Why is "Mexican" considered a derogatory term? Doesn't that suggest there is something wrong with Mexicans?

I totally get that the DT front page was in poor taste having a dig at this time but I'd rather be called a Mexican than a cockroach no?

It's very obviously copying the way many Americans see themselves as superior to Mexico. Like I said in my last post on the matter, I don't see the term itself as derogatory (even if that is usually the intent) but the cultural cringe of seeing oneself as America just makes me embarrassed for anyone who uses the term. It's so dumb.

Or genius. Their job is to get attention now and this is low hanging fruit.

Its a sad indictment when people choose to put stupid shit out there for heat. Clickbait journalism and outrage tweets makes a mockery of journalism is

Anyway, I think we'll be joining Victoria in lockdown within the fortnight.

I hope not. It sucks to feel like things are going backwards. I was just called up for a full week of work this week and had my hopes up, but that's all on the backburner now.

We've hit the record highest daily rise in cases globally with 228,102 recorded.

We are going to go far deeper into the woods before we start heading out of it.

I quietly hoping that these flare ups haven't had any major spread since people are at least socially distanced etc.

It's not derogatory from a NSW perspective at least.  At least in my experience the term has been in use for over 30 years and 'Mexican' has just meant south of the border to us and nothing else.  IE Vics are south of the border from us so they're Mexicans.

Really it's just a bit of banter but these days the professionally outraged will always find something to take issue with.

Reinterpreting that based on today's politics is ridiculous.

These aren't contradictory at all? The left article is talking about the general shut-down of society, whereas the right article talks about the specific decision to employ private-contractors to secure the hotels. Opening up society would have resulted in no second-wave (as it hasn't done in all the other states) if they had properly managed the hotels.

I voted for Dan last election, but he has fucked us hard. We've had the longest and most stringent lockdown, and we're about to have the worst economic impact of all the states.

Even if Dan is to blame for horny security guards (which is debatable at best in my view) what proportion of the current wave of cases have come from it? I'm having a hard time joining any other dots between decisions that he's made and the emergence of the second wave.

The genomic sequencing confirmed that we had eliminated the strain in March, and this uptick comes purely from the guards. Besides, where else could it have come from, given that our borders are shut? The hotels were literally the only point-of-entry for the virus and they fucked it.

They employed low-skilled, untrained Indian security guards with poor English to literally the most important job, because the only way the virus was ever going to get into the public was through the hotels. There's literally stories of the guards sharing cigarettes with guests, they weren't provided proper training and PPE, and then some of them even drove Uber after their shifts. Meanwhile, other states with hotels used disciplined ADF/Army members, and they've managed to contain their hotels just fine.

I don't think he's personally responsible for making the decision, but as a premier you must take responsibility for your governments fuck ups, else you can't take credit for its successes. Given how much this is going to cost us economically, heads should absolutely roll for this.

There are 6.35 million people in Victoria, I'm no expert but the chances of at least a few people in the community carrying the virus without symptoms or ignoring a sniffle and starting some of the dozens of clusters other than the hotel ones are pretty likely, I'd say.

People will obviously emphasise the incidents that suit their agendas, be that the BLM protests, the hotel issue, Ruby Princess, etc.

Vietnam did very well, 350 cases, 0 deaths, and the highest rate of tests done per positive case in the world. Early action and public buy-in were key, it seems.

Considering it's been about 2 weeks since LFC clinched the title and fans congregated on Anfield by their thousands, would be interesting to see if there's been a spike on cases on Merseyside to correlate with this...

There are only two intellectually honest debate tactics: (a) pointing out errors or omissions in your opponent’s facts, or (b) pointing out errors or omissions in your opponent’s logic. All other debate tactics are intellectually dishonest - John T. Reed
