.

I'm sorry, the owner's first season in charge has been an unmitigated disaster in terms of numbers. Luckily for them they have 2 seasons to turn it around before rights negotiations start

These numbers are getting very worrying indeed.

The fall off is extreme in terms of interest at matches and on tv, and because streaming numbers aren’t easily assessable, the overall trend seems to be at red alert status.

What can the FFA and the clubs do to turn it around? Once the momentum is lost it’s hard to bring back, which is what is being experienced currently.

The product is as good as it has ever been yet that’s not translating to successful engagement with audiences.

You are weighing off opinion with fact

Only 4 teams have won more than 1/3 of their games. And when I last checked the top 12 goal scorers, 9 of them had played in the A League before

This season is just the same recycled junk we are used to seeing

The owners arent in charge yet.
But FFA have dug them a huge hole to get out of.
Thx Lowy for sustainability and fishing mantra.

The other issue is having a psuedo salary cap ,where clubs like SFC can storm ahead and teams like CCM and BR dont have relegation to fear and therefore  dont worry about spending a lot.

Yes they are in charge of operations so effectively they are in charge. Their first year in charge has seen a big drop in metrics. They couldn't even agree to a radio marketing campaign.

I think some people have been conditioned into believing the standard is improving year on year.

For me it’s regressed big time since the year Adelaide won it, that’s going on 4 years soon.

Sydney have created a culture where players will take less to be part of it and that ends up as loyalty concessions, any club is allowed to do it. While the cap exists the whole game is recruitment and managing the cap, amazing that Sydney is still the only team to work that out.

Agree about teams not having relegation pressure makes them just fill the cap and go through the motions only to do it all again with new players and a new manager in a years time.

That is a strategy that is more effective at keeping a team than creating one. If you need new top line players, its hard to ask them for loyalty concessions.  Its also hard to ask existing players for loyalty concessions, if you then fork out big dollars on new players.

What you talk of about culture is actually 'winning'  Players will often take less to go to a team perceived to be a winning team. There is usually only 1 or 2 clubs in the league at any one time with a 'winning' culture, so what do the rest of them do?

No they’re not. The FFA team that ran the A League are still running the A-League and the current owners of the competition, the FFA, won’t allow any substantial changes to be made until that control is transferred.

For example, if the owners wanted to replace Greg O’Rourke, they can’t, he’s contracted to the FFA and they have no control over that. Same with all the other operational staff and all the sub-contractors and commercial contracts in place.

it’s almost unbelievable that two years after FIFA said the competition should be independent and a year after the new Board was elected, that the competition is in a kind of zombie operational state with no one willing or able to do anything of substance.

Me thinks the same arguments that has been around for years now is still unresolved ... i.e. funds to FFA ... and secondly FFA's ability to without Hal agreement to introduce P & R...

News and Fox don't necessarily help either as they appear like they are in rugby white anteing the codes... a recent article in the Roar on rugby leads with the Heading... Fox V Rugby.

Those looking for a quick fix will also be disappointed because when FFA finally hands over Hal to the clubs the starting point will be low and getting back people who have left is always difficult.
