How good would it be to have a broadcast partner that is trumpeting you to the public at every opportunity, like 7 does for the AFL?

backwithabang.png

whats goin on with NRL ratings?  looks like they're getting pantsed.
AFL got more FTA viewers in melbourne alone, than the NRL got nationally??

and Fox
AFL  235K
NRL  220K

Audience ratings for A-League matches have been in steady decline falling by around 25% in each of the past two seasons and a further 26% after 23 rounds of the 2019/20 season. The domestic football code reached a low point of just 8,000 viewers for the Round 16 clash between the Wellington Phoenix and Newcastle Jets

This is a bit of a puff piece on 7 and Fox ratings, but there is a mention about Kayo in here, so might have broader interrest.

Foxtel said on Monday its ratings were up 21 per cent year-on-year across the group's linear and video on demand platforms, including Kayo, the streaming service which has been a key driver of the growth.

Two things - Kayo is driving the growth (no real surprise there - a cheaper product picks up new viewers) and secondly, with empty stadiums you’d expect viewing to grow: how else are people going to see their teams?

Double edged sword for Fox because it means less revenue (unless they can retain their premium subscribers and grow Kayo on top of that).

Georgina appeared on that ABC sports chat show this morning, as usual, they may have spent 30 seconds on football.
She's a rugby person and regularly goes into bat for Super Rugby and the Wallabies etc.
She made the point that on Friday night, the AFL and NRL games got an aggregate TV audience of around 2 million, while the re-vamped Australian rugby comp got something like 69k on Fox.
Now 69k isn't bad for rugby  (or the A-League for that matter), but she wanted to send a clear message that rugby must get on FTA this next broadcast round.
As football fans, do we think that FTA is important, or are we happy to see it all disappear behind a paywall (whoever it belongs to)?

More ratings news.  I think it's as bit of an exaggeration, but anyway, might be of interest.
This is from the Daily Terror:
https://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/sport/nrl/broncos-suffer-huge-hit-in-tv-ratings-as-afl-surges-in-brisbane/news-story/5e09accbbd2d5c99dd8cd9e2944f58ef

Broncos suffer huge hit in TV ratings as AFL surges in Brisbane

Explosive figures suggest fans are switching off the embattled Broncos en masse, with AFL television ratings at record highs in Brisbane.Even when they won three AFL premierships in a row earlier this century, the Brisbane Lions could not keep pace with the Broncos in the race for television eyeballs.

But in a stunning win for the AFL in Queensland’s rugby league heartland, free-to-air ratings have spiked by 38 per cent in Brisbane alone, and it would appear the boost has as much to do with the Broncos being at rock bottom in the NRL as it does the Lions flying in equal first on the ladder.

The Daily Telegraph can reveal that the AFL has outperformed the NRL by a whopping 38 per cent in national audience on Thursday nights and 28 per cent on Friday nights.

Given the Broncos have featured in four Thursday night clashes and two Friday night prime time matches from their eight matches this year – it’s another brutal assessment of how the Broncos are on the nose.

The NRL has outperformed AFL on Fox Sports this year, but on free-to-air television, the AFL on Channel 7 are kings.

AFL bosses are excited about its massive boost in popularity in NSW and Queensland at a time when more than half the competition has relocated there due to the COVID-19 crisis in Victoria.

Across both expansion markets in NSW and Queensland, the AFL is up 16 per cent in 2020 on its averages.

GWS Giants’ first ever home Friday night match last week against Collingwood banked a national audience of 1.02 million, the AFL’s sixth biggest TV audience of the year.

AFL chief executive Gill McLachlan on Monday night claimed a huge victory for the game in rugby league heartland.

Queensland crowds tend to be notoriously fickle, and AFL in the past, when the Lions were strong, and the Bronco's weak, have outperformed NRL in Brisbane.  So it's not that surprising.

One of the reasons the NRL have preferred 1 strong club in Brisbane perhaps.

It's the problem with one-team-towns in a closed league. At some point they're going to be shit and the casual sports fans and news will swing to other teams. ie: In Sydney this year there's less focus on Souths and more on Parramatta. In Brisbane's case the other teams are playing other codes.
C9 has been wanting a second Brisbane NRL team for a ~decade because they know their ratings in Brisbane will drop when the Broncos go through a bad season.

If the A-League relied on huge tv deals like the NRL/AFL it'd put a spanner in the works for P&R but as it is I think it's one thing that could work in P&R's favour: we have less to lose and possibly more to gain.

This is very interesting.
Just noticed a tweet from sports industry which might give an indication of  a Kayo audience.
It's relating to an AFL game, but no reason why this wouldn't work like this across the board.
It says the Carlton vs Western Bulldogs game got the highest rating for the round on STV of 325k (quoting some article), which included Kayo.
BUT
The actual Fox rating was publicly released as 218k, meaning we might be able to surmise that Kayo was 107k (or one third of the the total ratings).
This means each time we see a Fox rating for a game, can probably pump it up by 50% to get a truer indication of the actual eyes watching.

No, I wouldn't think so.
If your starting point is that the spread of viewers across one does not vary significantly from the spread of viewers across another, it's possible to make proportionate estimates.

poorly, most likely. But have seen some Kayo numbers floating about for other sports, will be interesting to see those for the A-League.

If we can get up to around 40k that's ok.
If we can push towards 50k, that would be fantastic.
It will be tough because we have been out of sight for so long now.

Following on from estimates of how much we might get, just noticed that for Thurs. night, NRL got 242k and the AFL got 240k (does NOT include Kayo).

It begs the question whether there is anyone leftover to watch football.

But I can flip that.  They are very good ratings at a time when Foxtel's popularity is declining, so there are still people watching sport on Foxtel, we just have to pick up our share tonight (and then add 50% for Kayo).

It's very important that we maintain decent ratings for our next deal (to encourage bidders for the product).

We can't afford to wallow in sub 20k territory like the NBL.

The smaller rugby comp got over 60k the other night, and current speculation is that their deal will drop to around $10 mill per annum from next year.

the conspiracy theorists will question why the AFL are compacting their games so teams play "11 games in 9 weeks" at exactly the same time the AL restarts. There doesn't seem to be a lot of logic in the AFL's decision. Injuried players are already at very high numbers.

Not the best come back you could have envisaged.
Even if we add 50% for Kayo, it's still not great.

Well it won't work for the a-league. It got relegated behind afl, nrl and super rugby by foxsports. And will continue to do so.

In AUSTRALIA winter football is a death sentence.

Its because having over half the comp in a hub costs a fortune so they want it over with quickly.

12K is beyond a worry...

The lack of promotion by anyone and the negativity hanging around like a dense fog over everything...

How, Who and by what means I don't know but we need some confidence back... and before anyone says P & R will fix and or a second division... I doubt it if the A-League falls over, there is money, or willing broadcasters to have a professional league in Australia at any real size.

However I think we are so far down certain beliefs that I can't see us uniting and I fear for our future...
