you could put the current product on any media platform you like and it will still fail as it is stale, boring to watch and full of recycled pensioners and journeymen.

fix the product and income from media (and other  sources) fixes itself

You're talking to people that thought the game would sky rocket if we got on 7/9/10 because of all the "cross promotion" and because it's a mainstream channel

the more I think about it, the more convinced I am about the need to have a break in January. There is way too much competition. Hot weather. We have Asian tournaments where players are away. Make the last game first weekend in January. re-start in the first week of February. the only exception I'd make is keep the big blue on Australia day. that needs to be retained. start the season in September.

I think that the reality that the A League is now unsellable as a tv product is generally sinking in.

Whoever negotiated the current Fox deal performed the steal of the century, not sure how Fox ever let it through.
Who knows, someone might step up in the future.

I struggle to see any interest in the TV rights now. I really think that the only thing that can save the competition is a complete re brand and relaunch.

I have some experience in branding and it is is myself considered view that the A League brand is now devalued beyond repair. I have some ideas on how the League could be rebraned, based on experience, but all of them involve significant investment from the club owners.

Will they do it? On a business argument, definitely not.

Significant investment?  They've already "invested" hundreds of millions of dollars.
They're only saving grace is that there might still be some around who want to pay $20 million for a license.

HAL ratings are  bad and the much hyped NBL ratings are dire.
Yet both sports have a solid participation base.
Just how relevant are FTA figures these days  as a measure of fan interest and in particular younger demographics?

If a lot of advertising revenue is focused on more digital platforms  year by year,at what point do ratings lose their significance?

Is that the Australian rights for the J-League? i.e. are they picking up the feed of the existing Japanese broadcaster?

Is that the Australian rights for the J-League? i.e. are they picking up the feed of the existing Japanese broadcaster?

Optus scores goal in soccer push with Japanese Football League rights

Optus Sport has secured a three-year exclusive deal for the Japanese Professional Football League as the streaming service chalks up 800,000 subscribers and positions itself as the home of soccer.

The deal, which will fill the telecommunication provider's content schedule for the year, is the first for Optus Sport in the Asian market. Up to four matches per round will be broadcast live and on demand for viewers as part of the arrangement.

Optus' head of TV and content, Corin Dimopoulos, said the new rights deal solidified the company's position as home of the world's "best football".

“We’re excited to be announcing the acquisition of the J League rights as we commence our 2020 campaign and to really solidify our position as the home of the best football from around the world,” Mr Dimopoulos said.

The J League - which includes top club Yokohama F. Marinos coached by former Socceroos coach Ange Postecoglou - will add to Optus' existing football offering, which includes the English Premier League, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League and the FA Women's Super League. Mr Postecoglou's team were the 2019 champions and will defend the title once the competition starts in February.Optus snatched the local rights to EPL from Fox Sports in 2015 in a deal reportedly worth more than $50 million a year over three years. And in 2018 bought exclusive Australian rights to the English Premier League for the 2019 to 2022 seasons. The company declined to disclose the cost of the Japanese deal and whether it would look to buy rights for other leagues in Asia.Optus Sport now has 825,000 active subscribers, up from the 700,000 flagged in August last year. The number of games streamed has grown by 10 per cent year on year and there has been a 30 per cent increase in minutes watched, the company said. The latest rights deal comes as Optus and a number of commercial broadcasters prepare for Rugby Australia's official tender process to start. Those close to negotiations have said Optus is interested in the broadcasting rights as it looks to expand its live sport offering. But incumbent Foxtel, which has worked with Rugby Australia for two decades, could still reach a deal. Rugby Australia is being advised by highly regarded rights consultant Shane Mattiske. Optus declined to comment on its involvement.

I mean most likely yeah, but Fox Sports gotta have something on all year round and during summer so surely maybe they could offer a new deal but it would be drastically less then the previous ones.

But when you think realistically broadcasting three very similar sports during winter means splitting there own competition and therefore gaining less from promotions and advertising or theyre kinda just throwing more money around with less gain.

Fox are trying to turn a loss around, they arent aiming to remove all sport. They want to reduce costs. So there is definitely logic in keeping A-league and football but the current deal wouldn't be replicated anytime soon.
