+x+x+x+xFriday night's attendances can only be described as disastrous. We are heading rapidly towards an all time low season average. We have are talking about clubs shedding half of their support from 5 years ago. Stop the press, teams perfoming badly struggle to pull crowds. Shouldnt matter how good/badly your teams performing just show up, even if you decide on a game or two less per season due to form. The derby is the game to be at, call it plastic or a casual fan, the Derby is the minimum regular fixture each 'fan' so attempt to attend. This is the point.
This is the MELBOURNE derby - a big game involving the biggest club.
Some HAL fans only watch games on telly. Some are season ticket holders and go to every home game. Some travel interstate. But for those who go only 1 or 2 games a year - this is the game they go to. And the fact only 16k turned up says a lot of people have tuned out. Exactly. This attendance should be ringing huge alarm bells with the clubs and FFA.

+x+xWhat’s happened in Melbourne over the last couple of years is Victory is starting to lose its grip as a genuine mainstream presence in Melbourne, this can’t be solely put down to bad form as the team was a semi finalist last year, but publically the decline is very noticeable, I remember during the A league season you could be in any shopping centre in Melbourne and you would spot heaps of people wearing Victory gear, those days are largely dead now. Of course the decline of the competition in general is a key factor. Don't comment much these days But the lengths Victory took to ensure South Melb did not get the nod for an Aleague licence has caused a nosedive in the Greek Membership for Melb Victory which at its height during their glory days was at over 20% and would now be a single digit. Word circulated quickly in our community. Anthony Di Pietro in particular demonstrated unethical behaviour at lobbying for non inclusion of smfc not because of football but because the smfc board has a relative of his who is quite prominent however they are not talking to each other and are very bitter towards each other also The West Melbourne bid was a desperate inclusion due to Anthony Di Pietro Broadcast data was heavily weighted towards a smfc team in the Aleague and the FFA had several meetings with South The far south east bid was a frontrunner based on location however like the WMG, having a stadium to play in was baseless, and still is South was the logical option and would have created a real derby Not sure why everyone is complaining about the current attendance and TV audience. Clubs wanted more power and got it. Anthony DP made the first move by blocking south. It's up to the club's to promote their league now. Not the FFA Clubs got what they wanted and it is obvious have they no plans to promote their own comp As for South, I'm glad we saved millions as their is no ROI on the HAL. Bring on tier 2 national football with some real bloodline football clubs. I am certain football will be the winner. How sad if all that is true. It;s no wonder numbers are in decline now and I encourage all SMFC to not pay their memberships with Victory because of the blatant discrimination. I got a feeling SMFC is better off saving their millions and waiting for the second tier.

Great that Brisbane are going back to Dolphin next week and better is the stadium talk. The stand has little to no rain coverage as viewed on TV so it just looks empty. Get rid of Suncorp ASAP.

I know the stadium well. When it rains like that, everyone moves up under the covered areas and out of camera view. Also, with small crowds like 8-9k, the seats in the western stand always go first, so same side as the cameras. In a stadium that holds 52k and less 1/5 full, with everyone in the western stands, the cameras will always show an almost empty view. Then add in the few who the cameras can see going for cover in the rain, and you have what you saw last night. This is simply a description of the situation. I wasn't there last night, so I have no idea of whether the crowd figure is accurate or not, but it certainly conceivable that almost 9k were there despite the empty seats on our screens.

Probably the most inflated crowd figure I have ever seen at any AL/NRL/AFL match. I agree 3-4k absolute tops. 3,000 would be just THREE of those bays filled. It’s laughable if anyone thinks the crowd in there last night could fit into just three bays.

I should add that I've been at Suncorp with 15k and it still looks empty on tv. The stadium is a disaster for the Roar and, more broadly, for the A League,

That lower bowl holds 28k and even with an 18-22k Rugby crowd there it still looks poor. It’s only 30k+ where it looks good

The crowd at Suncorp looked right to me. The only surprise was that it got so many attending with the storms. Didn' think we'd get 9K but we did.
In a resort somewhere
