+x+xFox Sports dumping Rugby. Sign of things to come for the A League TV rights. Go woke. Go broke. Well, they are going broke because they sold out to News Corp, pretty much the opposite of whatever woke is.

NewsCorp's quarterly results out today.
370,000 kayo paying subscribers as of 5 Feb.... down from 402, 000 as of November last year.
Subscription video services revenue is down 11% year on year. (Currency + Foxtel numbers down)
370 K * $25.00 per month is 110 million per year , on this basic all sports are due for a major haircut...

When you have a look at the ratings its hard to believe that people with Kayo are simply watching the A League because they can. There are so many sports options for people with Kayo and if the Fox ratings are any indication then we'd be about 10%-15% of Kayo viewers Free-to-air AFLW on Seven Carlton v Richmond 211,000 Subscription TV AFLW Fox Footy Carlton v Richmond 64,000 SuperRugby Fox Sports Brumbies v Rebels 49,000 Highlanders v Sharks 27,000 Football Matilda’s Olympic Qualifiers Fox Sports Australia v Chinese Taipei 36,000 Football A-League on Fox Sports Melbourne City v Melbourne Victory 28,000 Perth v Wellington 17,000 Basketball on ESPN NBL: Bullets v Breakers 18,000 NBA: Lakers v Rockets 12,000 NBA: Bucks v 76ers 10,000 Cricket on Fox Cricket WT20 Tri-Series: India v England 11,000

Then you include the 15-30k per Fox sports showings and suddenly each game can draw at least 50k and possibly towards 80k. Yes these numbers are not amazing, but when you consider the addition of these figures from Kayo, it shows that there is some reasonably solid interest in the A league still, even with the factors working against us and the lack of and decreasing marketing and visibility over the past few years.

There is no doubt A-league viewers are scattered across different mediums. Without see real figures from Kayo and YouTube debate can easily be hijacked. I am sure the current broadcast situation is not ideal but it probably isn’t as bad as people think.

It would be interesting to see age demographics of Foxtel these days. My guess is that less younger people are subscribing each year and this is a major reason for the HAL figures. The crowd figures have dropped as well but do not reflect the massive drop off in tv viewers. The ABC is also an old age demographic station. But if you compare their ratings to Ten last year. Are they any worse? There must also be a significant number of people who chose Optus over Foxtel. Until we see Kayo figures ,who knows the truth?

Hope people don't mind, this is an extract from the AFR talking about how the AFL is seeking a two year extension on their present TV deal, presumably because they already know it will be a tough market when the time comes to renew. It's relevant to what we are facing a couple of years down the track> AFL works on extension with Seven, Foxtel, TelstraThe AFL is believed to be working on an extension to its broadcast rights deal with Seven West Media, Foxtel and Telstra. Sources told The Australian Financial Review the parties were looking at a two-year extension. Some said a new deal was close, while others tempered expectations of an imminent deal but acknowledged "there's smoke". While there is desire to get a deal done, sources said there is still some jockeying over what increase in price would come from an extension and who would be paying the inflation increase, given the rising value and importance of digital rights. An extension on the current rights deal would make sense for all three of the AFL's broadcast partners, who to varying degrees are dealing with their own challenges and transformations, and would lock in one of Australia's most popular sporting codes for a longer period in a time of audience fragmentation. For the AFL it would create a level of certainty for income through until 2024, when the media landscape could look far different than it does today. ......... In 2015 it signed a six-year, $2.508 billion deal with News Corp, Seven and Telstra which began in 2017, taking advantage of a situation in which the NRL and Nine, owner of The Australian Financial Review, had blindsided Foxtel with a new rugby league deal. ............ Under the current deal, News Corp, which owns 65 per cent of Foxtel, is paying $1.3 billion over the life of the agreement, Seven is paying $840 million and Telstra is paying $600 million. [Note Telstra is only paying $300m and 7 is paying $840 cash and $60m contra advertising ie its 1,308m+900m+300m= 2,508m News Corp is paying $1,168m cash + $140m contra advertising] Foxtel has all nine AFL matches per round live, Seven shows, on average, 3½ games per round, while Telstra owns the digital rights. An extension would likely roll a similar split of matches over. Work on the extension comes as Rugby Australia prepares to send out tender documents for its own rights deal from 2021 through to 2025. Rugby Australia is in the final throes of working out a deal to bring club rugby into its broadcast arrangement and will test the open market for the first time, having declined a reported $20 million a year offer from incumbent rights holder Foxtel. While some sources said a new deal was close, others tempered expectations of an imminent deal but acknowledged "there's smoke". www.afr.com

Just noticed this extremely disrespectful headline, I'm assuming it's the daily terror. As far as coverage of the A-League goes, it really doesn't get any worse than this: (sorry tried to add an image, but it failed to upload) Headline: Kiddies Corner Derby moved to ABC-ME as A-League interest dwindles

Yawn. This is has become the new go-to easy jab at the aleague from non-football media. They exhausted all the fan bashing content, now it’s the perceived lack of interest. It’s getting old already. Plus most, if not all, of our codes have seen some form of decline in recent seasons so it’s really not just an exclusively football related problem...

Very good rating for Fox, I would guess that would be higher than most AFLW games.

No sign of A- League match coverage on ABC today. They were televising women's golf on 3 different channels. This does not bode well for the future of football on free to air.

Was watching the Western United V Roar match on Kayo yesterday, but had to go out and pick up kids at halftime. The match was not broadcast AT ALL on any radio station in Melbourne. I know, I checked every station (about 50 that I can get in the Eastern suburbs) in the car.
How do we expect anyone to care about this league when it has zero promotion and marketing?
