I think they should, there are not actually that many young NZ players who would make A-league level. No Australian players would miss out (Devlin and Piscopo for example). May need to change those rules to prevent more western united's popping up. Australian talent is already starting to spread pretty thin.

Well they shouldn't

Every Australian imo should be counted as a visa player in NZ or vice versa - WP should have all Australian players and 5 visa spots. They have had an advantage for many years which they haven’t be able to exploit

eg Why was Kosta a visa player for MV and Roar but not for WP

Because NZ doesn’t have many young talent doesn’t justify it for me

We have graciously allowed a New Zealand in an Australian sporting competition again. So they should be grateful for any opportunity we provide them.

Just before Nomates spouts in with some bullshit about how we need the Nix, just remember - if top flight professional football in Australia dies, so does New Zealand's.

Kiwis, tread carefully.

or will you just stop caring?
and disappear

Or are you really interested in Aus football and it’s development?

I think if NZ was to become Australia’s seventh state I would be much more comfortable with Wellington fielding a side in an Aussie football comp. I’d say that whether they were first or last on the ladder.

Lol!!! you can taste the salt from the NixOut posters.

Couldn't be happier for our Kiwi brothers' success in the last two years. They've given another Aussie coach a springboard to make a name for himself, They are playing the most attractive football in the League, have the most exciting foreigner, and are nurturing two of our young Aussie prospects, whilst one of their young Kiwi's is ready to head into a top flight European league.

Whatever you think of the nix, they are doing more for the good of the League, than most other clubs.

Everyone posting otherwise is a bitter, living in the past.

Fantastic post and I couldn’t agree more.

There's a few differences:
The first is that having an Oceania team was a per-requisite upon Australia leaving Oceania.
The second is that the league is officially "Australia and New Zealand's Hyundai A-League." Not Australia's A-League or the region A-League.
The third is that the countries are culturally very similar and have a lot of the same brands and businesses.

I think if NZ was to become Australia’s seventh state I would be much more comfortable with Wellington fielding a side in an Aussie football comp. I’d say that whether they were first or last on the ladder.

Will never happen, there's officially still an open invitation for NZ to join but you guys are such a political and social mess I think we'd all like to avoid that.

Perhaps The Wellington experience is a pointer for the ALeague as a whole. Lots of loud people write them off and after a couple of years everything comes good again.

It's very funny that one of the main reasons people have wanted us out over the years is because another Aussie team would be better for Australian football development - yet we have average foreign coaches at multiple Aussie A-League clubs and recycled, old journeymen players still running around.

In comparison, the Nix have given a 2nd chance to Ernie and a chance for Talay/Rudan. They've also, this year, got a team full of players who have never been seen in the A-League before. Out of the First XI, only DeVere and maybe Sotirio are players you can say were 'recycled' from other A-League clubs.

The continued commitment of a section of the Australian footballing fraternity to deflect from the A-League's actual problems to focus on the Nix - a well run, stable, financially independent club - will always be baffling to me.

It's not that simple when you're talking about a league which is starved for sustainable clubs and is currently hemorrhaging money. To throw away investment is idiotic.

With Wellington's licence expiring at the end of this season it is going to be very interesting to see what happens if independence does not get finalised before then. If it does, then Wellington are here to stay and will have the same rights as any other club in the league. If it doesn't, Wellington will be in the position in which the FFA could legally deny them the renewal.

i've got news for you, the IHAL can't officially happen for another 3 years. the Nix can be kicked out and they should be. being 4th on the ladder halfway through a season doesn't mean they deserve to be around for another 20-30 years.

Kicking out a financially stable, well-run club when the league is on the brink would be a genius move.

And a club which is committed to the long term, people outside of Wellington just don't understand the investment that the Phoenix have put into player development. They're the only club that offers year round top tier club football and they have bespoke/purpose built facilities along side the first teams training facilities and are definitely one of the top if not the top academy in the A-League. They not only develop young NZ talent but also international talent, they've had a few Australian's in the academy in the past and even the current U17 captain for Mexico came through the Phoenix academy system.

A player like Singh, which the Phoenix have developed since he was barely a teenager, going to Beyern Munich is such a good news story for the league, he'll be followed by Cacace and probably players like Waine and Sutton, and that's just the tip of the iceberg. It's so successful that I wouldn't be surprised if more Australian's started making the trek over at a young age to join the Phoenix academy.

As was posted above, how many players in the Phoenix are recycled? A good chunk of the first team was developed by the Phoenix and quite a few players that are in other clubs also were given their professional debuts by the Nix.

Regardless of the arguments for and against, I think it's more WP fans believing it is their god-given right to be in the HAL that irritates people. You are guests, be a bit more grateful.
